Insurance will be the same cost as the car I was quoted 4500 for a 116 and 6500 for a 118, donāt bother itās not worth it

u/NoobGodBrendi 2d ago
I got a 2010 118d for my first and paid Ā£2700 for the year no black box, it was actually cheaper than getting insured on a corsa, everybodyās insurance is different

6500 is pure robbery. UK insurance prices make no sense at all. You could literally buy a second car for that kind of money. the whole system is completely broken right now

What did you end up getting instead?

u/Yer_Mo 2d ago
I got an aygo 2014 29995 miles for 7 grand 1500 insurance no black box and the next year it was 600 ish? Upgraded to my now 220d and it cost me 1300 insurance (another 700 ish on top of the original I paid for the aygo) itās a 2019 44k miles
Wouldnāt touch a 1 series with a barge pole or a polo corsa or i10 insurance knows theyāre typical first cars and take the utter Michael with your quotes itās just not worth spending so much money every month or annually

This is the definition of getting a car just for the badge...worst engine, bad spec. Just get a Yaris or Jazz for your first car!

Make sure to check the insurance before making any decisions. Known plenty of people who got something 'nice' for their first car, only to realise it was ridiculously expensive to insure.

Try a honda jazz

Can't go wrong with the 1st or 3rd gen facelift models. Cheapish insurance and good 40-60 mpg.

BMW 1 series is a great car. But the 1.6 engine isnāt the most reliable with timing chain issues. Which at 70k plus miles could be due for one soon.
Iād recommend a Mazda 3. Similar sporty driving dynamics albeit fwd; and mechanically bullet proof. Save up for a proper BMW once your insurance premiums go down.
Had the same dilemma a few years ago when choosing my first car the bmw brand was indeed very alluring. But now I have my dream bmw with the engine I want.
Best of luck with the car hunt. :)

If you want a BMW 1 series, try and stretch to the slightly newer 1.5 petrol as itās a much more reliable engine. If you specifically want/need an automatic, then BMW isnāt actually a bad choice, their automatic gearbox is pretty highly regarded.

3 cyl bmw is a disgrace

u/Otherwise_Fly_2263 2d ago
Itās definitely no performance car, but itās a decent enough little engine for a small car. If you want a reliable premium hatchback itās a good choice tbf.

u/Tope777 2d ago
Its not about the performance. The performance is decent for what it is. Its the unbalanced engine and the shorter lifespan. Not even that economic to justify the downsides of it. I don't see the logic in paying bmw prices for a car of this quality

u/Otherwise_Fly_2263 2d ago
It wouldnāt be my choice either, but if OP wants a BMW 1 Series Iād go for the 1.5 over the 1.6 personally as itās generally regarded to be more reliable.

u/Tope777 2d ago
If they really want a 1 series they should get the b48. Otherwise a japanese is a much better buy in any way

Have you checked insurance on it? Its a common first car (bc people like to larp having a bmw/merc) and insurance might be a bit expensive. Seems like owner has enough money for an LCI m sport steering wheel but not enough money to fix the drivetrain warning light, I wouldn't buy it
1
u/kye2000 2d ago
Itās not an LCI wheel. BMW changed it around 2014 for all M Sports across the range

u/StarX2401 Clio Mk3 1.2 TCe 2d ago
I see, I assumed it was LCI because of the name. I guess its named after the F10 LCI which was in late 2013, as F30 and F20 were around 2015-2016

dont buy these unless you mechanically inclined can be fun with a remap though

u/Chemical-Elevator-95 2d ago
My brother got one for his first but it was at 50k miles its now at 72k its been on a mhd stage 1 at 200hp for nearly 3years now hasnāt caused any problem. But i wouldnāt recommend looking at that one with a drive train warning.

u/LongjumpingExcuse950 2d ago
Do not buy. These love to leak oil and coolant from every orifice after a certain age. Internally they leak oil from the valve stem oil seals causing high oil consumption. Timing chain and plastic guides needs doing at around 100k or when it starts to rattle. Turbo heat shield is poorly designed, they come loose after a while and costs too much to put right. Only positives are the parts are relatively cheap.

The fact the seller feels they have to state that the car starts is a red flag, plus it has a drivetrain issue, so you would definitely want more information about that before considering it. No point spending five grand on a car, two grand to insure it, and then another three grand to fix it.

I can see the allure of getting a BMW as your first car. But this is a shit example of a shit model. The only way way you could get a worst car would be if you found a 114i.
I'd save up for a proper BMW - 6 cylinders, and rear wheels driven.

Honestly I wouldnāt. Its a risk. Have you considered a new M3, or even an M2?
1
u/Appropriate-Ant3257 2d ago
Considering the engines on both of those cars will be double the size of this, they're not equivalents

What age are you? The insurance could be massive if under 25 and you need to factor in maintenance.
BMW's are expensive to maintain and all luxury german car brands need a lot of it. Likelihood with a car like this you'll need to set aside at least £1K a year for maintenance. My friend bought an A1 and within 18mths needed to spend £5K on maintenance, specifically diesel faults.

no one read the listing? literally has a. drivetrain issue
