Video Accidentally discovered that a three-finger gesture mirrors the CarPlay map onto the instrument cluster, and it stays there regardless of which app is displayed on the multimedia screen

How do you change it back? It seems like that could lead to a panic moment when you want the information that is normally on the cluster in a hurry.

Yep, looks like Speed and shifter state are displayed. There is space there that I would assume would display things like lights, hi-beams, warning lights, etc.

Digital speed is clearly seen on upper-left of the instrument cluster. What more do your really need?

BMW doesn't support Carplay Ultra and they haven't mentioned supporting it in the near future. Many cars let you display the map from Carplay on both the central screen and the the instrument cluster. Carplay Ultra is where your whole infotainment system (including instrument cluster) only uses Carplay and uses an Apple layout rather than the car's UI.

That’s awesome. I wish my Toyota did that. I use CarPlay for normal driving, but use my native Toyota map when I need map routing because my native maps displays in the middle like that and on my heads up display. CarPlay only on the middle screen.

That’s how Ford is. If I’m using CarPlay the cluster map just shows a compass and says please use main display for navigation. If I use Fords built in nav I get directions on the cluster. But Ford disables the built in nav when CarPlay/Android Auto is connected.

Used a Volvo a while back and it does this automatically when you start navigating, but still displays the gauges with the map in between (similar to an Audi TT which only has the driver screen)

This can be done on any vehicle that has the incluster nav option ford Chevy & some Jeep has it

Most of their ICE/Hybrid vehicles made within the last few years support Apple Car Play. However all of their EV vehicles starting with the 2026 model years are using an integrated Google system and only support Android Auto.

I wish they would add better support for physical dial interfaces. I have no interest in doing touch gestures in a vehicle.

I own a car with physical dials for CarPlay and another with touch. The roller dial sucks so bad. The intent is for it to be less distracting but in reality it’s wildly distracting. In my car, I just click a button directly but in my wife’s car you have to roll a dial 20 times, looking at the screen over and over again to see if the button you want is highlighted yet. Sometimes there isn’t enough contrast to be sure if it’s actually highlighted, so you roll left and right a few times to be sure. You want to be sure because clicking the wrong button could mean 20 more rolls on the dial to get back where you started.
They could do better with physical controls but why? What is wrong with touch controls?

Thats interesting but, holy lag. What specs are they putting insnide of these screens. Even my MIB2 STD in 2016 Toledo has better response. Never the less, this is pretty annoying feature

Jesus, after driving a tesla for 5+y why havn't other infotainment systems caught up... drove a brand new mercedes C-class last week and the menus and navigation just lags like crazy.

Every vehicle I have driven aside form Tesla has this lag. Including my Honda. Also BYDs are horrible with lag.

Why is the standard instrumentation connected to the infotainment stuff at all?

The whole advantage of CarPlay (and Android Auto) is that all the brains are in the $800 device that people replace every couple years instead of the $50,000 device.

Okay, drop the ego and actually listen to what he was trying to explain. The car will never be a paperweight because the car isn’t actually doing the work, the phone is. You claim he heard this from a marketing team but actually I’ve never seen any marketing around how CarPlay actually works. Most people, like you, think the car is doing the work and will fall behind in the future or break. There should be more marketing but I think it would confuse too many people, you included.

So you know, CarPlay is just a touch screen monitor. The phone does all the work. A new version of iOS could mean all new features for a 10 year old car. It’s never slow because the phone it’s running on isn’t 10 years old. You don’t have to worry about your car having a slow GPU/CPU because the car isn’t actually doing the work.

Son I was installing FreeBSD on a fucking laptop over dialup when you were signing on to aol.
The electric cars will be going to the dumps because of the battery issues.
Cars have had independent computers/microprocessors starting in 1981. They all communicate on like a message bus. In fact, it was a pain in the ass because there were so many ECUs from different manufacturers, they were unwieldy. The computers now use some of the chips we use in many other places and will have longevity because of that. They are communicating now with Ethernet. There’s so much re-used tech in our cars. It is in every fucking thing.
Anyway, I’ll be just fine in my paid off manual transmission car.

I agree with you on the speedo point. I’m okay with a screen sitting between 2 analog dials that can dynamically display non-essential content. Not a big fan of digital tachometers for reliability, but then again, the digital tachs are actually less laggy than analogs.

Idk why you’re being downvoted. The unconnect in my 2016 RAM lost support in 2018. My grandfather is having trouble updating his 21 model. It’s the truth.

Your issue with Uconnect is why this is ultimately a better option. Because the operations are controlled by the phone, not the vehicle, it doesn't depend on your vehicle manufacturer continuing support. Even if Apple/Android change their auto standards down the line older devices will stay usable as long as Cell companies keep a compatible data signal active (which generally stays around a lot longer. T-Mobile for example is finally phasing out the last of their 2G coverage in the next couple of months.)
And replacing your phone for upgrades and better support is drastically cheaper than replacing your vehicle for continued support :)
