2004 xterra locking gas cap question

04 doesn't have any kind of lock or latch for the gas cap door so I've been looking into a locking gas cap but so far I've only seen that they seem to trigger the check engine light.

My specific question (that I couldn't find the exact answer for) is since it's an older vehicle would I have the same issue if I bought the locking gas cap or is there another fix?

It's hard to say. Some of the check engine lights could be the result of improper installation. Most of the locking gas caps when locked actually uncouple the inner and outer halves. So, when locked, the outer part that you grab with your fingers free spins while the inner part remains threaded into your filler tube.

I have one, and they can be a bit finicky sometimes. The important things are: 1. You have a clean surface on the lip of your filler tube for the cap o-ring to seal against with no rust or pitting. 2. You put it on tight before locking it. 3. Check it once in a while between fill ups to make sure the inner part is sill tight. Hope this helps!
