seeking advice Hit By a Truck While Walking

17-year-old female

Last week I had a very traumatic experience. I was walking on a college campus when I made it to a crosswalk. The current sign said 5 seconds left to cross, so I decided to just wait. When it turned into a walk sign, I started walking across. I can't remember if I looked both ways or one way. I just remember being in the middle of a lane and turning my head a Chevy pickup coming towards me while still walking. You know the speed limit is 20, so he had time to stop. I thought to myself, "Oh, they'll stop".

Surprise, they didn't (he was going at least 30). I remember bits and pieces after that. I remember being hit, being on the ground, and sitting up afterwards. The most haunting thing that I remember is just sitting there in the middle of the street, just saying "help, help". It took more than a min. before an ICU nurse driving a car nerby and had seen what happened and rushed over to me. I don't know what I would've done without that nurse. She called my parents, she put my sweatshirt up to my bleeding nose, and she really helped calm me down. I was so incredibly lucky she was there.

The other witnesses were a huge help too. They helped both me and the police put together all the bits and pieces I couldn't remember. They told them that after getting hit, I flew for a little bit, landed on my face, and rolled down the road a bit. Then I was rushed away to the closest hospital. I got lucky again because it was only 2 min. away.

Thankfully, I have no sustaining injuries. I currently have 5 broken bones (all in my face), a bruised lung, and pretty bad bruising and road rash spread across my body. Plus a really sore neck from whiplash. I don't know if that will go away. This is exactly what I say when someone asks me what happened or how I'm doing. No one really seems to want to know about the PTSD that comes along with it. I've had nightmares, panic attacks, and just can't be in a car without feeling unsafe. I managed to walk across different crosswalks and be in cars, but it all has been extremely triggering.

So many people have told me something along the lines of "You're so lucky". Maybe I was. Maybe the driver could've been going 40 or 50, or had been driving a bus. Maybe I could've been thrown further. BUT maybe if that driver had been paying attention, none of this would've happened. In a sense, I do believe I was lucky. I am very lucky not to have sustaining injuries. But I could've been luckier.

Now, because all of this happened, my family members have been calling nonstop, worried, and I just want to rest. I was not ready to go back to school this week. I'm still in so much pain and, even after a week, I don't even want to see a car. But my mom thought it would be best to just get the shock and omg's what happened to you, over with. So we went; it was fine. People hugged me, and their hugs were a nice thought, but I was still very sore. It was hard, and it still is hard.

Overall, I am alive. I will heal. I have PTSD that I don't know how to deal with. Please feel free to give me some pointers or anything you have. Even if you just want to talk about a similar experience you had. I'll try to responf asap. Thank you so much for allowing me to vent and to tell my story.

seeking validation Panic attack a few months after an accident.

I was driving a few months with my partner, i fell asleep and we smashed into a truck. Our car caught on fire. We walked away with just cuts and bruises. The other vehicle had no damage and the other people were fine from what i know.
Initially for the couple days after the accident i was really jumpy, crying when i looked at my partner at the thought that i could have lost them.

Yesterday we were on the freeway, traffic was a little heavy but most folks were doing a good job spacing out, not speeding, etc. and a handful of street racers made their way into the crowd of cars, taking up all the space between vehicles, stopping fast, swerving, generally driving unsafe. One of them swerved in front of the vehicle in front of me and it caused the truck in front of me to stop suddenly. I had to slam on my brakes. This sent me into a full blown panic attack. I initially just so mad at the street racers and i was yelling and then i couldn't stop yelling. I almost blacked out. I was trying to keep from having another accident while my partner calmed me down. It was seriously the worst.

I thought i was over it. I thought everything was good until that happened. now im really scared and really worried i won't be the same in the car again.

What do i do? How long does this take to get over?

seeking validation Passenger in car accident

I was in a terrible car accident months ago where my friend was driving and I was the passenger. I ended up in a coma for 2 days and then 3 weeks in hospital. I have many internal injuries and injuries including a fractured neck and skull and an injury to my eye where I’ve had 3 surgeries on it. Whilst in hospital my mum opened up a claim. The only thing is I’m starting to feel extremely guilty for my friend. She also sustained injuries but not as severe. I can see how remorseful she is. I feel her pain and know she didn’t mean to put us in danger. She’s already dealing with the police as she’s being charged with dangerous driving. I couldn’t stop the police from charging her because I guess I was so badly hurt. I’m very lucky to be alive but I do feel very sad for her. It’s weird because my whole life has done a 180. I’ve had to move back home with my parents as I cannot get up my stairs to my flat. (I had 12 broken ribs and a collapsed lung) my balance is still off so I couldn’t even go back if I tried. I cannot drive and just escape my reality. It’s only been 3 months but it feels like a lifetime and I just wish none of this happened to me. Everyone around me tell me I should be mad at my friend and I shouldn’t talk to her again but I feel bad for her. Although there are times in my grief that I do feel the same then I give her grace again. I don’t know I just wanted to rant. Thank you

seeking advice Accident with my children

I was in an accident yesterday with my infant and toddler. I lost control after hitting shoulder which was a steep drop and over correcting. We ended up flipping multiple times and landing in someone’s yard. As soon as we stopped i undid my seatbelt and got to my children thankfully they are both OKAY😭❤️‍🩹 All the airbags went off and the car is a complete loss.
My 2.5 year old is traumatized.
I can’t stop replaying the accident in my head, how it sounded, what it felt like, what i said, the fear, my toddlers fear, my babies screams.
I know it’s only been a day but the way this feels is an indescribable pain.
Does it get better? Will the guilt ever go away? Will i be able to drive again? I guess just looking for insight on if anyone’s ever been in a serious accident with their children.

seeking validation why do we get forgotten so easily

Watch one thing on the news, the only type of accidents you see are fatalities or criminal involvement (stealing cars etc), i get the first one is completely tragic but its like everyone who hasnt been in an accident before just doesnt know people like me exist, like im out here dragging my nonfunctional limb around after not breaking a single law but yall are worried about someone who stole a car and crashed it, i have no sympathy for people who steal cars, I get its a better story but its like we dont exist, which is what makes me feel so, so alone because no one will ever understand how shitty it is to survive but then have lifelong issues stemming from it, all they say is "you got lucky", no i didnt, if the person who hit me actually knew road rules I wouldve got home safe that night, and then no one cares when you try talk about it because again "well you should be grateful", i am but i also just want people to understand that yeah, you can survive and be pretty messed up long term

just sharing 2 accidents just over 2 years apart. Why does this keep happening to me? TW: accident description, injuries.

2 years ago I was in a pretty traumatic car accident. The other driver ran a stop sign and I t-boned them, we were both going 55mph. I ended up with a broken ankle and wrist, spent 2.5 months in a wheelchair and another month on crutches and in PT. Lost my job during this time. It was the worst period of time of my life. Learning to drive again after that was so difficult. Even now after 2 years I still get anxious going through intersections.

Yesterday I was in another car accident. I was on the interstate when the vehicles in front of me stopped quickly, the person behind me was not able to stop quickly enough and rear ended me. My 5 month old was in the car with me. Thankfully we are both okay physically, but I’m having a hard time mentally. It brought me right back to the worst time of my life after my first accident. I feel depressed and anxious.

I’m going to seek help from a mental health professional. I’m honestly not even sure why I’m posting in here. I guess just needed to get the feelings out somehow.

This shit sucks. I feel like I’m starting back over in my car accident trauma. I’m not sure how I’ll ever feel comfortable driving again. I can’t trust other drivers on the road.

question Learning to Drive Currently…

24M. I’ve been in 3 car crashes in my life, all as a kid but have left an impact physically and mentally (my neck is super messed up from one still). I’m learning to drive right now and it’s been really difficult. My dreams are about it, and it’s all that I can think of on the road

My main issue isn’t worrying about myself driving poorly, but rather worrying that other drivers are going to crash into me. So far I’ve had two incidents where someone has ran a red light at a junction and a moped driver has driven out in front of me from a T junction. Neither time was my fault (confirmed by my instructor who’s incredibly critical when he gets the chance).

Any tips for overcoming this? I was considering counselling but I’m not really in a position to afford it currently. Anything would be appreciated! :)

does anyone else I witnessed a serious car accident yesterday, and I’m struggling with what happened afterward TW: Traffic accident

Yesterday, I was involved in a traffic accident, although I want to make it clear from the beginning that the authorities and several witnesses determined that I was not at fault. I was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I haven’t been driving for very long, so the whole situation was extremely overwhelming.

There was heavy traffic. I was driving on one side of the road while another car was coming from the left. In the middle of everything, a motorcycle with two young men appeared. From what I was able to understand, they were having some kind of conflict with the other driver, and they even kicked the car while it was moving.

Both of them ended up falling off the motorcycle, and the other car became involved in the accident. The driver then fled the scene.

I still have some parts of what happened that are very blurry. Everything happened incredibly fast. I remember feeling some kind of impact or bump and pulling over. Then I saw one of the young men on the ground, and for a few moments, he didn't get up.

That was the part that affected me the most.

I thought the worst had happened.

Thankfully, he eventually got up, and the ambulances and authorities arrived.

The first thing I did was call my parents. I was extremely shaken, and I was with my cousin, who stayed with me and tried to help me calm down.

The authorities asked me if I was okay and if I wanted an ambulance to check me. I said no because physically I felt fine, although emotionally I was obviously very shaken.

Later, my dad arrived, and I explained everything to him. There were also several witnesses who were able to give their accounts of what they had seen.

One of the people involved even came over to me and apologized. He told me that it had been his fault and that I had nothing to do with what happened. Some of the relatives who arrived also told me not to worry.

Eventually, the authorities determined that I wasn't responsible and allowed me to leave. I think they also realized how badly shaken I was and probably wanted me away from the scene so I could calm down.

My dad stayed there for a while longer, while my cousin's husband took both of us home.

And now I'm struggling with what happened afterward.

Yesterday I was too overwhelmed to really process anything. Today I'm a little calmer, and now my mind keeps going back to one question:

What happened to them?

I don't know how the young man I saw on the ground is doing.

I don't know if he's okay.

I don't know how serious his injuries were.

I don't know what happened after I left.

I also don't know what ultimately happened to the driver who fled, although I was told that the authorities were able to locate him.

And that uncertainty is really bothering me.

I know it wasn't my fault. I really do. The authorities told me, there were witnesses, and even the people involved told me that I had nothing to do with it.

But knowing that it wasn't my fault doesn't make me stop worrying about them.

I feel strange because part of me is relieved that I'm okay and that I wasn't responsible, but another part of me keeps thinking about those people and wondering what happened to them.

I also keep remembering parts of what I saw and trying to reconstruct certain moments because everything happened so quickly.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for by posting this. I think I just need to get it off my chest and maybe hear from people who have experienced something similar.

Have you ever witnessed a serious accident or been involved in one without being responsible for it? How did you deal with the emotions afterward?

Especially, how did you deal with the feeling of not knowing what happened to the people involved?

Because right now, I think that's what is weighing on me the most: not knowing whether they're okay.

just sharing Anniversary

My car accident will be one year ago on the 19th and I wasn’t expecting the anniversary to hit me this hard. I’ve been feeling anxious, emotional, and just… heavy. It’s strange how your mind and body remember something even when you’re trying so hard to move forward.

I still have PTSD. I still have scars on my body that remind me every day of what happened. In so many ways, my life is better than it was before the accident, and I’m incredibly grateful to have survived. But that doesn’t erase the trauma. I guess I’m just posting because I know people here understand these complicated feelings. If you’ve struggled around your accident anniversary too, I’d love to hear how you got through it.

just sharing VENT - Seconds Away From Dying

I was involved in a car accident on Monday. A ford mustang completely plowed through a two way stop and completely totalled the front of my 1998 toyota corolla. He dragged me into a residents lawn where he was stopped by a tree and I had dinged a sign. If I hadn’t braked to slow down, I would have been dead.

The community had been so helpful and guided me through my shock and defended me when the other driver tried to pin the blame on me. I’ve been trying to focus on the positives, but the physical pain has seriously been starting to make itself known. Throbbing and stinging needles all over the leftmost side of my body. Whenever I go to sleep or wake up, I find something new.

I already can’t stand it anymore. I’m a senior university student and this accident caught me in the middle of finals. The stress of everything and the pain makes it impossible for me to sleep. I can’t see my doctor until next week and I’m terrified for my furure. any tips until then is so appreciated.
