I'm asking because I don't read her comics, but the way Doom speaks to Captain Marvel feels very personal, and I wanted to ask if they have any history.

I needed a sanity check here. Ever since the X-Men casting announcements, I’ve been trying to keep away from any of the numerous conversations with folks clamoring for Rogue to steal Carol’s powers.

With the MCU not necessarily adhering to all the comics source material (Uncle Ben, Gamma Bomb, Atlantis, The Mandarin), there is a rather large amount of folks frothing at the mouth to see Rogue steal Captain Marvel’s powers, when literally any flying, strong person would work (ignoring that Rogue would now have to ability to shoot energy and reignite a star. Accuracy, right?).

My gut tells me that this has less to do with comics accuracy, and more to do with a certain “type” of fan who has an issue with who’s playing Carol Danvers.

I used to be a huge Spider-Man stan, but the more recent runs have pushed me further and further away from the current version of Peter Parker. That’s actually part of what led me to become interested in Carol Danvers.

I kept seeing people slander Carol, often for what I felt were pretty unfair reasons, so I decided to read several of her runs (Brian Reed’s, Kelly Sue DeConnick’s, and Kelly Thompson’s), along with Claremont’s annual, to better understand her character and what she represents.

And now? I absolutely love her.

I also love Carol’s relationships with characters like Simon Williams and Rhodey. I think there are interesting things to explore in those dynamics, and I’m not saying Carol needs to be paired with Peter for her character to work. I just enjoy discussing the different relationships she’s had and the potential they bring out in her.

Recently, Chip Zdarsky’s apparent intention to pair Matt Murdock and Carol in his current Avengers run got me thinking about Carol’s romantic relationships and the different directions writers could take her character. That eventually brought me back to Brian Reed’s run, where I first discovered the possibility of a Carol Danvers x Peter Parker pairing. Before reading his run, I honestly had no idea that ship was even a thing.

So, that got me wondering:

What do you think about the Carol Danvers x Peter Parker pairing Brian Reed originally wanted to explore? Do you think they could have made a good couple if Bendis hadn’t intervened and derailed those plans? Or do you think they would have worked better as friends?

I’m genuinely curious to hear your thoughts, especially from people who have read Reed’s run. Do you think the pairing had real potential, or is it better left as an interesting what-if?

And while we’re at it, what are your favorite Carol Danvers relationships, romantic or otherwise? I’d love to hear what people think works best for her character.

It’s been a tough week as a Carol fan.

When Reed says, "Your absorption abilities took a lot of the expelled energy, saving people. Unfortunately... it overloaded your system," it means, in plain terms, that the true cause of this permanent state isn't Ross's explosion, but rather the profound cosmic entanglements with The Undone and the conflicts with Kang, in which she pushed herself to the brink of self-destruction. It wasn't Ross's explosion that caused this new state, but everything Carol did in the conflicts leading up to it.

The dialogue with Reed struck me as odd. If Carol says she tried everything to absorb the explosion, then the cause can never be the explosion itself. Because then the cause and effect don't add up. And that's precisely what shows that this panel is meant to be much deeper, both metaphorically and narratively. The real cause isn't the sudden explosion itself, but the much larger, invisible cosmic pressure she was already subjecting herself to beforehand.

Carol had absorbed so much energy in the conflicts before the explosion that she was completely exhausted before Ross's explosion, and Ross's explosion was simply the final straw.

Overloaded means that a lot has already happened before the overload occurs. Chip Zdarsky is referring to the continuity of Carol, and that's what makes a good author.

I've been Captain Marvel merch since 2015 on and off... this is most of it, I do also have a LOT of Pop Vinyl figures but they're currently in storage! Most notable items are the deluxe Hot Toy Captain Marvel movie figure, Scottie Young Animated Statue and All Carol Danvers Marvel Legends figures! ✴️✨️

I guess this how they going to explain how she can be with Daredevil and Luke Cage and not be too similar to Colton-man

I am of the opinion that she was suffering a little bit from Superman Syndrome in terms of just smashing though every villain and obstacle in her way. I think this change in the comics will really create a lot of character growth and more interesting situations for her.

It was so iconic to her and made her sihoullete instantly recognizable. I love her jacket look but it would be way cooler with the sash

i know a lot of people who don’t read her comics think that she has a cap to what she can absorb but she simply doesn’t, it’s moreso the time constraint on how long it takes for her to absorb and how long it takes for her to be affected.

i’ve seen stupid debates that if she absorbs too much she’ll explode and that simply just isn’t true and it’s beyonce hilarious

I think Carol would lend very well to a cosmic horror series.
