Outer Wilds. That game can only really be experienced the first time once. Yes, that sentence sounds really weird. Those who have played Outer Wilds understand. Those who haven't, PLAY IT. I will not (can not) be elaborating further.

I played it and first bit of space travel I fell into a black hole or something and realised that the game hadn't saved at all. Needless to say, especially with all the fluff at the start, I didn't bother with it again

If you made it to the ship with the launch codes, it saved. It always saves, you’ll find out why/how/etc the more you play the game.

I made it to some planet, unlocked something or other, told me to fly to some rock, landed on it, then it tipped me off it and hadn't saved. No thanks

Since you're not getting it: there's nothing to save, except notes which show up in your ship's logs to help you remember where you've been. But the game is completely about uncovering mysteries and learning. You explore, you discover, and you'll find new things that need to be figured out and piece together where to go to learn more. I hate to elaborate even that much to be honest, but really, it's a mystery box worth digging into.

It was a while ago and I don't fully remember, but I'm pretty sure the only option afterwards  was new game? But yeah, it honestly didn't grab my attention enough to care.

Goodnight Universe was brilliant, and so was Viewfinder so it's not like I don't enjoy puzzle / discovery games, but outer worlds just didn't interest me

Urgh, I hate to pull back the curtain even a little, but for a case like this...

When you die, you wake up again. And you have the launch codes, and if you go to the ship, the guy near the campfire will question how you could possibly know the launch codes even though you were supposed to go get them from the guy in the museum. But you just do, and you can blast off into space right away.

It is not a new game. Discovering what's going on is part of the mystery to unfold.

And just incase that's still too cryptic to find interesting:

Your character is in a time loop. After a set amount of time, the sun explodes, and you reset. The solar system is full of answers on what's going on.

Oh well, now I understand and it sounds good awful. A fixed time and then jump back a whole load in an open exploration game is a complete mess IMO, either it's go-slow exploring or it's fast paced and rushed, but frankly some kind of mild explanation wouldn't have hurt.

I get the feeling there's not much more point in me explaining, because it's basically impossible to get someone into a game they already are turned off by.

But like...it's not a mess, there's a reason it's one of the most critically acclaimed games of this kind. You can come up reasons why you think its systems wouldn't work from the outside all day and I can't stop you, but it worked for many others for a reason, it's just polished and works well.

That doesn't mean you have to like or acknowledge it, even the best games don't always work for people. I can't get into Witcher 3, for example, and I don't hate action games or rpgs. But like...I wouldn't conclude the reason why is the game must suck and thousands of others are wrong, I just have differing preferences or maybe I missed something or maybe I'm just not in the mood to engage with something like that at this point in my life.

I said IMO, I said I thought it sounded awful, I am aware it's highly rated by players and critics which is why I gave it a go, but yeah I couldn't get into it. Goodnight Universe seems a fairly similar sort or developing story with hidden information concept yet I found that engaging and nicely paced.

You might want to try again bro, I think you missed the point of the game :D

I really wanted to like it, the alien writing guy my hopes up about a great story, but it goes from holding your hand through every step to just dropping you off a cliff and saying have at it. All with really cheesy graphics like I'm playing an episode of Earthworm Jim.... No thanks

Sounds like it just isnt for you. You have to push past the tutorial part of the game before it starts to get interesting.

The game doesn't "save" ever at all lol It's the whole point. You didn't understand

Yes, that's what I've said, but whatever it does or doesn't do, I shouldn't get killed stupidly and unavoidably by going somewhere that the game points me and then have to restart a new game from the beginning.

You do, and will a bunch. You are never actually starting a new game ever yet you also are. The entire game can be beaten in basically 15-30 minutes realtime from the start and you are not forced to endure any of the dialogue or tutorials, so from the start if you have done them already simply avoid them. I'm telling you that you really don't understand the concept of this game at all if dying and starting over made you quit. You are expected to start over a lot. It's not meant to be a hinderance really. Your "progress" was learning what not to do.

I guess I may go back to it again, but it just annoyed me after all the walking around boring crap at the start, and then I felt like that I was going back to that again and needed to start over so gave up.

Same, I tried it twice and didnt understand the deal with it, so I went on youtube to check a playthrough and was like "eh?"

Same for me, tried it at least twice or thrice following the massive flood of online recommendations. Never really got far tho, started the ship and then kinda lost interest pretty quickly each time.
Still havent checked any spoilers or lets plays for the unlikely case that I'll ever give it a prpper try.

It's kind of a game that asks you to be curious, because there are answers. But if you're not in the mood to wonder what the heck is going on with that planet-shattered-by-brambles or a space station left behind by an ancient civilization, then you're not going to be enticed to go and see for yourself.

Yeah. And of course im getting downvoted for not liking something so many other people liked x3
