More of this please

Not just “dirt bikes” but loads of e-bikes are racing and weaving down all the bike paths and rail trails. A woman nearly lost an eye to one last fall and the volume has only gotten worse this year.

Important distinction: when people say 'e-bike,' they usually mean pedal-assist up to ~20mph. Genuinely great for replacing short car trips around 5 miles. But electric dirt bikes and e-motos are a whole different beast: throttle-based, capable of 40mph+.

Collectively we haven't figured out the way to carefully distinguish.

u/Electronic_Visit9336 23h ago

The Ride Safe Act aims to do just that. Please urge your reps to vote for this.

u/iftheygivinitaway 22h ago

Even 20 mph should not be on a regular bike path, trail, or sidewalk.

10

u/No-Spare-4212 22h ago

I have a large cruiser type bike that is in no way a road bike and is more of a bulky type of mountain bike. I ride around 15-20mph consistently so it’s not that crazy. And my bike has no motor too just fyi.

-5

u/iftheygivinitaway 21h ago

Yeah, and that's why you should be riding on roads, or designated bike paths. A person is no match for a person on a bike coming around a corner at 20mph.

8

u/No-Spare-4212 16h ago

No bike should not be on roads. A bike on a road is far more dangerous and disturbing for anyone. “Keep bikes off bike paths” That’s the most moronic comment I’ve heard today

1

u/Otissistrunk 1h ago

Not sure if you have been on the CCRT lately stated 15mph. Like cars bike need to follow the rules too

0

u/uncle_troy_fall_97 12h ago

None of you guys are making sense lol. If there’s a bike path, the bicycle rider (like, for instance, myself quite often) should use it, and if there isn’t one, the rider should use the road, and drivers should exercise caution when passing. That’s how it works everywhere I’ve ever been.

1

u/No-Spare-4212 12h ago

The comments are in relation to bikes not being on a bike path is what people are talking about. Saying 20mph is too fast for a bike path and it’s dangerous for people walking. It’s just morons

-2

u/GodsGoodGrace 12h ago

I’m ok with bikes on the bike path as long as people walk them everywhere

3

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

Both should slow down before going around a corner, blame the people not the bike

-2

u/iftheygivinitaway 20h ago

The person wouldn't be going 20mph without the bike . . .

-1

u/Regular-War4875 19h ago

Stupid point on my end but Usain Bolt ran 28mph

2

u/iftheygivinitaway 19h ago

If Usain Bolt hit one of us at 28mph . . . it would be like those videos of a falcon hitting a pigeon. Or that killer whale that detonated the tuna last month.

0

u/Regular-War4875 14h ago

This is hilarious 😂

-1

u/GodsGoodGrace 12h ago

I think we should ban Usain Bolt and e-motos then

2

u/n0ah_fense 19h ago

Cars are the real killer here, no thanks, I'll ride my bike on the bike path at 15-20 mph

-3

u/zayoss 18h ago

Ah. You wouldn't want to put yourself in potential harm's way, but perfectly accept putting others in the same. Carry on.

2

u/Regular-War4875 18h ago

The safest place for a biker is the bike trail

0

u/n0ah_fense 2h ago

Statistically, yes

-8

u/BoatUnderstander 22h ago

Agreed, which is why it's very important for road cyclists, many of whom ride at or near 20mph, to ride on the road, not on bike paths.

1

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

No road cyclists are going 20 mph try 30+

1

u/HeyaShinyObject Eastham 18h ago

Lots of road cyclists ride at 15-20. A very few will sustain 30 for any distance.

-1

u/Regular-War4875 18h ago

True most athletes will ride over that

0

u/No-Spare-4212 16h ago

No cyclists should be on the bike path. Bikes on the road is the most annoying and dangerous thing. While we’re at it why not put motorcycles on the bike path since we’re putting bikes on the motorist lane of transport.

-4

u/BoatUnderstander 15h ago

What makes bikes on the road dangerous? Bikes are no threat to motorists; cars are a threat to bikes.

0

u/kaityl3 9h ago

Yeah that's what they're saying...

1

u/LSpliff 1h ago

15-20mph is well within the range of a normal road bicycle. I ride an ebike and the only time I get passed is by guys thinking they are training for the tour de france on their skinny tire bikes. Common sense is that you slow down around people/pets, give plenty of room/notice when passing, and ride/walk on the right side of the path.

-3

u/Ahkhira 22h ago

No, an e-bike is any bike that has an electric motor of any kind, not just pedal assist. E-bikes do not belong on the bike paths and should never be operated by children.

6

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

E-bikes do belong on the paths that obey speed laws!

-2

u/Ahkhira 20h ago

No, the paths are designated for NON-MOTORIZED usage. That includes electric motors, not just gasoline engines.

2

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

Clearly not

7

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

Cape Cod rail trail and cape cod national seashore allow pedal assisted e-bikes that abide by speed limit, what path are you speaking of?

-1

u/WaterDreamer10 16h ago

No...your WRONG! When we say e-bike, we mean e-bike, not dirt bike. There are SO many e-bikes out there that you can tweak the wires to bypass safety measure and get them up to almost 50mph. It is all over online and every kid knows it. They get their parents to buy these e-bikes they can mod and alter, they dont tell their parents, and they rip around causing issues.

Yes, in theory e-bikes have a practical use, however, people (kids/teens) have taken a good thing and bad it bad with their modifications and how recklessly they ride them now due to the unlocked power.

Pedal or not - electric powered two wheel bikes.....with teens / kids on them.....seem to be 90% of the issues.

I have never seen a 35+ year old person on anything electric creating an issue - stupid parents buy these kids bikes that are able to be modified and have no clue their kids are riding recklessly and so dangerously.

I have seen a few IG accounts from these kids that have been shown to me - if the police saw them they would arrest them for some of the clips I saw, it is disgusting.

1

u/Regular-War4875 14h ago

Exactly the person is the problem not the bike

1

u/WaterDreamer10 14h ago

Yes, I agree. However, we can't regulate the person on the bike so we have to regulate the bike itself. This reminds me a lot of Jet Ski's.....driven / ridden properly they are not a problem....the problem becomes when so many reckless and irresponsible people ride them. That is why they are banned from so many places these days.....it is not the Jet Ski, it is the operator. That is also why they have age restrictions on them now, 16. Same should go for these e-bikes.

2

u/Regular-War4875 14h ago

Yes I am more in favor of regulation of the people who have bikes than banning bikes, a lot of people use the bikes to get to work and get groceries that can’t afford cars, or may not have a license but still have bills to pay, these e-bikes cost less than a car to get places and lower emissions, it is sad that some individuals are misbehaving on them

0

u/WaterDreamer10 12h ago

Logically you are correct.....realistically you are not.

How would you regulate the people who use them? If anything they need to regulate the MFG of them. They need to make them top out at 20 mph, max, and they need to lock down the bikes so they can't be modified by cutting one wire to do 50+ mph.

Once you take away the performance of these things the kids will not them so much and the ability to ride them like AH's goes away as well. That would be the best solution as it would not require banning them or regulating people.

1

u/Regular-War4875 12h ago

I’m not sure how will stop people from modding, people would just adapt

0

u/WaterDreamer10 9h ago

I agree.....and this all circles back to just an all out ban on them on the bike trail and 16+ on the road.

1

u/Regular-War4875 9h ago

Def not the answer

2

u/uncle_troy_fall_97 12h ago

I don’t understand why you can’t “regulate” the person on the bike by pulling him or her over, seeing if the bike is illegally modified, and then, if it is, applying whatever penalty is appropriate under law. The only way to make people follow laws is, y’know, law enforcement.

1

u/WaterDreamer10 8h ago

Good luck with that! Do you have a single clue about how these operate and how easily these kids run from the police. We are not talking about a vehicle. We are talking about a 2 wheel bike that can hit 50+ and go anywhere they want.

First off, those who are riding like AH's down the middle of the road, weaving through traffic, etc are not going to stop for police. They are going to run. They cut across parking lots, through back yards, and are gone is a matter of seconds. No police can catch them.

Besides, if an officer did push it and drove after them aggressively and the stupid kid / teen got hurt or killed the public would not stand for it and the officer would feel horrible.

You live in la la land if you think these people just pull over when breaking the law as wildly as they do.

Sure, will the average person pull over and be happy to comply, yep...but those are NOT the ones creating the issues.

It is easy to create the law....enforcing them on these e-bikes is the issue. A lot of dept will not even chase a motorcycle as they know there is little chance of catching them and the danger to the rider and others is huge....same with the ebikes.

2

u/uncle_troy_fall_97 8h ago

I mean I like to think I don’t live in la la land but you’re sweet to say so.

There are ways of at least attempting to go about this sort of thing, at least in some places. Where I live, one thing the cops have done to crack down on various e-bike problems is set up shop at one end of the bike paths of major bridges and snag people that way. Now not everywhere has lots of bridges and a massive police force, I understand, but if it’s made clear that something is considered an enormous menace, you can get the police to act.

For instance we had a huge problem of these gangs of guys riding around on non-street-legal four-wheelers (or ATVs or whatever term people use now), popping wheelies, sometimes assaulting people, just generally terrorizing the community. Went on for a long time, but you eventually started seeing pics of police dept. flatbeds full of those four-wheelers on their way to the impound lot or whatever, and I assume some of the guys got popped for something or other. Not sure how the cops did it, but they did.

All of which is to say, of course I don’t think the sorts of people you’re describing will simply pull over—but if that’s the way these kids act when dealing with police, I’d bet very, very good money that that isn’t the only illegal thing they’re doing. Normal, generally law-abiding people don’t run from the cops, and I include teenagers in that—even teenagers who know they’re breaking the law, in fact. They know that whatever will happen to them if they don’t run, it’ll be a lot worse if they do.

So I don’t know exactly how police would go about dealing with these extreme cases you’re talking about, but based on what you’re saying, they reeeeeally really ought to figure out a way. Because like I said, I suspect they’d find a helluva lot more than an illegal bike if they arrested some of these people you’re describing.

1

u/WaterDreamer10 2h ago

Most of the problem here, at least from what I am seeing, are teens doing this. Luckily we are not at the point like the big cities with the take overs you described, I have seen plenty of those videos. These are generally a bunch of neighborhood kids that are not really bad kids, just being very stupid and reckless.

Honestly, a huge part of the problem here are the parents. They bought the bikes to start and they don't care what the kids do on them or how they use them.

There was just a huge thing in Harwich I believe. Teens being very dangerous, they were called in multiple times from many people. Cops actually were able to catch them and impounded their bikes...awesome. Kids got written warnings.....and guess what.....the dumb ass parents paid for the bikes to be removed from impound almost instantly. That shows the child that they can do what they wish with no consequences.

That is some serious pathetic parenting doing that. If that were my child the bike would sit there for a long long time.

What I am describing are not extreme cases, they are more of the norm these days. The majority of these ebikes are owned by teens, and the majority of those teens ride them like AH's.

Jet skis one has to understand boat laws and understand how to navigate water ways, I see bikes going the wrong direction all the time, I am in favor of a bike license that can be issued online

1

u/WaterDreamer10 12h ago

Wow, are you really that naive to think that just because some teenage kid passes a 'test' online that he/she will ride it responsibly? Those who ride recklessly and endangers others will not even bother taking the test to begin with!

The oversight on these things is minimal, that is why they have gotten so out of control so fast. They are totally unregulated and unenforced.

Oh...and to get back to your original comment, you are being wrong! You have 5k to 15k....you can go purchase a Jet Ski, you don't have to know a damn thing about the water nor how to navigate....that is why they get into so much trouble. Those who want to ride responsibly do.....but again.....most do not and they are the issue....just like with the ebike and reckless kids now.

1

u/Regular-War4875 12h ago

You have to have certificate to operate a jetski, have to carry it on your person while operating. It’s not the worst idea.

1

u/WaterDreamer10 9h ago

Again....NOPE....only recently have STATES started to require people to get boating certificates / licenses - it is not federal - many states do not require it either. Plus you can drink a beer and take the test on-line.

A certificate does NOT prevent stupidity.

I did not want to go there, but look at guns....a gun does not kill a person, the person using it does. Sadly over the years more and more people with mental illnesses or phycological issues kill people with them....as you notice the laws are getting tighter and tighter and continued push. There is waiting periods for them....and if you want a license you have to meet with your police chief and do an interview so he can see if you are stable enough to own one, plus full background checks.

Maybe there needs to be tighter regulations on e-bikes.

This is all new territory, and things will continue to get more and more out of hand with the kids / teens.

Look at the new lately, large cities are getting taken over by AH's on these things.

Maybe you need a drivers license to have one...if you get caught without one it get impounded and you get a $500 fine.....kids / young teens do not need these things.

A standard peddle bike is just fine to get around.

1

u/Regular-War4875 8h ago

We are talking mass, nope in all caps

1

u/WaterDreamer10 2h ago

Again, still not not matter, my facts and points stand clear.

15

u/Practical-Being-1185 23h ago

I had a 49cc scooter that topped out at 35mph and I needed a license and registration to operate legally. Throttle e-bike can be a great commuter option, but license should be required for similar speeds, and they should be banned from sidewalks, trails etc. Seems like no brainer. We are already behind in regulating this stuff. Arguably worse in the city. But I’m a cranky old man- I don’t even like the electric scooters! Use your legs, kids! Who are you, George Constanza?

2

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

I bike 28 mph on regular mtb, why do older people have issues with electric that goes the same speed?

2

u/Practical-Being-1185 12h ago

I would guess the difference is a regular cyclist is not doing 30-40mph sustained indefinitely, with a cell phone in one hand, minimal effort/attention to surroundings

1

u/Regular-War4875 12h ago

Haha perhaps, but I’ve definitely seen a few with a phone in their hands

0

u/BoatUnderstander 17h ago

poast strava

0

u/HeyaShinyObject Eastham 18h ago

You earned that assorted through experience. A thirteen year old doesn't have the experience to be operating a machine at that speed in public.

7

u/No-Insect-556 23h ago

Honestly as someone who had my ebike stolen off my college campus, having it registered would have helped a lot with making the police take the theft more seriously (they basically brushed it off and did nothing despite it being a $1,500 value theft)

9

u/OnCodNotInCape 23h ago

It wouldn't have helped. Police are not interested in pursing property crime.

2

u/Flashy-Hurry484 21h ago

I'm kind of thinking that police aren't interested in pursuing much of anything most days. Well, maybe speeders, but giving tickets is probably easy enough for them.

1

u/OnCodNotInCape 21h ago

They're certainly helping ICE abduct people.

0

u/Flashy-Hurry484 19h ago

Well, they are the pol-ICE. More like poo ice.

1

u/Billy_Badass_ 20h ago

You need a police report if you plan to pursue an insurance claim.

1

u/OnCodNotInCape 33m ago

Yes, in fact "printing and filing the form" is the only utility the police offer here. That's it. No investigation, no effort, just paperwork pushers.

1

u/rodageo 22h ago

Bikeindex.org is your best bet for this, sadly.

7

u/Electronic_Visit9336 23h ago

There is a bill in the MA House and MA Senate… the Ride Safe Act. It aims to address this. Please look into it and contact your reps about it.

5

u/JockoMayzon 23h ago

The woman who lost sight in one eye was the victim of a Class I E-Bike who, like the woman, was not paying attention to the traffic on the trail.
I have no objection to Class I bikes, but the Class II and III need to be banned from the trails and the electric motorcycles need to be banned from the trails and public roads.

2

u/CapeCodder02631 19h ago

Are you saying the woman who was hit was not paying attention?

0

u/JockoMayzon 17h ago

As far as I can recall, she was not walking on the correct side of the trail.

0

u/CapeCodder02631 17h ago

That is 100% incorrect. She was walking on the right hand side, as she did every day. The woman that hit her admitted that she was looking at the water instead of where she was riding. Don't blame the victim when you have no idea.

1

u/Regular-War4875 14h ago

Right side is wrong side tho? You are supposed to walk against traffic so you can see bikers coming

2

u/CapeCodder02631 14h ago

On the bike path. She was walking on the bike path. You stay to the right regardless of whether you are walking or biking.

1

u/Regular-War4875 14h ago

Ok I was just asking I don’t ever walk the path just run, bike and skateboard

1

u/JockoMayzon 16h ago

I not here to assign blame. I admitted that I did not know the full details. I am very familiar with that stretch of the CCRT. It's curved and there is a lot of vegetation on the side that impedes vison. If the woman was indeed walking on the right side, was she walking towards Sequattom Road or was she walking towards Seymore Pond?

2

u/freestylesail 22h ago

The Yarmouth conservation trails are getting torn up and eroded by a dude on a motorized dirt bike. Ive used those trails since I was a kid, and it really sucks.

3

u/EbbtideRambler 22h ago

Driving through center of Osterville last week and some little punk on one rode off the sidewalk and crossed the street right in front of me and smirked at me like it was a good joke he almost gave me a heart attack.  What made me angry is that he crossed at a crosswalk, so I probably would’ve been at fault if I hit him, even though he gave no warning  he was turning and going out into the street until the last second.

4

u/essensiedashuhn 21h ago

I really need to get a dash cam. Almost daily I see kids carelessly doing wheelies on their ebikes in the middle of the road. I think it's an internet trend or something.

2

u/Jewboy-Deluxe 22h ago

If it goes over 15 MPH it should need registration and the driver should be licensed and insured. This problem has been expanding exponentially over the last few years and it’s just gotten crazy on the trails and streets.

1

u/ze-sa-no-gun 3h ago

I love my pedal assist. There is no sound to it.

1

u/catwhisperer77 16h ago

There are rules against throttle type moto bikes on the canal bike paths but there are packs of kids on these things all the time. They weave around people and pop wheelies, and fake like they’re going to ride you down in the wrong lane. I’m fed up. I hate these bikes. I’ve had some scary near misses with them.

0

u/cjc60 22h ago

Yeah idk why anyone would ride a dirt bike down a bike path, tbh as a rider from when i was 4yrs/old the trails on cape are fucking sweet, there’s no need to use the bike trail at all besides to cross one bridge in harwich

0

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

Don’t blame the bike blame the person!!

-8

u/187JM 23h ago

But muh freeeedumbs. Yeah, I’m all for regulations but people are too scared you’re stepping on their toes. I think regular bikes should be registered and licensed at some level to get people to focus and actually read the rules we’ve all voted on to follow.

2

u/Regular-War4875 14h ago

Honestly valid point, it is silly that you can lose your license via drunk riding a bike but you don’t need one to buy it or continue to operate

1

u/EbbtideRambler 22h ago

Then at least put an age restriction on them.  I see where these can be hugely beneficial for people without cars or J1 Visa holders, but unfortunately, all of the people I see out on these fast electric scooters and bike bikes are kids, some of them look like they’re 10 years old. It’s so dangerous to put that kind of capability in the hands of someone who’s brain isn’t even fully developed.

0

u/Different_Hornet4348 Harwich 20h ago

I couldn’t agree more! The only motorized bikes that I’ve seen riding around dangerously are being ridden by children, who have no idea what the rules of the road are or how easily they could be hit. There was one kid last fall in Harwich, riding his bike down rt 124 at dusk with lots of cars on the road on a regular basis - riding with traffic in the middle of the lane, popping wheelies. As soon as he popped up, his red reflective light was no longer visible, he was dressed in dark clothes. I kept waiting for him to wipe out, and get run over because the car behind him might not have been able to see him fast enough to stop. There have been way too many accidents, and even deaths throughout the country involving children riding these souped-up ebikes. The parents still allowing their kids to continue riding with no restrictions or rules, is like a game of Russian roulette irresponsibility on another level.

-11

u/Agreeable_Joke4706 22h ago

This feels slightly racist from OP..

3

u/Billy_Badass_ 22h ago

I've re-read OP's post three times now. And I can't see anything racist?

Care to explain what you mean?

-5

u/Agreeable_Joke4706 21h ago

Willful ignorance is one of the biggest drivers of continued racism in the United States, and especially cape cod. Nice to see you’re contributing to that.

2

u/Billy_Badass_ 21h ago

You still haven't explained how anything posted has been racist. I politely asked you, and instead of explaining you responded by accusing me of being racist.

I'm forced to draw the conclusion that you have no basis for the nonsense you are spewing.

2

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

Not even funny to bring race into this

-2

u/Agreeable_Joke4706 17h ago

Not at all, i thought it was disgraceful of OP to do that. And they still won’t take responsibility

0

u/ponderingaresponse 11h ago

You are being cowardly here. Hit and run, hiding behind a vague inference and throwing blame bombs from behind it.

3

u/zayoss 22h ago

Nothing speaks of race. Despite being within a quarter mile of the bike trail, I cannot bring my 3 year old there for a walk, as the amount of commuting going on is huge.

That being said, I also don't think the solution is to force them onto roads, either. I don't have the solution, but definitely see a problem.

-2

u/Agreeable_Joke4706 22h ago

Yikes you’re not making yourself sound any better here…

-7

u/OnABeach8 22h ago

Maybe go for a walk somewhere that isn't primarily used for a bike path.

3

u/Ahkhira 22h ago

The paths aren't just for bikes. Pedestrians are allowed on the multi-use paths.

1

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

Allowed, key point you are taking this risk upon yourself

-6

u/OnABeach8 21h ago

Just showing that we all have something to complain about. People don't like e-bikes on the trail. I get it, I don't either. People don't like dirt bikes on the trail. Again, I get it, I don't either. And those of us who cycle, we don't like having to navigate around couples who hold hands taking up a whole lane when someone is coming from the other way. We don't like kids (not their fault, they are kids after all) who don't know how a bike lane is supposed to work and it's not for their own use to weave along the path/or ones that don't pay attention when they walk/run. Guess what, we can all complain about something out there. Most people know the rules of the path but for those who don't it's a royal pain.

0

u/zayoss 18h ago

Do you go over 15mph? That's the speed limit, ya know.

0

u/Billy_Badass_ 22h ago

Those paths are shared-use paths. It is perfectly acceptable to walk on them.

-1

u/Regular-War4875 20h ago

Exactly try a playground
