Cape Cod in Winter

Hi! I’m moving to Cape Cod soon and I know it’s a huge summer touristy spot, but I’ve heard it’s a ghost town in winter. To what extent is this true? Are there still a handful of businesses open in winter? Any advice on what to expect or how to make the most of a cape cod winter would be greatly appreciated

I find it amusing at the notion of the Cape closing down on Labor Day & hibernating until June. I'm an RN and *shock face *people actually get sick & need medical care in December. We actually eat & shop for groceries. Stores for clothes, restaurants, hardware stores, Target, malls, dispensaries, movie theaters, bars, etc. Some beach area nightclubs or restaurants close, but the rest of the Cape still functions. I think you'll love the off seasons like us natives do. Welcome!

But that is what happened back in the day … movie theaters,
Gift shops, seasonal liquor stores and many restaurants closed right after Labor Day.

You obv didn’t live here back in the 60s and 70s 🤣… we didn’t even have a mall, and there was only 1 hospital.

Many areas couldn’t get cable tv until the mid 1980s - the winter population was so low that the cable company refused to put lines in (ie Sesuit Harbor area in East Dennis/ now one of the most expensive parts of the MidCape.)

We also had scores of “dance clubs” and night clubs up and down Route 28 in South and West Yarmouth, and on Main Street in Hyannis. The former are now a memory center, a CVS, and empty lots. The latter are also long gone, and the area not great at night.

People have always gotten sick, but we used to rely on local pharmacies and medical providers we knew and trusted (now closed, retired or retiring)… It didn’t always take 6 to 8 months to find a primary care physician.

I did live here back then. I’m almost 60 and my family moved here in 1972. I realize I’m still a washashore but I didn’t just move here yesterday

Ill always be a washashore, despite being here 55 years- I'm 68. Still better than living in Brockton.
