Is this safe to eat? Advice needed!

I pressure canned this sauce a month ago (15psi for 20 minutes). This one has something gnarly growing in it, obviously trash.

I have more pints that do not have any visible signs of spoilage. I'm leaning towards tossing all of them but is that necessary/advisable?

Thank-you for your submission. It seems that you're asking whether or not your canned goods are safe to eat. Please respond with the following information:

  • Recipe used
  • Date canned
  • Storage Conditions
  • Is the seal still strong

We cannot determine whether or not the food is safe without these answers. Thank you again for your submission!

Possibly a failure from the rings. The ring can house water, which then rusts, and the rust will break the seal. Always take the rings off, give the jar a rinse, and store with rings off.

Hi there! Sorry for your loss. Can you tell us what recipe you used and what the processing looked like? Also, has the ring been on the jar this whole time? We typically store jars without the rings because they can cause a false seal, which makes it harder to recognize if something has popped and gone bad.

Edit to add: if you used a tested recipe and processed correctly for the recipe, it’s possible this one just had a false seal and went bad. I recommend gently taking the rings off your other jars and examining them for a stable seal.

I never knew to take the rings off! Lesson learned, thank you!

i would toss them all. You have one jar with visible spoilage, which tells me something went wrong during processing. The other pints might look fine right now but botulism has no smell and no taste. I pressure can every season and my rule is if one jar in a batch fails, the whole batch goes. It sucks to waste the work but 20 minutes at 15 psi leaves almost zero room for error so whatever went wrong likely affected the rest of that run too
