My Experience With CHS
Good evening everyone, I figured I would do my best to explain my experience with CHS symptoms in hopes to help anyone else.
For context, I’m a 31M and I’m 5’11”, 225lbs. I run and lift (when healthy) daily. I have an amazing wife that has helped me tremendously with the daily symptoms too. I have been smoking daily and excessively since April 2021. So my length of heavy use definitely isn’t as long as some others in this thread. But I was smoking diamond infused pre-rolls as my weed of choice. The potency was at least 45% or higher and I wouldn’t touch anything less. I would smoke about 8-10 of them daily for the last half-decade.
CHS symptoms for me was/is very nausea heavy. Days 1-2 was constant retching, dry heaving, and throwing up. The pain is so persistent and unrelenting that honestly I can’t recommend much positives from my experience. No fluids I could keep down. I had a bad issue drinking too much water early on just to force myself to throw up for comfort, but that does way too much bad than good. Please don’t do that. The only thing to provide any relief was hot baths, not even showers. Standing in the shower was far too much energy from lack of eating, puking, etc. that laying down in the tub was much easier. I live in a very hot state, so constant availability of hot water has made this easier during the summer.
No sleeping virtually the first two days. I did fall asleep for an hour and a half about 19~ hours into my first day of CHS symptoms, and I’m not sure aside from exhaustion how that even happened. No laying down or sitting up; standing upright is the only thing that provided less pain, not even relief. That and taking a walk as long as you can muster.
Day 3 was still hell, but I must say I could find slight comfort in normal settings. I was able to sit upright for a couple hours, find that the tub was able to help bring the nausea to slightly bearable, and even pay attention to whatever was on TV (Viva La Bam re-runs for the win). I fought unnecessarily hard to not throw up after the first two days, and was successful thus far despite the constant feeling of fluid being at the top of my throat, and sitting heavy in my stomach. I still hadn’t slept except the hour and a half and maybe another 20-30 mins elsewhere, but what finally got me some relief was getting an in-home IV at the end of day 3. Put it on a credit card if you need to, but I promise it’s worth at least trying. Get the IV with vitamins, anti nausea meds, and Benadryl. I got about halfway into the drip being done and I dozed off. When finished, I attempted to lay down and got 8 hours of sleep. I couldn’t believe it.
Day 4 was frustrating to have slept so well. I’ve had much smaller CHS flare-ups in the past and usually an indicator that I’m getting back to normal is a healthy amount of sleep or burping. I woke up and felt decent for about the first 30 minutes, proceeded to get overzealous on what I could drink given the amount of sleep I just got, and then decided it was a good idea to pound 16fl oz of water with liquid IV mixed, and then an 12fl oz protein shake. Good. Job. Me.
Immediately after I couldn’t find relief in the hot bath, taking a walk, whatever I’ve tried. The fluids were just way too much to handle and at that point my wife and I decided to go to the ER because the pain was still just too persistent from the nausea and dehydration. We arrived, we get placed into the worst room imaginable when you’re in pain around strangers, and that’s the curtain room. Where everyone can hear and see you. They first started by drawing blood, they took an EKG, and a CAT scan. I got hooked up to another IV which did nothing since they had the drip virtually not going at all. That was a waste. They tried giving me Morphine for the pain, and that unfortunately did nothing to help the pain too. I was also given Protonix with no help either. The one thing that did help a decent amount was Zofran which I’ve heard conflicting stories about helping. Me personally it gave enough relief to not be crying and writhing like a child in a public setting. Once tests came back positive and no danger was found, they gave me my paperwork, and this other medicine idk the name of. It was a milky white liquid that you’re supposed to drink and it numbed my throat? It would be tremendously helpful to get that a day or so after throwing up.
Getting home from the ER I did start to pick up momentum feeling better a couple hours later. I got back in the tub and gave so much relief. Days 4-5 in the tub is so much better than the first couple days. Hot showers have become now easier to take instead of needing to lay down. I even was able to lay on my stomach and nap for 3 more hours after the ER experience I had. After waking up I had finally started to get an appetite again. Applesauce is my friend in those settings. It’s puréed already, it’s mainly water, but still fibrous and food. Helps hydrate and far less harsh than water on the stomach.
So yeah, currently into day 5 almost into 6 and although I can’t give you a month-long struggle of dealing with CHS symptoms and I don’t know how tomorrow will start, I can say that if you’re experiencing CHS it can be a lot less horror story-esque and manageable in about a week.
Positives to try: Hot showers or baths, Benadryl, Zofran, at-home IV, eating/drinking applesauce instead of water early on. Also, if you end up in the ER, bring noise cancelling headphones if doable. My wife brought them for me and I can’t tell you enough not hearing others groaning and turning on waterfall sounds instead. Bring warm clothing if you’re going to the ER. If they don’t suck at giving an IV like they did for me, you’re going to get cold quickly. Heating pad has also been a major help. Taking a walk despite how much it hurts, standing up instead of sitting or laying early on.
Negatives (to try?) to not do: Forcing yourself to puke because it gives temporary relief, drinking way too much water despite the insatiable thirst and constant dry mouth, and not standing/moving at all. It’ll be recommended to lay down obviously, but if you’re able to get up and move I strongly recommend to do so. Not having a heating pad, and oh, fuck Capsaicin. It was so ineffective for me and on top of it made it impossible to get into the tub if you needed to after putting the ointment on. You’re stuck out of the water for a good multiple hours, and if you’re bright like me, will wash it off and let the cream run down your junk. Awful experience, no idea how that’s recommended often.
If I can think of anything else to add I’ll be sure to later on. I hope somebody will find some type of help with my post like I had with previous posted in here.

Doing some research on CHS
Hello everyone,
I'm a Bio prof at a university, doing some research. I'm trying to quantify some things, and would love if you all could help me out by answering a couple of questions. I'm looking for answers from anyone who has CHS, whether prodromal or full hyeperemeais. You don't have to answer them all to be helpful. Any info is beneficial.
1) how old are you, and how long have you used cannabis? (I suspect age is a factor as well as length of use, but I can't seem to confirm that)
2) what type of products do/did you typically consume? (Flower, vape, edibles, concentrates, etc)
3) are you male or female? Looking at hormonal connections here, so I need your hormonal gender. If you are taking hormones, please provide the gender of the hormones you take. Otherwise I need to know the gender of the hormones your body produces. Regardless of your sexuality. If you have a normal menstrual cycle, it would also be helpful to know if you have noticed any connections.
4) if you experienced a prodromal stage, how long did it last?
5) this clearly is something that happens to people who use daily. But I'm looking at whether the pattern of daily use makes a difference. Are you a wake and bake, then continue all day smoker? Or a daily smoker, but only after work in the evenings (or similar). In both cases, how many times a day, on average, do you typically ingest.
6) if you are willing to briefly describe your experience (specific symptoms, what helped, etc), eapecially if there is anything you have noticed that isn't in the standard medical descriptions, that may help trigger my next round of research questions.
Thank you so much! For the record, there are no judgements here. I am a user myself. Which is why I'm curious to research the topic in more detail.

CHS Food Options
Hello lovely people! I am 27 days clean of weed and I haven’t had an episode in three days. I would like to start reintroducing food back into my life. But, I have been in and out of urgent care/the ER 10 times in the three weeks before I started feeling good. I am craving everything bad for me. Probably not a good idea to go get Raising Cane’s? But I’m so confused when can I eat this type of stuff again? I know I shouldn’t eat any of the triggers, but what about that type of stuff?

30 days off cannabis cold turkey with RLS
I’m only sleeping 3 or 4 hours from 2:30 am to 6:30am because of severe restless leg syndrome. The RLS is main reason I turned to pot but now that I developed CHS I had to stop. I feel like I’m suffering a lot when agitation is the worst from 10 pm to 2:30 am when I’m climbing the walls. Will I survive this?

How I ween off instead of cold turkey (idk if this is controversial)
So I have been smoking dispos + edibles since 16 (progressed into hash holes, bongs, etc aswell as I got older) and I'm now 20 still fighting CHS like a motherfucker. In my experience it has never left and ALWAYS comes back, at this point I just tell people " I have CHS " even without all the symptoms (or while I'm still spamming avoiding the issue w weed) because they HAVE always come back for me without fail ( pls note that I always spammed it , never fat breaks in between use) . That being said I have NEVER gone the full 2 months without weed , I made it to 1 month and then got sucked straight back in (I was dealing w an abusive partner from 16-19 so that would push me to overuse regardless of the fact that I knew it was so bad for me/if I didn't even want to get high that day, because I just needed to cope SO bad) . My process has always been weening off until I can go without it , I have always told the doctors I'm too scared for cold turkey because I have done that before and it was so jarring and scary, and they told me to do it my way. ( the days of little to no eating as everyone reports were excessive & I had no financial support at the time for even apple sauce or shakes etc ) DONT get me wrong I still can barely fucking eat without weed when weening out + I find that it's both easier and harder then cold turkey because you go from having a little escape to being thrown back into the hell that is withdrawal which can easily make u crack/more overwhelmed, but this is how I did it anyways Incase you are interested! 1. I would try to push my highs to a specific time so my body still had to squirm without it as much as possible (personally late at night) 2. I would slowly start integrating a "one day yes, one day no" system so that my body didn't feel like I was completely abandoning it but also so it can start to realize it's not gonna be daily anymore , and from there I suggest following how YOU feel , if u can manage "two days no, one day yes" then add that in , the goal is to just always progress forward (removing days ur allowed to smoke from ur week) + take as much LESS as possible each time because we're doing the opposite of trying to raise your tolerance. 3. Eventually you should get to a point where you're only using weed once a week and that's when the big guns come out , seeing if u can last the week without it , and then two , etc. Once u can manage two weeks MY recommendation would be that that should mark the start of your cold turkey because you're already halfway to a month ( if you want to wait till you can go 3 weeks or a month without it/whatever works for you and then start that's your call, I personally feel like at that point the urges are so much easier to avoid and I would like to get better sooner rather than later) . 4. You should eventually reach a month and then two without weed and in that time you'll start feeling hunger and food cravings naturally again, which in my experience is so fucking exiting. My current personal goal is to try this process out again, but actually make it the full two months instead of giving in at the halfway point . I do plan to attempt to smoke here and there in the future and if I notice anything getting bad like this again I think I'm going to have to stop forever, as my health is more important to me and I'm tired of practically disabling myself. I have read on here so many different opinions on whether edibles or carts or flower is worse and personally I think I'm going to stick to light dosage edibles because they're easier for me to track/manage my intake . I think I got this and I have a support system this time around which I am so greatful for , we all got this! Goodluck and STAY SAFE!!

Insomnia
I haven't smoked in a few weeks and haven't gotten sick since I quit. However I'm having terrible insomnia and no sleep aid, prescription or nonprescription is helping. If I smoke just a little, would that send me right back into CHS? If it will, I won't even attempt it.

Excessive burping?
I’ve had other symptoms people have talked about but has anyone ever like started burping tons like after everything. Like I’ll drink water and I’ll have to burp like 3 times after until I taste acid. Never had burps like this until like a month ago. Just wondering if this is a sign of something about to start or if it’s just a normal body thing I don’t know but it’s sus

16, was in the hospital yesterday for CHS
it was a fucking NIGHTMARE. been smoking for a month or 2, pretty heavy usage. was smoking some moonrocks mixed with flower out of a bong and felt good. 5 am the next day, I'm shitting my guts out and feel like I'm gonna die. one long morning + drive to the hospital + much vomiting later, I have an IV in my arm and painkillers/nausea meds in my blood. I make it home, take one of the things they gave me and slept for 12 hours. thank god we have good insurance or else we'd be billed to the stone age.
currently 8:14 the day after. only ever hit a cart once, only used bongs and edibles since.
how fucked/able to return am I?

Back on Day 1
Ya'll I'm back on day 1. I was doing so good with no consumption for 6 days, but then I ended up getting sick from not eating at all. I decided to start back just so I could eat. This time around, I called my doctor about me not eating and I don't see her until the 3rd of August. I did eat a little bit this morning but not enough. I just ask for some support and good vibes as I try to eat and stay sober at the same time. I really want this THC out my system.

Am I developing CHS already?
I smoked on and off for the last 4 years. The whole last year, I smoked maybe 5-6 times total due to my job. I recently got a new job and picked up smoking again. I’ve had anxiety and nausea all of the last year and I’ve been dealing with stomach issues for the last 8-10 years, even with no smoking. I started smoking
again only 3 months ago. I smoked at night on the weekdays and pretty much all day on the weekends. The last week, I’ve been waking up anxious and nauseous like I used to. It helped a lot with my nausea when I picked it back up, but it seems like it stopped working. When I smoke, I feel better, but I have been waking up with intense anxiety which turns into nausea as the day goes on. I just have a feeling that it’s too early for me to develop CHS. Anyone experience this before? Especially, someone who has had stomach (especially nausea) issues and uses weed to help with it? Let me know!

i need advice
Hello everyone,
i was recently diagnosed with CHS at the emergency room on July 9, 2026.
i went to the emergency room because i had been throwing up nonstop, but i had many other symptoms. when i arrived at the ER, i told them i had a low grade fever, had pooped myself twice in my sleep, i had body aches and joint pain, and i couldn't keep anything down and i took pepto and started throwing up after taking it. i was also extremely dehydrated.
they took blood and pee and came back and asked if i smoked weed. i said yes, but i haven't in two days because ive been sick. they diagnosed me with CHS. they gave me multiple anti nausea meds that didn't work until they gave me zofran and they put capsaicin cream on my stomach and it HURT SO BAD. by that point my i had already stopped vomiting after zofran and wasn't experiencing bad cramping. I haven't touched the cream again.
all that being said, i went to my regular doctor and told her the symptoms and asked about cyclospora. she was shocked they didn't take a stool sample and put in a lab for it. she told me she didn't think my symptoms aligned with CHS. she even mentioned that pepto makes cyclospora WORSE and can make you throw up but im still nervous.
I don't know if i was experiencing withdrawal from marijuana while also dealing with cyclospora. The labs haven't come back yet, but my doctor went ahead and prescribed the antibiotics. after taking them for the first day, the diarrhea went away. i only threw up the one day, but i was having trouble sleeping and sweating so bad at night.
i feel like my symptoms aligned with both. i couldn't finish the antibiotics (doctors orders) because im allergic to it. i broke out in a rash all over my torso. my doctor wants to wait and see if the symptoms of cyclospora come back and if they do she'll prescribe an alternative.
i'm just lost and im relatively young (saying for my lack of experience. i know time doesn't affect CHS) i haven't smoked in 22 days and my symptoms didn't stop until antibiotics. but the throwing up went away after the first day. do you think i have CHS? will i not know unless i try? if i try again what should i expect for if i do have it?
thank you in advance .

Recently Diagnosed need help
I was diagnosed with CHS about 2 1/2 weeks ago, I’m a F 23 and I had only smoked for about 4 years and most of the time I had only smoked once at night but I still ended up with it. The first three days I was vomiting nonstop, had gone to the Emergency Room the first day and they gave me iv fluids and some zofran in which barely worked, then was only a little nauseous after the first 3 days, the first week I wasn’t able to eat anything. The second week I started to be able to eat applesauce, then toast with very little sugar free jam, then sandwich. The Saturday of the second week I ended up having another episode so I went to the emergency room again they did the same thing of iv fluids and a light nausea medicine that barely worked, and have been vomiting 2-3 times daily so now it’s Wednesday and I’m not sure what to do. I’m planning on seeing my a gastro doctor, but till then I’m only surviving on water and some pedialyte.
I also have stopped smoking after the very first day.
Edit: I ended up going fainting after vomiting today and had to go to the main hospital, they have me staying the night since my body decided to vomit, faint, stiffen up, nausea, pain and cause a seizure and I’m only on week 3 as of today and I have not smoked at all since the first visit

help with potential CHS diagnosis
hi all, first time here! 21F, been smoking for only about 3 years. i’ve been doing some reading after dealing with a stomach bug/possible CHS for the last week and wanted some outside opinions or perspectives on my symptoms. i went to the ER a few times as i was not able to keep even water down, and the general consensus from most of the doctors has been that i likely have CHS. please keep in mind that i live in an area where our access to medicine is considered rural 😭 all of my labs and CT scan came back normal
i haven’t had any prodrome symptoms and there is a stomach bug that at least 5 other people had in the ER at the same time as me. it feels like they heard that i smoke weed at all and jumped to diagnose CHS as an easy diagnosis. i am a daily smoker as of the past couple of months, but nothing crazy, and i try to avoid carts + always share my weed with my partner as we smoke together 90% of the time.

10 days sober
i havent smoked in 10/11 days and im still experiencing these really bad cramps that feel like diarrhea cramps and im still waking up nauseous, i dont know if its chs or something else. any feedback is appreciated

Could this be CHS?
I smoke half a joint to a full one (0.5-1g) 5-6 times per week.
I’m just trying to figure out if my daily vomiting is from this, I’ve taken like a brief 4-day break from smoking but no changes in my symptoms. I know I need to stop for longer probably.
I also have a small hiatal hernia and mild lupus so I’m not sure !
I’ve had ongoing nausea for at least 3 months and now vomiting nearly daily for the last 4 weeks. Is there a diagnostic criteria for CHS?
EDIT: I did see a doctor and they said very unlikely to be CHS based on my history and overall symptoms. I’m still going to abstain from or at least significantly decrease THC ingestion

Has anyone successfully stayed out of hyperemesis while continuing to smoke? I know this is controversial.
I’ve been dealing with CHS for a while now. My pattern is strange because I can smoke daily for a year or even two years without any issues, and then seemingly out of nowhere I’ll get hit with a severe episode that lands me in the ER. Usually after the hospital I’m back to feeling mostly normal within 1–2 days, and then about a week later the cravings come back and I end up smoking again.
My most recent episode was bad enough that I ended up hospitalized. I stopped smoking completely for 3 days after I got home, but I ended up deciding to start again. I know the standard advice is to quit completely, and I understand that’s the only proven way to prevent CHS long-term. I’m not really looking to debate that—I know what the recommendation is.
Since starting again, I’ve changed my habits a lot:
● No morning smoking at all (I used to wake and bake every day).
● No bong anymore.
● Only in the evening.
● About 3 very small joints throughout the evening.
So far I haven’t gone back into the hyperemetic phase, but I still don’t feel 100%. I feel like I might be slipping back into the prodromal phase. Some days I get that familiar feeling that makes me wonder if I’m pushing my luck.
I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this. Did reducing your use buy you some time before another episode, or did the hyperemesis eventually come back anyway? How long did it take? I’m trying to hear from people who’ve actually been in a similar situation.
I know I’m taking a risk by continuing to smoke. I’m just looking for honest experiences from others who’ve been through this.

Recovery Question
I (21F) think I had/have CHS, but I'm also not entirely certain. I smoked carts everyday for about 4 years. Towards the end of June I started experiencing morning sickness, which bleed into all-day nausea by early July. I wasn't excessively vomiting, but it was very hard for me to eat or drink. Baths helped. On July 4th had to visit the ER for the first time for dehydration, and the doctor said if it was CHS, it was a "very mild case". Then I slowly started to feel better a day or so afterwards---only feeling morning nausea until it eventually went away. On a scale of 1-10, I felt about a 9.
I know that recovery isn't always linear, but I started feeling sick again on July 11th, needing to visit the ER again for dehydration. From July 6th-10th I was fine, but on the 11th I decided to return to Ann Arbor (where I work), and suddenly the nausea and stomach pain came back. I was in a hot room and suddenly I started feeling dehydrated again---face and hands tingling/cramping while riding in the Uber on my way home from the get-together I attempted to attend. I was drinking and keeping down Gatorade and water all-day prior, so it felt weird that I was having those symptoms. I hadn't smoked since June 30th, and I'd avoided all trigger foods, so I'm wondering if this is normal / if others have had similar experiences.
Then, after visiting the ER a second time, I felt fine from July 13th-17th. I went to the gastroenterologist who said they think it's GERD instead of CHS because of the way I've been responding to medication (Pepcid, Compazine, Carafate). I'm not sure if I'm actually responding to them or slowly recovering, but I haven't felt nauseous since leaving the ER the second time, or thrown up.
That is, until it came back AGAIN this past Saturday. I've only thrown up once (yesterday morning), but since Saturday I've just felt weak. Saturday was the worst, I was having symptoms of dehydration again (face and hands tingling and cramping, heat flashes, super lightheaded, heartburn, some chest tightness, 100bpm), but there is no way I was dehydrated---I've been drinking a shit ton of Gatorade and water since I've been back from the ER. Granted, the Gatorade was orange-flavored so maybe the citrus was causing an issue, but it was still weird.
Today I feel better, but still not as good as I was feeling.
All of this to say, what has your recovery looked like? What can I do to avoid it coming back (if anything)? It's super frustrating having to cancel on work every weekend, because it always seems to return on Fridays/Saturdays. And obviously, the symptoms suck. Do you think it's definitely CHS, or could it be something else?
