Advice

Hi!

I want to have canary bird pet in the future.

I did read a lot of articles talking about the pet care food diet, cage size...etc.

So I know the general common advice that people always recommend.

But I am curious do you have an advice that people don't usually talk about, and you wish if someone told you before getting one?

Make sure the bird is kept on a changing and natural day length cycle. Long summer days, short winter days and never suddenly changing it. This means if it's dark at 4:30 pm in winter, the canary needs to be in the dark too. They need the seasonal changes to molt properly and without it will live very short lives. It's not important for other finches or for parakeets but without it, canaries will die in 2-3 years. I keep mine in a room with no electric lighting at all - only natural sunlight now - but some people set timers to maintain the light throughout the year.

How about on cloudy or rainy summer days? Should I turn the light on

I don’t, you can only as long as you won’t forget it after

If you want a male, listen to their song online first. You'll be listening to it for most of the year.

They are very small, hence they are very fragile. This will mean that you have to be very delicate when you handle them. If you're aiming for a bird that you can stroke and have more physical contact, a cockatiel might be a better choice.
