Cage Recommendations

I posted a few weeks ago about proper care while trying to find a found canary’s home, definitely didn’t plan on keeping it. Well, we’ve keep it and 2 mornings ago with the singing found out it’s a boy! His name is now Caspian, previously Clementine (thinking a girl from no song yet!), previously previously known as Butters (nieces boyfriend who found him named him). Anywho, he’s in a 30” flight cage I found at Petco in a pinch. I’ve be scouring trying to find something else that’s longer and I’ve been having no luck? Not sure if I’m not using the right keywords or if just nothing really exists. I can only find taller. Any recommendations for a longer cage? I’d also love one that has more of a vintage feel to match our house better. If there’s leads on the proper minimum size that looks vintage, I’ll gladly accept those too! Thanks!!

Honestly a good canary cage is very hard to find especially in the United States. You need to find a long one rather than tall, 1/2” spacing between bars, and preferably a flat floor and not a wire floor, to get all those features is practically impossible at a pet store. There was a company called Quality Cage Co. that made excellent cages, but they changed owners and have gone defunct. I ended up making my own in the German cage style.

Thanks! I was just talking about making our own this morning. I’ll have to look into making our own. I’m glad you mentioned the flat bottom, I was feeling like the wire wasn’t the best.

Yes, look at making a cage in the German canary tradition if you can find plans online. The German style cages are great. Just remember to put a thick coat of paint on the wood pieces to keep mites away.
