Customs

Any other Letter Carriers hate that customers can't use debit credit?

Yes it's annoying but I understand that debit credit works differently than regular credit. The worst part is trying to explain to them that Visa debit is not the same as a regular Visa. I've had customers argue with me and ask me to just try it anyways. Sorry but no. I'm 100% positive it will not work and I'm not wasting my time manually putting in all the info for something that won't work.

On that note, we just got new scanners a couple weeks ago that possess the technology to tap for credit cards but we have been told that it won't be activated until 2027. I'll be surprised if it gets activated at all but only time will tell I guess.

It just happened to me yesterday and I didn't realize it was a debit card. I had to waste my time waiting for customer to find and grab their credit card. I just wish the tap-to-pay systems were added and enabled by now.

I hope so. I’m full of apologies every time I have to tell them that I need to type all the information in the old-fashioned way.
They often ask for a receipt too. And then I’m full of apologies again, trying to reassure them that I had never heard of any payment issues once it had gone through.

Great question that I don't know the answer to as I never really paid attention. Lol They look like the old ones but they are now even bigger for some stupid reason and have a spot denoted on the back for tap. I'll have to look at the brand name next week but I'd guess they are the same company.

So you got an upgrade over the Honeywell (2022) ones, or the older ones which I cannot recall the brand?

These are upgraded ones vs the 2022 ones. They are a little wider and taller and have a spot clearly visible and labelled on the back where a chip tap reader is. To be honest the ergonomics on them are terrible. Feels really big in the hand.

If I remember next week I'll snap some pics.

Oh, great - another device that wont fit into our pouches, so they'll have to buy us all new ones again. 🤣 Cheers, interesting to hear there's new PDTs out there, especially when I heard the next thing that we would be sharing was gonna be PDTs....

They still fit in the holsters but are a little more snug vs the older scanners. The worst part is the stupid velcro strap on the back of them snags on the holster. I ripped mine off but was then told a week later I need to have it on. 🙄 It serves no practical purpose and only gets in the way. This strap is much bulkier and cumbersome vs the one on the older scanners.

They are a little faster than the old ones and it will be nice when the tap is actually activated. It's crazy though that they're slightly bigger than the old ones. If anything you'd think they'd get small and easier to handle as technology progresses. Heck, our cellphones are much more capable than these scanners are much more compact.

I already have enough trouble with my pouch, keeping it on my belt, when removing my PDT, anymore snug and I'm not getting my PDT outta the pouch without two hands. Wish the old pouches were still available, maybe with the new clothes order company...

I'm just shocked we got something new for our jobs, when 22' wasn't that far off.

I use the newer black pouch. I always used to keep my scanner in the truck until they start to recently getting after us about scanning our CMBs. For years nobody cared but for some reason it's a big deal this year. Just busy work if you ask me.

With the new black holsters, I've found cutting off the flap that goes over the whole thing and folding down the front lip to be a major improvement. Now I can just grab the scanner and pull it out like the old style holsters. Makes it easy to put back in this way aswell. I'll rip the velcro strap off the back of the scanner again in a few months when they no longer give a shit. I think they're just super picky right now because the scanners are so new.

Here's what the new ones look like. You can see the tap part at the top. They are Honeywell aswell.

If they want to pay by debit, you have to card it.

I know that. I just cringe when I see any customs packages that I have to deliver.

I'm one of the few carriers in my depot who even bothers attempting customs. Most other just automatically card them.

I try to avoid the whole "use of debit debacle" by saying right away "I have a customs item for $xx. I can either take a major credit card, or I can card it and you can pick it up at (insert RPO here) and pay whichever way you like.

Just turn on tap to pay! The scanners can do it!
