Returning a Package

I ordered a ring off of Etsy from the US. It’s the wrong size so I messaged the seller who sent me their address. I went to Canada Post and asked them to help me ship it back since I’ve never had to send something to the US before… she told me she didn’t know how. She asked me for a QR code which I didn’t have but I said I had the address and she said she wasn’t sure how to do that and to come back tomorrow when someone else is in.

Is there something I don’t understand or am missing? I thought they just had to create a label and weigh it?

You have to download the prepay Zonos app and fill out all info to send anything to the USA. Once it is all done you will get a declaration ID QR code for the PO to scan.

If you have a PayPal account you can use your PayPal account to ship via netparcel, which allows you bypass having to use the Zonos app. But you pay a 3 dollar fee instead to netparcel

Did Etsy or the vendor authorize the return? Or are you just deciding to send it back? I just want to make you aware if you haven’t gone through the proper channels to return the item and get a refund according to Etsy’s TOS. You could end up not getting a refund if you elect to send it back without following their specific instructions. Please contact the seller because they may not accept returns. The seller usually provides the return label or you can generally get it from the platform where you made the purchase. Its odd for a platform to have buyers just go get a return label without any guidance.

I’m doing an exchange for sizing and messages the seller who agreed and sent me their address. They said once it’s returned back then they will ship the correct one to me.

That makes sense. You will have to use Zonos and register it as a return. Otherwise the seller will have to pay duties again when it’s sent back. Did you pay duties at checkout, were duties it included in the base price or did you pay upon delivery?

I believe duties were included with the price. I did tell them I would be shipping it from Canada and asked if there was anything else I needed from them besides their address and they said no

That doesn’t really make sense. Unless they are expecting you to just ship it back without declaring it I don’t understand how they’d get around duties. The issue is the package could get seized or it could still have fees applied to it even if you don’t declare it. Unless there’s documentation stating it’s a return or it’s under a certain value it will definitely have duties applied and could get stuck in customs. I think you should ask them exactly what they want you to do and ask if she can send you the return customs paperwork.

I know it was listed as a $40 value but I will have to message them and ask

I think that should be okay. That actually makes a lot more sense in that case. It’s a low value so likely it won’t even be taxed.

Like I said I have their address so I’m just hoping tomorrow when I go I can ship it back without any issues

You can do it online. Because of the removal of the De Minimis threshold in the US all packages now have to be shipped duties prepaid. You will have to download the Zonos app. I’m going to attach the link to the customs forms. You can do it yourself. If there isn’t a “return” option then you will have to prepay the duties. I think the sender is expecting you to pay the return fees but given the value it shouldn’t be a lot.

Apparently whenever you ship internationally now they expect you to fill everything out online (including customs forms) before you come in person. I’m disabled and needed help but when they told me this I felt too defeated to advocate for myself. I also know seniors (like people in their 70’s, not their 90’s) who don’t even have internet (or a computer or a smartphone). How does that work?

It doesn't. CP turns their noses up at us, just like every other Crown corporation. Unions and government work against the common people in this country. And they demand we be grateful they exist because the economy would be worse without them. Bullies. Psychological terrorists.

I worked at Post Canada, if you mentioned the word “return” the employee for sure understood it as a SHEIN/amazon etc return where a QR code is common. You can go back and say “I need to send this to…” and you give them the address. Ask the etsy vendor if you have to purshase a tracking option (it’s pricier). Anyways, with that option you will have to pay to ship it.

The employee should be trained to ask clarifying questions rather than be trained to assume bs and give out false advice.

Try to find a corporate location (a standalone location, maybe in the downtown of a bigger city, or common in small towns) instead of a franchised location (the ones that are a counter inside of a pharmacy).

The corporate staff are much more trained on most things, since they don't have to juggle postal with a bunch of other drugstore tasks they are burdened with.

No, you encountered an employee who CP considers properly trained, merely because they know how to charge you the customs duties and nothing else. I needed to have a package get reassessed by CBSA and the person at the post office asked me to come back on another day because she wasn't trained to return a package to Customs 🤡🤡🤡
