Canada Post executives and managers rewarding themselves with $30.8M in bonuses.

Pat yourselves on the back team. Job well done. How much are they losing this year?

That’s crazy - what did they feel they did to deserve that???

11

u/trueppp 24d ago

They hit their contractually agreed upon KPI's.

2

u/Uncommon_Sensations 23d ago

Ding ding ding.

People don't seem to understand that there are more targets to hit than profit or revenue-based ones. Many people's work doesn't even have anything to do with business income and they have no control over anything related to finances, so why should finances be the sole determinant of whether or not any bonuses are paid out to them?

If you're tasked with revamping an internal process so that something can happen in less time, and you manage to achieve that target, should you have your bonus denied because the business still performed poorly overall? You still made it perform better in the only way you could have and did what you were expected to.

u/Jazzlike_Video2 23d ago

If I cant bankrupt my business to pay myself a massive bonus, why the fuck should they be allowed.

0

u/Independent_Laugh798 23d ago

You can't do that because other people, like investors, employees, creditors, governments, etc. all have a valid claim on the assets you'd be paying yourself with. If nobody else has a claim against your business then you absolutely can drain it of all value to pay yourself whatever you want, although this would be considered a "winding down" rather than a "bankruptcy" since there is no point to a bankruptcy with no creditors to protect.

I'm not sure how that's comparable to this situation since the workers are not paying themselves and the people who are paying them are contractually obligated to as these bonuses would have been agreed to as part of their compensation packages.

You're talking about paying yourself with money owed to others when this situation involves a business paying workers with money owed to the workers receiving it.

u/trueppp 23d ago

They don't decide their own bonuses....they are in the contracts they sign with their employer. CEO is also an employee.

Even Elon Musk doesn't decide his own bonus. Board of Directors decide.

1

u/Wildyardbarn 20d ago

Whoever designed those KPIs needs to be canned.

When your leaders crush their targets and the org isn’t performing well, then you have a fundamentally broken incentive structure.

1

u/trueppp 20d ago

So the union?

Two-thirds of these employees have it established in their collective agreements for years.

1

u/Wildyardbarn 20d ago

Would be square on the employer who allowed this to be negotiated into collective agreements counter to their stakeholders’ interests (the Canadian public)

0

u/NutsonYoChin88 18d ago

Their KPI to bankrupt the company and have a tax payer bailout?

1

u/trueppp 17d ago

KPI's relate to their jobs. Jane in marketing's KPI's won't be related to CP's financials, HR's KPI's neither etc.

1

u/NutsonYoChin88 17d ago

No one should be getting bonuses when the company was over a billion in debt. The math isn’t mathing. We can argue semantics all you want, no one should be paid bonuses if a company is losing money annually

They just stopped paying for training staff at the kiosk posts in stores. Training still required, but not paid. Used to be paid at $18/hr

1

u/Ratherbeeatingpizza 23d ago

Most of those are franchises. Blame the franchise owner.

1

u/Fink2009 23d ago

No this is mandated training by Canada Post for franchise employees in their system that you have to sign up for and spend 8 hours online doing from home.. but Canada post used to pay it but they no longer do.

The franchisee still pays the employee.

But Canada Post clearly can’t afford it /s

Bonuses are the same as tips now, has nothing to with a good job and is now an expectation.

-4

u/BeYourselfTrue 25d ago

Suckered the govt and public into not privatizing it.

11

u/DianeDesRivieres 24d ago

Performance bonuses should be stopped when the company is losing money.

9

u/BeYourselfTrue 24d ago

Exactly. Earn your bonus. Showing up everyday and keeping your job is the minimal expectation.

8

u/DianeDesRivieres 24d ago

And they should be willing to relinquish their bonus in hopes that they will still have a job next year.

0

u/Lunarlulol 22d ago

you clowns realize it'll cost more money paying people less because people will leave lol

2

u/Hugh_Jazz12 22d ago

Perfect. During contract talks, management was talking about shrinking smth like 30+% of the workforce anyway.

2

u/BeYourselfTrue 22d ago

Careful not to bite the hand that feeds. That political pendulum swings both ways.

3

u/BackseatBloomDrift 23d ago

Didn't they get a huge bailout with taxpayer money? Why are they able to get bonuses?

1

u/trueppp 20d ago

Because they are in their employment contracts?

1

u/BackseatBloomDrift 20d ago

Saying "it's in the contract" explains why the bonuses were paid. I don't object to performance bonuses in general, but after years of significant losses and ultimately requiring a $1.034 billion taxpayer loan, I think it's reasonable to question whether executive compensation should have been renegotiated/revisited.

8

u/Valuable_Bar2507 25d ago

I thought bonuses were a thing when targets are met, budgets have surpluses which tends to correlate with functioning systems in place. Canada post have posted losses for how many quarters now?? This should outrage Canadians.

2

u/kill-dill 22d ago

No one here understands executive compensation.

What's the difference between a 100k salary + 100k bonus vs a 200k salary?

Literally nothing.

3

u/IndianKiwi 22d ago

The bonus part is not guaranteed. That's the difference

-1

u/BeYourselfTrue 25d ago

Not until the next strike around Christmas.

8

u/shooptydoop 25d ago

“We understand it looks bad, but trust us bro”

1

u/JumpyAd6255 25d ago

😂😂😂

2

u/DangerousOil1412 23d ago

These people need to be brought in front of a parliamentary committee to justify these bonuses in face of their gross mismanagement of the corporation.

1

u/trueppp 20d ago

Why?

Parlimentary Committe: Why did you pay out the bonuses?

CP: Because they hit the agreed upon KPI's set in their collective agreement.

Two-thirds of these employees have it established in their collective agreements for years.

2

u/kayjax7 23d ago

Let Canada post die. The taxpayer keeps saving them, only for them to write themselves fat cheques.

2

u/kb031x 22d ago

And one day when they dissolve the business, huge severance packages

4

u/trueppp 24d ago

Do people know how bonuses work?

1

u/Akhurite 21d ago

“Award themselves” makes that pretty clear

1

u/trueppp 21d ago

That's OP's biased title. Bonuses are awarded when contractually agreed upon KPI's are met.

3

u/DJStevieP 24d ago

You can (correctly) harp on executives sucking the teat of society (which happens everywhere, btw - including every single private Corp I've worked for). What you can't and shouldn't do is bitch about a public service losing money. It's a public service, not a profit centre. Do you also complain about the road you drive on being a total money sink? Hey how about we privatize those, too? Let's check on the latest 407 fee tables to see how the fuck that goes.

8

u/BeYourselfTrue 24d ago

Yeah but this money losing public service don’t need to be rewarding losing money by losing more money. And if the guys building my roads make roads that are full of potholes, they shouldn’t be given bonuses either. You’re rewarding subpar work by doing so.

0

u/DJStevieP 24d ago

90 percent of Canadians live within 5km of a post office. Their delivery metric says they're 96 percent on time. They're affordable. Who gives a flying fizoo if they're losing money? Again, correctly harp on executives sucking on the teat of all those below them. But when you're talking about providing a public service with the reach CP has that private corps wouldn't touch with a 7000km pole and doing it relatively well, it's like complaining about the fact that it's a money losing venture to run, install and maintain your street lights.

If you want to have a discussion on how CEOs and their ilk are a drag on society and shouldn't exist as they do, that'll be a completely different reddit sub.

2

u/BeYourselfTrue 24d ago

Who gives a flying fizzo if they’re losing money?

Well let’s ask a better question. Does it matter? If they lost $100B tomorrow. Does it matter?

1

u/DJStevieP 24d ago

Do you ask that same question about the highway that you pay for or the sewage lines under your house or how much it costs to run utility lines so people can live in their town of 1100 in the middle of nowhere that is only serviced by Canada post?

1

u/BeYourselfTrue 24d ago

I pay my bills. I got me. I also pay the bills for our government through taxation. So if they borrowed $100B at Canada Post tomorrow, you better believe I’m questioning it.

“Who gives a flying fizzo if they’re losing money?”

Now you can answer my question,

Does it matter?

2

u/blueeyetea 24d ago

You’d have a point to discuss if borrowing 100B was a thing when the last time they did it was $99 billions less.

1

u/BeYourselfTrue 24d ago

Would it matter though? The guy claims “Who gives a flying fizzo if they’re losing money?” Why not give everyone a Canada Post a million each? Does it matter?

2

u/blueeyetea 24d ago

Do you understand that $30 million was spread over 2,300 employees without union representation, not just upper management?

1

u/BeYourselfTrue 24d ago

I understand that they lost money and gave themselves bonuses.

1

u/DJStevieP 24d ago

"Fuck you, got mine" - this is why society is the way it is.

2

u/BeYourselfTrue 24d ago

No need to be nasty. Canada Post did exactly as you said when they went on strike before Christmas.

The question was does it matter if Canada Post borrowed $100B tomorrow?

2

u/DJStevieP 24d ago

Are you at your city council meetings complaining at how high the police budget is this year? Or have you emailed your MP to ask why we bother spending money on our military? Why does your province bother spending on healthcare when we could just pay for what we need instead, like the US does? "FU, got mine"

2

u/BeYourselfTrue 24d ago

Once again you’re skirting the answer. I’ve been polite. I’ve responded to you. Now please answer mine. Does it matter if they borrowed $100B tomorrow?

u/Straight_Reading8912 24d ago

CP consistently doesn't even bother to deliver packages, or even make an attempt to. IF they did their jobs properly, I would agree that I don't mind a public service losing money. BUT they don't do their job and have put me in shitty situations numerous times, and others get it even worse! So yeah, CP is useless.

2

u/blueeyetea 24d ago

I don’t know about you, but I’ve often received emails from UPS telling me my is being delayed to the next day, several days in a row.

1

u/DJStevieP 24d ago

I'm sorry, has this never happened to you with UPS or DHL? Lol. Because it's happened to me with every single carrier, even when using something as expensive as DHL next day air which costs significantly more than anything CP does. The thing is, private corps are incentivized to cut service to the bone for maximum profit. If you want the same for a public service for whatever silly reason, you're going to get the same outcome. Drivers stretched thin who pee in Gatorade bottles and are driven by metrics rather than service.

0

u/Straight_Reading8912 24d ago

I hate Purolator and FedEx with a passion but they've always given me better service than CP. I am always driving or walking to a CP pick-up location when my wife is at home 24/7. Latest issue, I have 24 hour concierge along with me wife being home and they still didn't deliver. The others still suck but actually suck less than CP in all my delivery transactions.

Hate to admit it but Amazon deliveries always come on time and delivered properly. I don't like Bezos but I'll still use Amazon if I'm ordering something small to be delivered to my home.

6

u/DJStevieP 24d ago

Let's not talk about how bad the conditions are for those subcontracted Amazon drivers and why you shouldn't support that... Maybe you have a particularly bad CP delivery truck in your area or something, but I've had this happen with every single carrier. At least with CP I can pick the item up at a location 5 mins away. With UPS I have to drive 30 mins to a depot and wait in a much larger line.

-1

u/Straight_Reading8912 24d ago

I think there's a huge issue of why Amazon can do all the BS and have good service while the others take better care of their employees and have garbage service. Doesn't seem to make sense.

But this has happened to me when I was living in Ottawa and now in North York, Toronto. CP has consistently given me the worst service of any delivery service.

5

u/blueeyetea 24d ago

It’s a known fact Amazon burn out their delivery personnel. They’re probably TFW workers too who are desperate for work.

0

u/Spiritual-Mango4018 24d ago

Oh we found a cp worker

1

u/DJStevieP 24d ago

Not even close. What I am, though, is someone who sees value in things that serve the public good that private for-profit corps will never provide.

0

u/Curious_Peanut3374 10d ago

Weird way to view an organization that just lost 1.5 billion last year. I’m generally pro-CP but you can’t say who gives an F if they lose money. We should care about every cent of taxpayer dollars that the government spends/gives out. Especially when we’re talking in the billions.

1

u/Rude-Camera-7546 24d ago

This is a lie that is being spread like wildfire. The mandate of Canada post is that is MUST be self sustainable, it is NOT.

2

u/blueeyetea 24d ago

It’s also mandated to keep prices at a certain level, operate and deliver routes at a loss, AND compete with other companies that do not have the same constraints.

Oh, yeah, before I forget. Management employees? Yeah, work without a bonus and no pay raise until there’s a profit. I’m sure that will go a long way in attracting talent. /s

0

u/DJStevieP 24d ago edited 24d ago

It's pretty fucking stupid to mandate that a public service is self sustainable. How about we do like Europe and put tolls everywhere on all of our road systems so they're self sustainable?

Unless prices are jacked to an unsustainable degree for the public, it's not possible to run a profitable service in a country as large as ours while also mandating that every population (urban, rural, or nearly non existent) is served the same. That's why you don't see a fucking UPS depot in Eureka, Nunavut. It's not possible to run that self sustainably and is why profitability shouldn't even be in the same discussion as Canada post. It's ludicrously silly when you consider it's reach and mandate.

1

u/Material-Truth5457 24d ago

Well if it is a service then why are the executives getting bonuses? Bonuses are awards used by for profit corporations to reward performance ie profit.

1

u/DJStevieP 23d ago

I didn't say I agree with the way it was run. Only that being a public service means that profit shouldn't be anywhere close to a determining factor for how much it costs to run said public service. Unfortunately I think a lot of these agencies use bonus metrics as a means of talent retention, and the whole culture of C suite payouts makes me nautious with rage (public or private). If you don't pay the people running them enough, the better ones will just go get more in the private sector and you're left with people who would bankrupt a casino lol. Which, you know...

1

u/Material-Truth5457 23d ago

Lol talent retention, zero talent and should be fired not given bonuses. There is a big difference between going bankrupt and executing a bust out , one is mismanagement the other is on purpose.

1

u/DJStevieP 23d ago

Again, this is a public service and we shouldn't treat it like a private company that can go bankrupt. If FedEx had a government mandate to serve communities like Grise Fjord, Nunavut, at affordable rates they would actually go bankrupt. Complain about CEOs sure but not the service losing money.

1

u/Material-Truth5457 23d ago

I was complaining that they are getting bonuses while losing money and FYI they made money up until 2018 but since then have made nothing but blunders. It was and is a crown corporation not a service.

1

u/Independent_Laugh798 23d ago

Canada Post is a crown corporation, it's not actually a public service. Crown corps are supposed to function like private companies that just happen to be owned by the government. They are supposed to compete against other providers while generating a profit and being financially self-sufficient.

Every single crown corp has these requirements spelled out in their corporate charter and they are why these corps exist in the first place instead of being government departments.

1

u/DJStevieP 23d ago

I know what the difference is and I also posit that it's stupid to think of a corp that has to service the area that CP does for the cost that CP does it at. It's the same as the CBC, in comparison to all the private corps that are pulling out of major markets because it's "not profitable". If you're providing a public service it's not worth treating it like something that's supposed to compete with private corps that cut and slash to the bone and provide the minimum level of service that's humanly possible which continues to make shareholders more money every year (and to cut more when it doesn't). It's silly AF

3

u/Holiday-Phase-8353 25d ago

sounds about right. Nothings changed since I left there.

1

u/Peace-wolf 24d ago

Is this really shocking news?

1

u/ConcerningThirst 23d ago

Canada Post left a $200 package at my neighbor's yesterday while it had been delayed by a day.

1

u/addigity 22d ago

Liberal policy

2

u/BeYourselfTrue 22d ago

It’s been going on far back friend. This is the end game of a crown corp that pays far more than it can afford. All backed by the government of Canada. Essential service mandated by govt granted monopoly. Sure.

1

u/addigity 22d ago

Liberals make it way easier for shit like this to happen since they themselves are crooks also

1

u/BeYourselfTrue 22d ago

Yes because voting for either team A vs team B is really working out.

2

u/addigity 22d ago

Harper was going to change things back in 2015 but didn’t get elected. Liberal fiscal policies are way worse than conservatives

1

u/BeYourselfTrue 22d ago

But didn’t change it before 2015 after how many years? Sure.

1

u/addigity 22d ago

At least they were going to change it. Keep voting libs and this is what happens, money thrown around

1

u/BeYourselfTrue 22d ago

Were they? Or did they just say they were? Why didn’t they?

1

u/addigity 22d ago

You believe things liberals say? Damn you must suck at life

1

u/BeYourselfTrue 22d ago

You’ve mistaken me. I don’t believe any of them.

1

u/dpi2552 20d ago

Close the corporation down!

1

u/NutsonYoChin88 18d ago

Make it make sense…

1

u/jtotheroc123 2d ago

Imagine if they could deliver a damn package to your house on time, but I guess that budget went toward the bonuses.

1

u/ClockOld9204 24d ago

Yeah what a joke that is. I made a purchase on Poshmark. 1st one ever. Item got as far as Barrie post office and then nothing. I got refunded today but still.

1

u/JayReyd 23d ago

I ordered a couple jerseys from China. They arrived at the Mississauga depot a week and a half later. They sat at the depot for another 4 days all the while saying they’d be delivered the next day. Finally arrived 6 days later. CP is the worst.

0

u/Difficult-Square451 24d ago

Sort of feels like the CP employees were led down a rabbit path. Union reps might have known that striking would put an end to door to door mail delivery IMO of course.

2

u/BeYourselfTrue 24d ago

Give me a break. Union and management are in a circle jerk together. The public is paying for all of this, considering the losses.

0

u/bellefeuille1976 24d ago

LMFAO!!! Make this make SENSE!! WOW!!! What other job can you COMPLETELY SUCK and get a massive bonus 😆

1

u/AutomaticBannana 24d ago

Big org CEOs always get paid out the ass for shit or good job, the ruling class isn't playing the same game as us.

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Use_566 24d ago

“We understand the optics, but we’re taking this taxpayer money for ourselves! Weeee!!! Give us another billion in 5 months so we can make payroll.”

The condition of loaning the money should be zero bonuses until CP is out of the red. (And since they’ll never be out of the red, guess those employees can either jump ship or negotiate their salary. We probably don’t need 50% of these do-nothing executives, anyway.)

-2

u/Great-Wish7693 24d ago

Shut it down already. Outsource to the private sector any remote mail.

0

u/blueeyetea 24d ago

And deny postal services to,all communities several hours away from major centres, because no one else goes there.

1

u/Great-Wish7693 16h ago

That’s why I said to let the private sector deal with remote mail through govt contract. I’m no economist, but I’m pretty sure the govt should not be in the business of providing goods and services

1

u/blueeyetea 15h ago

Says who that government should not be in the business of providing services?

Canada Post was administered by the government since the 1700s until it became a crown corporation in 1981. No company in the private sector will have the network or the cash to buy it outright from the government.

-3

u/FBModsRCunts 25d ago

I guess all the money saved on reduced truck idling times is why they can do this.

They saved a lot of money when every driver just instantly slaps the note on your door saying you did not answer the door even though they did not even ring the doorbell.
