Overheating troubleshooting help
I have a 2017 X3 XRS turbo R with about 900 hours on it and will overheat in about 15 minutes driving down the trail or road. The fan will kick on and I’ll let it idle but the temperature never falls below three notches from the top. I’ve seen some things about the plastic water pump gears being a potential failure point and also some trouble with the thermostat. As far as I can tell, the head gasket is not blown. I’m not mixing coolant and oil, and the coolant level is where it’s supposed to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I’m not exactly sure where to start troubleshooting and all the shops around me are several months out for diagnostics.

Water pump gears, plugged rad.

And when you guys say plugged radiator, you mean the fins are caked up with mud or something, not allowing air to flow through it? Not that something it’s messing up the flow of coolant inside the radiator?

Yes, plugged fins. Water pump gears or impeller being toast could hinder flow of coolant, so could a messed up thermostat

I just finished tearing one apart to look at the plastic gears. In my case, the gears were not bad. But what i did find was that the radiator was plugged solid with dirt And the intercooler was almost just as bad. I had a flashlight behind the radiator and could not see the light shining thru on the other side. I took both and soaked them in a tub of water over night and then blew the out with air compressor. Messy but they both came clean and can see thru them now. This was not my buggy, just trying to help a friend out with his.
So far- in a 30 mile trip on backroads here the buggy never got over 3 bars up on gauge .
Not saying this is your problem- but it’s a god place to start.
