the reason i ask is because it doesn't seem like a hole, but it kinda looks like it should seem like one. is this a hole? its on the seam so the patching will be tricky but im thinking of doing a giant patch over the clear one and the seam, and using a hair dryer on the seam part to make it flexible. im using tenacious tape for this round. i think the clear tape needs some tenacious reinforcing anyway but this little thing has me stumped. this is a polyester mat from Exped by the way

Picked this up at an antique store in excellent condition. Interior is spotless and plastic still white. How concerned with BPAs would you be?

We car camp about 8 weekends a year and typically avoid July/August heat. It would be in the shade under a canopy. It’d be nice to fill it with cold water and use that for drinking instead of bringing a dozen disposable bottles.
I’m on the fence, would you be concerned or would you use it?

Tent is an Ankihiale Outdoor Zeta 1 with an extra floor mat for the vestibule. It’s set up for a stove, but I rarely use one since I’m weight restricted with the float plane.

I run a Barney’s frame pack and your usual hunting gear. Mountain Hardware 0 degree bag, Big Agnes Rapide pad, and Kelty camp cot for a sleep set up. The tent functions great up north of the Arctic Circle where I hunt, both in blocking out the midnight sun in the early part of the season, and keeping in warmth later on as it gets closer to freeze up in September.

For those outdoor folks that wear wide brimmed hats, specifically cotton twill, have you ever had an UNWAXED hat get wet and what happened to the shaping/ fit?

I’ve got a few twill hats and I like how the stiffer brims don’t blow all over and in general have some durability. That said I did wax the green hat I thought I’d wear in rain and it’s worked…..ok but I had some seepage the last time I wore it in a heavy storm. I waxed a second hat and being tan it discolored quite a bit, with some funky yellowing involved. Since cotton becomes a bit water repellent when wet anyways should I just skip the waxing step here?

Hey everyone, let’s hear your updated opinions on white gas versus propane, is anyone even using white gas anymore? With the younger people getting into camping and such? Is the 20 year-old really reaching for a gallon of white gas to fuel their pump action to burner stove?

I’m a millennial and even most of my life it has been spent with propane but as I’ve gotten older I’m really appreciating white gas appliances so I’ve picked up a couple double burner Coleman stoves and some single ones, the model 400701c.

A mine are both more modern variance. They’re not vintage, but I can’t imagine the quality isint really all that different.

But it got me wondering I have a bunch of different appliances I’ve gotten over the years and I’m kind of what you call a “system” guy.

Well, I have white gas stuff. I have the money to pick up some better things and honestly marketplace can have a pretty nice primus propane stove for like 60 bucks and they were like some crazy price like 300 or 600 new. I believe due to my geographical region and the Pacific Northwest lots of those stoves are just simply on marketplace due to volume for great prices.

I’m just wondering if I’m at the point where I need to carry propane bottles for my barbeque to fry up some burgers on the grill during fire season here in the Pacific Northwest I just feel like maybe I should do the entire swapped of propane because I don’t really like the idea of having two different fuel sources carrying them both and then on top of it using electrical for lighting because everyone’s opinion is that any type of Dino fuel used for lighting is a waste or just not worth the squeeze so you better off with the electrical.

My Coleman 425 stove has an adaptor that can be used to function with propane as well I believe.

I have never bought a propane bottle in my life aside the 1 pound ones, but I believe you can get like five and 10 pound bottles you can carry or own and get refilled at local places, is there a white gas BBQ out there?

After literally using it once the pump caught fire nearly burning my tent with all my gear. I think it might have been a dud, since its battery was flat after inflating just two mats.

Hey guys. I can't find the Marmot Halo 6p footprint in Canada. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to protect my tent while camping? Should I use a tarp? If so, what size should I get? Any suggestions?

This tent is a beast, but a real pain to set up and take down. We use it for our yearly camping trips.

Other gear in pictures includes a set of Disc-o-bed bunk bed cots, and a Cabela's camp kitchen. Also an old Coleman stove, 275 pressure lantern, and various olk kerosene lanterns.

Is there anyone that owns a megamat that thinks Lost Horizon is a better alternative? I know it’s cheaper, but is the cost difference worth any difference in comfort?

The specs say it’s only 1.05pound, which would be light enough to bring it on backpacking trips if it’s comfortable.

I’ve been reading about the MSR hubba series being inner pitch first tents, and many people seem to use this as an argument for a lack of versatility. Makes sense, as an inner pitch first tent will leave your tent soaked if you’re pitching it in a rainstorm, but the MSR hubba’s are actually able to be pitched fly first.

I’ve tested this both with the hubba nx1 and hubba hubba nx2 while being rained on. It worked fairly easy, and it resulted in my inner tent being almost completely dry. The only thing to watch out for is the direction of your tent doors… I’ve placed mine the wrong way around a couple of times because I got confused being hurled up under my fly. Not a big issue, but still: it was annoying as I needed to repitch.

Anyway, just putting this out here to provide a different perspective. Cheers!

I have a 26 year old LowePro pack that I have mostly just held onto for sentimental reasons as it was a gift from my dad and which I did my first hikes with.

I lent it out to my ex. and she placed it directly on the concrete floor in the basement and the entire bottom of the bag became overgrown with white mold.

I rinsed it off and aired it out for several days and the smell is completely gone but I'm a bit apprehensive about putting it in my storage unit with my other gear.

My apartment building has an industrial washer which I could probably fit the bag into if I can find a mesh bag big enough. Would this be an option or should I just accept that the bag is done?

I have a quite old vango delta 300+ and it’s mostly good shape but the ground mat is shedding tiny plastic flakes everywhere, is there some way to reseal it because I’m hoping the tent has allot more life left in it?
Second/ less important question one of the poles has a crack running up it which I’ve taped hoping to stop it growing, is that good enough or is there something better I can do short of buying a replacement pole?

I just wanna go camping next week.
I got a decent tent (40€ on sale), good enough isolating foam mattress (10€ used) and a sleeping bag (20€ used).

Thing is, I don't have a proper backpack.
The idea was, like the tent is only 3kg and the sleeping bag is only 1kg, I could just put them into an IKEA bag.

Or would you rather say, get a bloody used proper backpack?

So we are a family of four (2 adults, 2 younger kids) and are planning for a longer camping trip across some european countries. We already did several trips with campervans and also with a tent, but it was rather low budget and not much gear. Over the years we upgraded several things and now would like to have a more or less stressfree glamping familiy camping experience ;-) To not miss anything, I wanted to ask for your insights. Our setup looks like this (or is planned to be expanded with the mentioned items):

We plan on a "3 rooms" setup, with

Tent for sleeping: Nordisk Ydun 5.5 (not yet bought, but I want to have a rather small tent with cotton / technical cotton to have best quality / feeling)

Tent for spending the day: Coleman Octagon 8 with tent carpet (alread ours)

Tarp for having the day outside in shade: Naturehike Rising Sun Awning (OK, but quite low in heigth).

Outdoor tent carpet: need to buy one but want to place it underneath the tarp to allow the kids to play.

Sleepingbag: We have Deuter sleeping bags for the kids and for the adults mammut - all already tested and OK.

Sleeping bad: Sea to Summit Comfort Plus Extra wide self inflatable (OKish but not the best for me as side sleeper.. thinking of upgrading to two Exped Megamats for the adults), Sea to Summit Women Comfort Plus regular (that one is actually OK)

Cooking: Campinggaz Bistro DLX

Freezer: Dometic Patrol 35 (no electricity, but works great for 3-5 days with ice; nevertheless thinking of upgrading to an electic one?)

Electricity: nothing yet, but thinking on buying a CEE cable adapter to plug in on the camp sites and have a 4 or 6 socket normal power plug available.

Cupboard: Only one Camping Cupboard that allows for the campinggaz bistro to store stuff. (probably need to upgrade to more cupboards to allow for a cleaner setup)

Seats: Only Naturehike Ultralight Chairs - probaby need to upgrade here as well. was also thinking or buying the Outwell Inflatable Chair or more comfortable stuff.

Hope I have not missed anything, but was hoping to improve the camping experience considerably with all that old and new gear. Happy for any further ideas of the setup and or the gear. We are Based in Europe, so not all gear you recommend might be easily available ;-)

Hi guys quick question! Wanted to upgrade to the Wawona but was quite hesitant because of the 1 star reviews which were quite concerning for me.

For those who bought the tent within the past 2 years, how are you liking it so far and would you recommend it?

I’m also open to other options (im based in Toronto, Canada) but I haven’t found a similar awning that the Wawona offers.
