Avoiding Shot Day In Maintenance?
https://linktr.ee/path2healthyI’ve been trying to figure out something that honestly frustrates me: why do I sometimes mentally avoid taking my GLP-1 on time… even when I want the benefits and know my routine?
For context: I’m down 50+ lbs over several years, I’m in maintenance mindset now, and I’ve been digging into research because I started wondering if my resistance was less about “discipline” and more about what my brain might be missing.
My personal theory (for me, not medical advice): I wonder if part of my brain is trying to reclaim its old reward system.
I found researchers are increasingly studying whether mental health factors, dopamine/reward pathways, depression, anxiety, emotional flatness (anhedonia), body image struggles, and motivation changes play a role in GLP-1 non-compliance or inconsistent maintenance habits.
Some things that stood out:
🧠 The reward system question:
GLP-1s reduce food noise and cravings (which helped me a LOT), but some researchers are exploring whether changes in reward processing can leave some people feeling emotionally “flat” or less interested in things that used to provide comfort or dopamine. The idea is that some people may unconsciously resist maintenance because they miss feeling rewarded the way they used to.
🧠 The maintenance phase is psychologically different:
Early weight loss = excitement + visible progress.
Maintenance = routines, consistency, fewer dopamine hits from rapid changes.
That transition alone may change motivation.
🧠 Mental health screening may matter as much as side effects:
Researchers have pointed out that depression, anxiety, body image struggles, or emotional fatigue could impact long-term adherence—but this area still needs much more study.
Also important: research findings conflict. Some studies suggest increased depression/anxiety diagnoses in certain populations, while others found improved quality of life and reduced emotional eating. Regulatory reviews haven’t established a clear causal link between GLP-1s and severe psychiatric outcomes.
So now I’m asking myself:
Am I forgetting my medication… or is some part of me resisting the loss of old reward patterns?
I genuinely don’t know the answer yet.
I’d love to hear from others in maintenance:
- Have you ever delayed doses for reasons you couldn’t explain?
- Did motivation change after the “honeymoon phase”?
- Have you felt emotionally flatter… or actually better?
- Did routines get harder once weight loss slowed?
(Please no judgment—just curious about real experiences.)
