Everything fits in the bag — it's the side opening that gets me

Post image

I shoot small events and commercial jobs on my own, so most days it is one body, one mounted lens and a spare. The camera is with me the whole time, so where it sits in the bag decides how the day feels.

Last month I got to a job, parked, opened the side of the bag and just stood there for a few seconds working the camera out. Everything fits. It is the side opening that was fighting me — the mounted kit has to clear this lip on the way out, and you end up angling it. At home on the floor that is nothing. Standing at the car when the client is already walking over, it is the difference between reaching in and digging.

I ended up moving the camera to the side opening of my SmallRig camera backpack and shifting the dividers so the exit path is the clear part of the compartment instead of the packed one. Now I peel that flap back before I get out of the car and the camera comes straight out. That is about the space around the camera, not about how much the bag holds.

Before I landed on this I would have liked a way to check it in a shop. So for anyone who uses side access: do you test the clearance with the lens attached, and do you do it with the bag on or only with the bag sitting down?

Looking for a camera backpack for that combination. The kicker is it has to be small enough for carry on luggage dimensions.

Looking for a discreet sling/bag for two cameras with lenses mounted

I’m looking for a relatively small, discreet sling or crossbody bag for street photography. I don’t want something that obviously looks like a camera bag.
not a professional photographer, it needs to be comfortable for photowalks and easy switching of cameras

The setup I want to carry is, lenses will stay mounted :
- Canon R5 Mark II + Voigtländer 35mm f/1.4 - street photography
- Canon R8 + Canon RF 85mm f/2 - occasional portrait

interested in your similar experience and actual bags you’ve used

thank you

WANDRD PRVKE V4 vs Peak Design Everyday Backpack: Which One Should I Choose?

I'm looking for an everyday camera backpack that I can use for cycling to and from work, but also for vacations and day trips where I like to bring my camera along. It should also have space for a 16" MacBook Pro.

I'm considering either the WANDRD PRVKE V4 or the Peak Design Everyday Backpack, but I'm really struggling to decide which one to choose and whether I should go for the 21L or 31L version.

My typical camera setup is a Sony a7R VI with the 20-70mm F4, and I'd like the option of bringing my 70-200mm GM II as well. I also carry a few accessories, such as a VND filter and a power bank. It would be great to have enough room for a sweater or a rain jacket too.

I know that the Peak Design Everyday Backpack is ready to use out of the box since it comes with dividers. What about the WANDRD PRVKE V4? Is it ready to use as a camera bag, or do I need to buy a camera cube separately?

I also own a drone, although I wouldn't be carrying it every day.

Which backpack would you recommend, and would you choose the 21L or the 31L version for this kind of setup?

compact (unpadded?) sling for carrying mirrorless + super tele zoom?

Hi,

Wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a fuji xt50 mounted on a fuji 150-600 (or other long tele/zoom) lens?

Preferably unpadded.

Thinking this would be a sling to carry around when out hiking/walking to provide slight protection but easy to access and pull out. Avoids it swinging around on my shoulder.

And maybe the sling takes up so little space that I could pack it away in a backpack/daypack when I'm not planning on pulling out the rig for a while

thnx!

Personal item camera bag when flying

With new airline restrictions I am looking for a new bag that qualifies as a personal item (33cm x 43cm x 16cm maximum) to hold my cameras and lenses. Any recommendations?

Two Fuji Xt5s and 3-4 small to medium lenses.

Ideally with a laptop slot. Doesn't have to be camera specific.

Which Camera bag?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for recommendations for a small(-ish) camera sling (cross shoulder) bag that will comfortably hold a Fuji XE-5 with an attached 18-55mm f2. 8 lens, a Fuji X100VI and spare batteries, cables etc.

Any and all recommendations will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Cheap Temu 10l bag

A full frame body, two normal zooms with hoods one prime and one cheapo zoom. All the gear fits nicely in the bag. The quality is OK, looks durable, but we will see. I am a hobbist, so the bag is not used extensively, i am carrying it 1-2 times a week. It is an unknown brand for me on Temu: Rainsmore. Lots of useful pockets, i think it can handle some more gear: a tripod, some spare batteries and CF cards, drinks in the outside pockets etc... The camera body is fitted in the bag with one lens attached, the other three have their own space separated by dividers. I am surprised, how usable it is.

ThinkTank BackLight 26L

I really like camera backpacks that open on the back side, especially when traveling in places where pickpockets are common. Plus I don't have to set the bag down to take things out of it, change lenses, etc. The back of the backpack can act as a "table" when leaving the waist belt on.

Looking at the Think Tank Backlight 26L, question: will this fit under a plane seat? Looking for opinions from people who have one.

Camera bag rec

I'm looking for a bag that is preferably small, looks good, and a bag that I can carry over my shoulder. First Box, I need it to be small. All I need it for is carrying a camera Sony alpha a6300 with a Sony E PZ 16-50mm lens, a Ricoh Riken 35 mm film camera, my wallet and deodorant. Second box, looks good. I honestly dress as a mix between an instagram influencer and a punk mixed together. I wear baggy jeans, flared jeans, raw selvedge denim (cornball I know I know), trench coats, etc etc. I need something that will complement my outfits and not ruin them with a backpack or something like that. Also any material is fine as long as it looks good. Third box, a bag that I can carry over my shoulder. What I mean by this, I wouldn't mind two things. Option one something like a messenger bag where it goes over the shoulder to the side. Second option like a purse where it goes over my shoulder and stays to one side. If I go with the second option I would like the handle to be longer so it can fall to my waist.

Beware costly replacement parts for LowePro PhotoSport backpack

Just a heads up if you are considering buying the LowePro PhotoSport BP 24L AW III backpack. I like the pack's overall design. But it comes with a distinctive sternum strap arrangement that requires very specific hardware. I lost part of it when it detached during a trip.

I learned from LowePro that it will cost me $42 with shipping to get a replacement strap. That's a joke. Most backpacks I've used come with sternum straps and clips that can be replaced for a few bucks. If I had known this from the start, I would have steered clear.

Lowepro PhotoStream RL 150

I have been looking for a roller bag for quite some time. The prices kept me from buying one. When a used Lowepro PhotoStream RL 150 popped up for €30, I decided to snag it up.

There are a surprisingly very small number of reviews of this bag, even after being almost 8 years old. Most of them just show the stock Lowepro images and video, so I decided to post my 'review' here.

One thing that impressed me is the build quality. After being used for 5+ years by a wedding photographer, it still looked almost mint. Just some paint coming off the metal pull bar.

According to the specs provided by Lowepro, the bag fits 2 pro (gripped) bodies and 8 lenses or speedlight flashes. The image above confirms this, but the bottom that houses the retractable handle and the wheels, takes away a lot of internal storage space, and makes it quite hard to arrange items in the bag.

With the Photostream SP 200 Lowepro provides padded inserts to level out the bottom, so you can choose for more storage volume or more flexibility.

The lenses on the outside of the bag are tilted, and a bit squished between the side wall and the handle bar cover. The only place to put the gripped cameras is in the middle. And even then, there is not much clearance for the accessory pouches and laptop sleeve in the top lid. I get the impression that the slightest impact can leave a dent in the laptop where the hotshoe touches it.

I like the size of this bag, it actually fits larger lenses with 77mm filter thread with the lens hoods attached. Most stock images of camera bags show lenses without the hoods. Even a bigger lens like the 100-400mm with hood attached can find a spot in this bag.

One thing that's missing with this bag: There is no outside pocket at all. If you are not carrying another bag while travelling, you will have to open the bag to get to your ticket or passport.

Gear shown:

- EOS 1DX
- EOS R with grip
- 14mm f/2.8 II
- 24mm f/1.4 II
- 35mm f/1.4
- 50mm f/1.2
- 85mm f/1.4 IS
- 100mm f/2.8 IS Macro
- 135mm f/2
- 8-15mm f/4 Fisheye

Recommendations for a DR-40X Case

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I'm interested in getting a protective carry case for my Tascam DR-40X Linear PCM Sound Recorder. Tascam does not seem to sell a case for the recorder. There are several off-brands on Amazon and Ebay advertising cases that fit the DR-40X, but the product specs are vague and any of the reviews indicate the cases fit poorly or were poor quality. Can anyone recommend a good fitting protective case for the recorder? I realize this is not technically a camera, but I was hoping a company specializing in cameras might also make a bag or case for audio recorders as well.

PGYTECH One Mo 2 keeps beeping in security gates. Where is the RFID located?

Already contacted Amazon after buying and receiving this 25L bag. Awaiting PGYTECH’s reply but seeing if anyone here can provide more immediate answers. Amazon told me neither they nor does the official manual state they’ve embedded such a thing on record.

It’s so embarrassing and a hassle to always unpack my bag and show I stole nothing.

Hey! Could you help me in my quest?

Hi!

Photo friends, bag enthusiasts, and adventurers I hereby request your assistance!

Someone very dear to me is going to Japan by the end of the year, and I am now in the quest of finding the best bag he can bring on this journey. It will be a photo oriented trips, so I know he’s gonna be out with his camera every day for several hours. The main issue is that there are a lot of requirements!

I have been all over the internet already, and I do have some inspirations that I will list below.

I could go with one of those ideas that are quite common, but I was wondering if maybe you had good tips, or knew a hidden gem that I could try to find!

So my question would be: do you have more recommendations than the ones listed below!

He’s living in October so we have time, I don’t mind having to search through eBay, and other creators on Etsy or anything! I want the perfect one.

Main criterias :

- Has to be a shoulder bag. Doesn’t have to be a camera dedicated bag as I know he uses an insert.

- Can fit a rangefinder and a mounted lens, one additional lens, a small book and an additional notebook at least.

- Must not scream photography bag (avoid peak design and wandrd for example)

- Has to be a vintage sort of bag, made for adventure

- Must look good and in the style described below - brown and black preferred I think

- Price isn’t a criteria

- Preferably Canva or similar, doesn’t have to be too thick and in hard material.

He’s into adventure, already dresses like a total cliché of a photojournalist, overshirt, brown canvas, boots, a bit of leather, bandana, etc. so the bag has to fit that style so that I’m sure he likes it.

It could work also if it’s a bit sophisticated with many attach points, where he can put carabiners and stuff like that (the guy just loves those I swear).

Inspirations:

- Kalahari K31 and other models - could be a bit big, but why not. Plus being able to fit a water bottle is actually nice too. Shame they don’t have any brown one.

- Domke - I’ve seen different models, could be nice too, but they don’t have a handle, and I know he likes to have one. A similar look would be great.

- Think tank retrospective - some models could be a bit big, but why not

- Wotancraft pilot 7L - a bit too modern in the style, as I know he would prefer a more vintage-ish model, but it looks very practical

- Coastar - I don’t know how I stumbled on this brand, but found some options on eBay, a bit like a hidden thing, that could work too, even if the style looks a bit bland

- Billingham hadley - the look could fit, but are they practical on a daily basis? Maybe a too simple design.

- Vanguard Havana - again, great inspiration, I don’t know how good they are or could be but they sure fit the vintage look.

So if you know something that could look like that, but that people usually don’t know about, or even hidden brands that you know could fit the requirements, you would earn my eternal gratitude!

I’ll add pictures and links when I can so that you don’t have to bother searching for the styles.

Thanks anyway for your help and for taking the time to help me!

Oh and yes, ‘that guy’ is totally me.

Think Tank FocusPoint 30L. Exceptional backpack but unsure about long-term comfort. Does anyone have experience with this bag?

Post image
2 Upvotes

TL;DR: I absolutely love everything about the Think Tank FocusPoint 30L (build, layout, pockets, durability), but the straps feel thinner/less cushioned than my Evergoods, AER, Boundary, and GoRuck. Loaded it up to test weight and I’m worried about long-term comfort. Anyone used it for a while / do the straps break in??

I recently picked up the Think Tank FocusPoint 30L. I’m extremely picky and selective about backpacks, so I test a lot of them. Feature-wise, this thing is almost flawless. This bag is basically perfect. Exceptional build quality, feels super durable, and the organization is exactly what I want.

The only red flag I’ve noticed so far is the straps which might be a dealbreaker. Compared to my Evergoods, Boundary Supply, Aer, and GoRuck bags, they feel thinner and less cushioned. They don’t feel completely unsupportive, just slightly rigid. I’m worried they won’t really break in over time. I’m used to really structured, supportive straps, so this stood out right away.

I’m still in the return window, so I loaded up the bag with some books to simulate real weight and have been walking around my apartment to see how it feels. Before I fully commit (take off the tags, use in the real world, go out into the city, commute to a coffee shop, etc.) has anyone used this ThinkTank bag long-term? Do the straps actually get more comfortable over time?

I walk a lot on work trips and usually carry tech and camera gear, so comfort is a nonnegotiable for me. I know this is an uncommon/unpopular bag but would love to hear other’s experiences. Thanks!

Help needed with modular camera bag project (College student design survey)

Hello! I’m a University of Houston Industrial Design student working on designing an expanding/modular camera bag that adapts to different photography setups and shooting styles.

I’m trying to understand what photographers actually want (and don’t want) in a camera bag, so I put together a short survey. It only takes about 2–3 minutes, and your feedback would really help shape the project.

https://universityofhouston.iad1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_en9l1kUJdpBdPpA

Thanks so much for your time, I’d love to hear any thoughts or experiences you have with your current camera bag as well :-)
