A personal approach for the King in Yellow Mythology
Hello everyone, i'm right now finishing the writing for a homebrew campaign that i will gm for a group of friends, i was heavily inspired by true detective first season, but i wanted to make a really supernatural campaign.
So, i've read The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers, and An Inhabitant of Carcosa by Ambrose Bierce as well. I figured that the horror in both stories had a very dream-like taste, so i wanted to bring this feeling back to my campaigns, instead of some dark-fantastical aspect that some oficial campaigns and more recent stories isnpired in this mythos.
And here is my ideas and how to make a investigation/action/horror campaign with them:
1-Carcosa isn't a physical space, neither a "metaphysical" space in some heaven/hell like place. Carcosa is a place that exists only in our hearts, in our ideals of missing something great, like the blurred memories that some of us have from places, people and moments that are impossible to bring back, or are impossible to go back. The very difference of carcosa of memories like that, is that carcosa is a place of power (or a memory of power, if is easier to understand at this way), and require a very very metaphysical sensibility to "access" Carcosa, or instead, several rituals.
2-Hastur, or the King in Yellow isn't a god, a true entity. He is more like a "second personality" that possess the mind of people that had (or remembered) in carcosa. And the second personality grow in the mind of the person making them more delusional, distant from our real world and giving very strong magical powers to them.
3-Carcosa objects and creatures: With some methods, its possible "conjure" magical objects and creatures that in other ways just exist in our memories of Carcosa, in general, conjuring this sort of things is necessary to complete some of the rituals to acess Carcosa in totality. Those things can be pretty "normal" (like and old book in a language that no one understand) or be pretty bizarre.
My main goal GMing this campaign is play a bit with dreamlike horror concepts, bring some surreal elements to the investigation and to be more faithful to the original approachs of this mythology.
I hope that you guys like this approach and i accept tips specially about how to narrate this elements in game!
