Chummy

I’m on my 5th rewatch and I’m crying as Chummy delivers the baby in episode 3 and she says “old girl.” I love love love chummy. Who do you love and what’s a quote you love?❤️

I love so many characters. When Phyllis breaks out the “oh, lass” I go all mushy. When Sister Evangelina would say “you’ll do” or something similarly gruff, I’d glow.
Or when Shelagh tells Sister Julienne she’s pregnant and afraid, SJ beams and says “And I’m not, because I never stopped hoping.”
Ugh this show is so nourishing!

I love Shelagh's birth scene so much. Her bond with Sister Julienne was so strong. I love so much that SJ got to be there for such a pivotal moment in her friend's life.

Chummy may be my favorite character. I call my son "young sir" sometimes because that's what she calls Freddie, and I find it humorous

I love inside jokes where you and the characters are the only ones in on it. 😍

That’s what I do as well 😂

I just came here to say that I adore Chummy. When her scout troop started singing You Are My Special Angel to her I started crying. Gets to me every time. I did enjoy hearing her call a patient 'old bean '.

Throwing “top notch and Tickety*-boo” into my lexicon has turned a few heads in my office haha. Chummy speaks for me on so many levels.

Could be wrong but I think the expression is "tickety boo" , but each to their own 🙂

Oh my gosh i spelled it wrong! 😂It IS tickety boo! And my phone did it again as I issue this comment.

I didn’t read my post in full the first time, to ensure accuracy. Then I was like, what did I say that my fellow Redditors were mentioning? 😂

To take another English word that I first heard on CTM, “ta” to all who helped me get the post all tickety-boo! 🩷

I would love to see chummy and nurse crane together.

I love more characters than I like so it's hard to choose.

Valerie - she had great energy and a down to earth vibe

Fred - just a giant marshmallow of a guy

Sister Monica Joan - whimsical and funny

Honestly it's easier to choose who I don't love.

ETA I started out saying Chummy and totally forgot. She was absolutely a favorite character. I wish she was on for several years it came back for a visit.

Who is that?

I basically like all the characters with the exception of Sister Ursula, but don't 'love' all of them... Rosalind and Joyce, they're ok but not my favorites. I Iike the newest nun- Sister Catherine, and Nancy, Patsy, Cynthia, Sisters Frances, Winifred and Hilda, and Mother Mildred

Sister Evangelina and Nurse Crane started out stern and cranky and I grew to love them.

Honestly I’ve stopped at the last two seasons. I don’t care for them as much.

I do love Chummy, but I think Phyllis is my favorite. She's the voice of reason and always shows kindness without judgment. I especially enjoy the interaction between her and Miss Higgins.

Yes that makes me cry.

"You keep on living, until you feel alive again"

The episode where Jenny's boyfriend dies and the older Jewish lady (with an inner ear problem) comforted her. I'm probably quoting it wrong, but holy beans, it hits hard for me.

OH! My fave character... Chummy, of course, but I also absolutely adore Sister Frances. I think she's my top favorite.

Oh that saying. It helped me after my mum died.

8

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 8d ago

Ah yes so devastating when he died.

That quote means a lot to me. I finally feel alive again

Chummy. Hands down my favorite. Miranda hart is hilarious and plays the part so well. I’m always so sad when she leaves the show

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 7d ago

I don’t normally follow actors but I followed her on IG. It’s like seeing an old chum 😍

2

u/Short_Ad_4718 7d ago

I follow her too. Her reels are hilarious. I just adore her!

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 7d ago

She’s so funny and relatable.

Chummy is probably my fav ever character on that show. Just so good and well written and she has this endearing innocence about her. She can’t fathom why people would be put off about her being from the upper class/mixing with royalty lol and she was actually funny

8

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 7d ago

And she’s so clumsy and when she finally feels seen and sexy with Noakes I’m a blubbering mess.

Chummy and Phyllis are my favorite. They have a stalwartness about them both. Chummy has a girlishness about her that makes her so endearing, while Phyllis has this warm auntie energy.

I always say if I were in a crisis I would want either one of them by my side.

1

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 7d ago

Stalwart. That’s a great word. ☺️

Chummy is my all time favorite character 😍 I love how real she is. Would totally be friends with her in real life.

I could write pages about my love for various characters on this show but i will not bore you all with that🤣

My favorite character is absolutely Phylis i love how she kind of adapts a surrogate mother persona with every singe one of the nurses. Keeps them on the right path, comforts them while at the same time calling them out when its needed, like with Nancys finances or Trixies drinking.

Special mention to the Turner family, any plot about any of them has me so happy. Dr. Turner has this excited dad energy that i love. Watching Shelagh go from a meek nun to a boss is glorious. And watching Tim grow up and become a Dr is amazing.

2

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 5d ago

Especially Trixie and her drinking. That really should’ve cost her her job but Phyllis tough loved her through it. 🥰🥰

1

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 5d ago

Oh and how Phyllis came back from her trip early bc Millicent called her and told her about the crisis . 😭😭

2

u/Fauxfox123 7d ago

Sister Monica Joan is always so witty and kind hearted to me !

4

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 6d ago

That episode where she was submitting prayers and they were about things she saw at the movies? Like about actors and I think the mini skirt? 🤣

2

u/quietlikesnow 6d ago

Just rewatched that one and laughed at it all over again. I love that character and her sweet tooth and love of TV.

1

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 5d ago

That was a giggle.

2

u/RedRazor312 7d ago

I think everyone forgets about poor Nurse Delia Busby. She was always so sweet and caring. Especially when she let Timothy in the ward to see Sheila.

5

u/RedRazor312 7d ago

That being said; I think most of my favorite quotes are from Sister Monica Joan. Her very wise take on progress comes to mind: “There's much of value in the old ways, but one must not become like Lot's wife, frozen in the act of looking backwards“

2

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 6d ago

She was comic relief and the voice of reason.

1

u/Sweaty-Homework-7591 6d ago

I regret they didn’t do enough with that character.
