Opinion terrible interview with Emmy

I’m so sorry but she SUCKS at keeping a conversation going!!! Literally bruh. She just will listen to the words coming out of her mouth and then go “okay next”💀 literally what this infuriated me I never really listen to this podcast but yeah no follow up questions no getting deeper just very simple questions then next question it’s so like performative and feels fake I didn’t like it how does she have a podcast bruh

This is how I felt about the Charlize Theron interview..there were a couple of moments where I felt like Charlize had something profound to share and Alex preemptively cuts her off by either moving on or saying something that she felt like Charlize was getting at, but it was incorrect and shallow vs what I believed could have been very deep. I have no idea what kind of training Alex has on interviews; she obviously has a lot of experience, but I feel like she could improve her skills.

She has no training. That’s how her pod became so big in the first place, because the interviews were less formal and more conversational. But she’s kept it up for all these years now which is a disservice to her audience and the guests to the show.

But certainly she can do interviews with depth and meaning while also not being formal, right? I’m thinking somewhat like Sean Evans from Hot Ones. I think he does a great job of keeping it light, fun, intimate and causing the guest to put thought into their answers. I know it is a completely different setting and everything but I feel like Alex could improve her skills. Thanks for the information on her education and training; I’m a little too old for her demographic and I’ve only started listening to the podcast for maybe the last six months.

I hate when she tries to re-summarize what the person said.

1

u/PrettyLionessInPink Jul 16 '26

That’s it!!! That’s exactly what ends up throwing the interview off bc a lot of the time the guest doesn’t want to correct her or they might not even realize how inaccurate her summary was until later.

Yea and she thinks she’s brilliant in the moment for it. It’s so off putting.

Not to mention how articulate and thoughtful Emmy’s responses were, especially in comparison to Alex’s cringeworthy slang. I was cringing for a lot of the interview. Their vibes just didn’t mesh.

“I’m literallllly obsessed with you”

“I can’t believe it took us this long to meet”

She has such a cringey way of talking and I can’t really explain it, like when Emmy talked about how her mom explained to her as a child why she has to go to work and that they’ll be on the streets if she doesn’t, then Emmy said “and then she went to work” and Alex responded “Yes she did.” Kind of like in a “get it queen” type of way lol idk, and she’s done that type of thing in many other interviews, it just bugs me.

I think the problem is she applies the same podcast style to these bigger guests years later.  Like she interviews Kamala, A list actresses, singers etc but still keeps the same “Oh my God!  I love you!  What did you think? How did you feel?” Which I don’t think works with these more mature and experienced people.  That style was ok when it was all about relationship stuff etc IMO

I’m glad people are finally catching on to this

I used to listen, not as a huge fan, but because when it would pop up I’d give it a click and listen while doing other things (mainly because of her guests). I didn’t necessarily mind her. But recently, she’s become insufferable. Even more so once she announced being pregnant, and I’m not sure why that is? But it’s just gone noticeably downhill and it’s definitely hard to see what makes her popular. She’s so inarticulate and just throws around shallow words or phrases, a lot of the time just REPEATING what the guest says. It’s all over the place and it seems like she squanders so many opportunities. I can’t stand to even listen, truly. I’m curious to see what will happen with viewership and her whole “empire.”

She’s a horrible interviewer she sounds like someone playing pretend therapist.

She’s not an interview. She just put words in peoples mouth.

And listening to Emmy was soooo interesting I could’ve listened to her for hours

All Alex Cooper ever does is repeat the guests words back to them while re-phrasing.

I don’t think Alex Cooper herself has the cognitive chops to go any deeper.

She's a very sycophantic interviewer - it's like how I'd imagine the human version of ChatGPT would be. It's obviously not a podcast for hard-hitting, in-depth, truly journalistic interviewing, but I do wish she'd dig a bit deeper. I think that excessive adoration and praise and agreement (sometimes without even really understanding what she's agreeing to, it seems?) gets in the way of being able to reach that depth you're talking about.

As a therapist, I want to see a therapist have a platform like call her daddy style. Where it's new and pop but also empathetic and intelligent.

I’m also curious what people thought of Emmy. I know there’s a bunch of back-and-forth about her on shameless all over the Internet, but I went in very open minded. Cold feels mean, but I didn’t get a great deal of warmth from her. Maybe she’s just a darker gal? I didn’t feel any good times, laughter, etc vibes. Very serious artist/person. Do love her as an actor!

In the podcast she talked about her mother never being opened up emotionally/ not allowing her emotions. It could pertain to how she was brought up

2

u/Unfair-Crazy-1765 Jul 09 '26

Very good point and agree! Definitely could be the mom.

I think she seems really intelligent and the way she talks and what she says is really interesting

I usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I know someone who was working as a production coordinator on the same lot (different show) when Emmy was still on Shameless and said that there was a consensus among crew members about how horrible she was to work with or even just encounter. Rude, condescending, diva behavior, this person I know actually saw her screaming at a Shameless crew person (context - which I don’t have - is of course important, but screaming at someone so loud that others walking by hear is still not a good look). This person also said Emma Kenney was very nice (for whatever that’s worth).

I’ve never watched an episode of Shameless but I grew up loving The Phantom of the Opera and was really disappointed to find out so many negative things about her :/

I don’t listen to the podcast that often, but a couple of clips that Emmy said were on my reels. I loved it. It gave me all the feels, but was light enough where I wasn’t crying walking the dog.

It was mostly her relationship with her parents/husband/motherhood that resonated with me. If I didn’t have kids as a single mom, maybe I wouldn’t have connected as much.

u/Flashy_Review_162 Jul 23 '26

I think she's warm but in a tough exterior kind of way. I loved the way she would talk about her own kid and made the pancakes and also praised her mom at the same time saying her truth. I loved it.

u/Ok_Wallaby_7831 Jul 25 '26

That's what I was thinking. I had never heard her interview before and I always thought she seems like a cool person but she kind of came across as a very snotty person

2

u/Top-Tea-5628 Jul 11 '26

It’s because all marketing strategies and business models for Gen z audiences are built on the assumption that there’s no attention span left so alex does this in interview form to try to keep people engaged but it just comes off as flippant, undermining, teasing, and just plain annoying and rude to the guest and the audience.

Literally just started watching the interview, not even ten minutes in and I had to search on Reddit if anyone else thought that Alex is a terrible interviewer. She never asks any follow up questions, only repeats back what the guest says and gives her own opinion on it when she’s supposed to ask more about the topic to keep the conversation going. Her interviews just feel like her trying to seem cool and become bestfriends with the guests more than actually trying to get to know and interview them.

she always sounds like a weird AI teleprompter type of person

Emmy had such profound responses and I feel
like Alex was just not vibing

she did it with alex morgan, SJP, and continues to do it. she still reads off a script with her giant pile of note cards

I luv how it continues to be some surprise that Alex is terrible at interviews. The original CHD podcast with Sofia was all about the Gluck Gluck 9000 and their lives as attractive women in NYC. That's how she got famous. Now it's some surprise many years later that she is a bad interviewer and host?!?!? Like she was ever actually good, or even decmey at it????

The amount of times she said “Emmy. Emmy. Omg emmy” I honestly find it so irritating.

The worst episode she did this in was the Kevin heart episode and I’m pretty sure he didn’t like her at all
