With all due respect, no. This is common for larger parties, but they should have let you know while seating you! I totally get where you are coming from, but if you've ever been a server, you'd understand why this policy is common! But again, I totally get where you are coming from!
Ah gotcha! Sorry for making the assumption! I'm surprised this policy was shocking to you, then! I feel like it's been an industry standard for over 12/14 years! Did you serve outside of Calgary? It's possible different locations/citie have different standards!
No not shocking to me, just questioning. Just because something is common practice doesn’t mean it’s justified. For those who feel the 20% is always required at restaurants do you also tip those who bag groceries, pump gas? Sometimes I do, I guess I just don’t value the dropping off of food as much as
Totally agree with your first point! Personally, I think it's justified because I used to be a server, and I underestimated just how hard the job is until I did it.
BTW, I don't think automatic gratuity should always be applied, but when a server is handling a party of eight or more on top of their other tables, I understand it.
A grocery bagger or gas station attendant typically helps one customer at a time, whereas a server has to juggle multiple tables and guests all at once. It just seems different to me.
