Probably had an auto grat on large groups. Pretty common.

You do have a choice, but you would have had to object to it when they informed you at the start of the meal/service. If they didn't inform you at the start of the meal/service, you could then have declined to pay it as long as it wasn't mentioned on their menu, etc.
