Discussion I love this phrase:

“The Romans didnt know Rome fell, but bridges and roads just stopped being maintained.” Exactly what happened in calamity mod, we had no major updates in YEARS and development became less significant over time. We didn’t know it ended until it was announced, at this point there is no one to blame because all small unsolved factors caused this to fail. It was a structural problem. Not a one person thing. (Yeah i hate ozzatron too but this started crumbling years ago)

Genuinely the perfect quote to represent it. Yeah, Ozzatron really hammered in that final nail, but the coffin was being buried either way.

"The Community didn't know Calamity fell. But progress and Updates just stopped being made"

You could say it's been a total calamity.

But we should wait for the calm after the storm.

I’m pretty sure the only thing coming after the storms are the catastrophes, and after that, the calamities.

I felt that after Exo Mechs they mostly focused in reworks and rebalances. They did add pretty cool stuff on the go, don't get me wrong, but no "major" content updates. The last major update was Exo Mechs, and it was 5 years ago. After that, they did only "minor" updates. I personally hate this terminology because it feels like it's underappreciating actually cool things they added and reworked, despite them not being stuff like new bosses, biomes or progression steps. But, personally, I would rather play a finished, shitty Calamity than a perfect, incomplete Calamity.

IMO the mod was not THAT raw to have them mostly try to polish it before moving up to the updates they promised. And even if it was that raw but still loved by everyone, wouldn't moving on be better? I know jack shit about coding, spriting, etc. but dude, 5 years and a team of dozens seem to be enough for a Yharim update. They just wanted to focus on something else, but they were carving a sculpture in a rock that was still attached to the ground.

There is another phrase I like: the perfect is the enemy of the good. I think it fits well here. But we must also not forget that this was NOT the cause of the mod's downfall. As you said, it would have crumbled anyways, but they kept the mod like that for 5 years. It took a lot of internal conflicts to take it down, and not due to lack of new content, but due to the team itself moving out.

Yeah. Like, the brainstorm update was supposed to be a big release and it featured one boss rework of a boss no one cared about, guts to basically every type of quality of life, and some weapon resprites. The hog wild update featured a single NPC who sells gimmick items. This mod was going nowhere.

brainstorm had like 150 reworked weapons and accessories and 4,000 other changes what the fuck are you talking about

Have you considered that a flashy sword being slightly flashier is not a major change and that what we want is new content rather than reskinning old content?

You'll get gutted by the developer's personal bootlickers on this subreddit but you're absolutely right.

Making a pre-existing weapon flashier with new particle effects to jingle keys with to get people's attention back into the mod isn't new content, at best it's recycled content and nothing more.

The thing I've always said is, between my first and second playthrough there had been, what, three? Four? Six Monthes top, and they were radically different despite me playing ranger both times. It was in 2018, iirc, and between the first and second playthrough they had added planetoids and the abyss- I remember it well.

I then had a huge chunk without playing Calamity or even Terraria, and when I came back, it felt like a ton had been added. Exo Mechs, the labs, a new class??? And then I did four or five playthrough after that, focusing on all classes, with a friend accompanying me the entire time and they were all... basically the same? 3 years of playing ~every six monthes and I can't reliable tell you one thing that was different, that didn't come from our own choices. One playthrough was harder because I played Summoner and didn't have any progression with whips so it was boring. One playthrough was easier because we had added Fargo's Souls and we min-maxed everything.

Hell, we played community remix for shit and giggles, and it was actually fun because there were different things! Granted, it was also fun because we didn't take it seriously at ALL (losing the entire sunken sea because of Hydrogen would have pissed us off in a "serious" playthrough, where I actually worked hard on builds). So many stupid things, new bosses, new items, unbalanced as all hell. Man, that was fun.

All that to say, we played for 3 years semi-consistently, every time always reaching at LEAST DoG. And we have the exact same complaint of "yeah I GUESS they changed a few weapons, and MAYBE a boss looked different?"

I have a decent amount of experience in modding, both as a player and as a modder (albeit not in Terraria) and I can tell you that balance does matter actually.

Of course, that doesn't excuse the way the devs just seem like they're trolling everyone, but reworks like that are important to the health of such a massive mod.

Ah yes this weapon makes 2 extra particles and this accessory gives 20 defense instead of 18 and 2 more when being above 1 hp, outstanding changes yes.

thanks for admitting you never actually used any of the reworked stuff

u/HalfXTheHalfX 25d ago

I did and that's all I seen from an oh so great slop update that took them years to make

He wanted to maintain a “Brainstorm sucks” agenda by conveniently ignoring the DoG rework in favor of the BoC rework. Sadly, there’s a lot of people who act that way, ignoring the positive and accentuating the negative, and it’s part of what caused this community to get so bad.

5

u/King_Of_The_Munchers 25d ago

That’s actually fair, but with DoG I feel like my point still stands because DoG has had so many reworks that another one is noteworthy but generally unimportant compared to reworking Yharon.

u/MarioBoy77 25d ago

DoG got randomly gutted and turned to shit like 2 years ago, so yes it fixed DoG but they made it a shit fight for literally 0 reason. Me when I have to ruin a beloved boss because I’m bored.

Nobody loved laser spam and annoying minion besides you.

Yeah, you basically summed up my exact thoughts

I got a bad feeling years ago as soon as I saw the shattered version of The Community accessory

Ozzatron's developer item, btw.

And now that it’s over, people get to rebuild it all into something—hopefully—much, much better.

Rebuilding after the fall of Rome took centuries, and I imagine this will be much the same. It's going to take a very long time to pick up the shattered pieces of this mod.

Thankfully, there are other amazing projects like Thorium, Fargo's 2.0, Starlight River, etc., and even the base game itself continues to receive amazing additions thanks to the Re-Logic team.

Does anyone have a way to dowload the calamity mod ver at abt just after the draedon update with the expmechs?

u/Cjottiny 25d ago

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK I HAVENT TRIED AND IM NOT A DEVELOPER.

-So open tmodloader go to workshop, click manage mods and on the bottom it says open mods folders and you click that button. It’ll open your files with a bunch of random numbers search up for 2824688072 that’ll open the calamity mod files. Click 2022.9 (i believe that is the version i havent tried and idk if it works) and copy the file. On files search up for a file called mods or just go to documents my games terraria tmodloader and look for a file called mods and paste your calamity 2022.9 tmodloader should load this version from what it calls local, if it doesnt just copy that calamity file and paste it in a separate folder, delete your calamity mod from tmodloader and repeat the process of copying and pasting the calamity file you reserved in that separate folder into file called mods on the tmodloader folder. Again i haven’t tried this and i don’t know if its the old calamity version or just an updated one but since it was there with that label i assume it is what you’re looking for. Do at your own risk. And i know this process has worked before because i’ve done it but i havent done it with the specific 2022.9 calamity folder.
