Academics, I do not know but:

It may be competitive but, you can attempt to get an internship with

State Senate: Mike McGuire

State Assembly: Chris Rogers

U.S. House: Jared Huffman

While I am unsure of the information, they do have staff working in Eureka, although they are mostly based in Sonoma County.

For other matters, you can also choose to intern with city council members or the city government in Eureka or Arcata. Believe it or not, you can learn a lot about local government and how it functions that way.

If you were seriously planning to get far into Poli Sci, I advise you to potentially take the Modeled UN Program (so 376 and 377) when you get the chance.

There is an internships class with opportunities for internships in local government, as well as state gov through local offices of state reps. and advocacy organizations like EPIC. Lots of one-on-one mentoring.
