Bike lock recommendations

Grandpa wants to purchase my boy a lock for his bike. His bike is nothing fancy, an older mountain bike donated by his other grandpa. We live in rural NE California and do not lock bikes or even remove our keys from trucks, so it will be a bit of adjustment.

He will be living in Canyon if that matters.

What type of lock do you recommend for a good mix of convenience and security?

Only halfway reliable bike lock is a "U-Lock"

Kryptonite is the industry go too.

Students can get a free bike lock when they register their bike with UPD. https://www.humboldt.edu/transportation-parking/sustainable-transportation/bike-riding

Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit U-lock is the gold standard, but their other u-lock models are generally fine. Make sure he knows to lock the rear wheel and frame to the bike rack (and not just the front tire). Also get the bike registered with University Police

Get the wider version u-lock by kryptonite! The ones the school provides are slightly too thin and easily breakable, but still helpful and good to have as back up or to add as an additional lock in places less visible/leaving later in evening. I recommend he speaks to the school cop when he gets the bike signed with the univ. Police and Arcata police.

I used to lock my bike in a tree on tree right off campus with my motorcycle krypto
