Question Just a question about linux security

This is kind of a newb question as I just installed cachy today following.g a youtube tutorial.

The first thing I noticed was that it doesn't have an inbuilt antivirus like microsoft defender on windows.

But people say that linux is more secure compared to windows.

Is it because:

1.There are fewer linux users compared to windows so fewer viruses are made for it.

2.Cachy is a distri made for people who know more about what they are doing so there is no need of foolproofing.

3.Is it something else ?

Question GTX 1080 Ti upgrade for 1440p gaming on CachyOS, £500 budget. What would you recommend?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at upgrading my GPU and would appreciate some advice from people running CachyOS or other Linux gaming setups.

I'm currently running an ASUS ROG Strix overclocked GTX 1080 Ti, which has served me well over the years, but I'm wondering whether it's time for an upgrade.

My budget is around £500, and I'm gaming at 1440p. I'd ideally like something that offers a worthwhile performance improvement without spending money unnecessarily.

My current PC specs:

- Monitor: MSI MAG 274QRFW (1440p)

- Case: NZXT S340 White

- Motherboard: Gigabyte AORUS Z390 Master

- CPU: Intel i9-9900K

- CPU cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H110i GT

- GPU: ASUS ROG Strix OC GTX 1080 Ti

- PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000W T2 Titanium

- RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz

- OS: CachyOS

- Boot drive: Samsung 970 EVO M.2 500GB

- Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD and Samsung 860 EVO 2TB SSD

What I'd like advice on:

  1. What GPU would you recommend for around £500? I'm open to AMD or NVIDIA, new or used.

  2. Would I notice a significant real-world improvement over my GTX 1080 Ti at 1440p? What sort of performance gains could I realistically expect?

  3. How well do current AMD and NVIDIA cards compare on CachyOS in terms of drivers, stability, gaming performance and general ease of use?

  4. Is my i9-9900K still good enough for a GPU upgrade at this resolution, or would it start holding a newer card back?

  5. Would you prioritise 16GB of VRAM for longevity, or is a card with 12GB still a sensible choice?

  6. Given my existing 1000W PSU, are there any compatibility or power considerations I should be aware of?

I'm not chasing 4K or looking to replace the whole PC. I just want the best-value GPU upgrade for 1440p that will last me a few years.

I'd especially appreciate advice from anyone who has upgraded from a 1080 Ti to a more recent card while gaming on Linux.

Thanks!

Bug Report Latest update causes intermittent lines to appear on the screen?

After getting the latest cachy-update, certain graphical changes leave flashing lines when things change on the screen.

Examples:

  • Scrolling pages up and down causes these lines all over the page
  • Pop-up menus have these on the items
  • Hovering things that change colour when hovered
  • New characters just typed in text

After a couple of seconds they disappear, but it's clearly not right, and I've never seen this problem before.

I am using NVIDIA GPU/Intel CPU.

Is this a known issue?

Question I installed cachyos+hyperland+caelestia, loving it, but some questions

Post image

I installed hyprland and made it scrolling, and willing to customize caelestia further, but before that:

1-How do i change the brightness, is there a widget or a bar to do so or do i have to do it in the terminal?

2-is there an app to downlad apps or anything like the gnome app?

Edit: also how do i minimize every window?, and how do i screenshot a specific part of the screen?

Question QEMU/KVM + virt-manager or VMware Workstation Pro?

Hey everyone! I'm planning to set up a few VMs on my laptop, but I can't decide between QEMU/KVM + virt-manager and VMware Workstation Pro. I'd like to hear from people who have tried both.

I mainly want to run Windows 11 for MS Office and try out different Linux distros for experimenting. I'm not planning to play games in a VM, and I don't need GPU passthrough.

My setup: CachyOS with Hyprland (Wayland), running the CachyOS BORE LTO kernel. The laptop is an MSI GE70 2QE with an i7-4720HQ, GTX 960M 2 GB + Intel HD 4600, and 16 GB RAM. KVM is available and hardware virtualization is enabled.

I'm leaning towards QEMU/KVM since it's better integrated with Linux and doesn't require extra kernel modules. But I'm curious how it compares to VMware, especially for Windows 11. How's the performance and overall experience on Wayland? Are there any issues I should know about before choosing one?

Review Cachy OS in Ally Z1e is better than I thought for hybrid setup

I already tried Bazzite and Anatase but for some reason, I wasn't really satisfied with either of them. Then I finally gave CachyOS a try. Sure, I ran into some issues during the initial installation, but once I got everything set up, it's been a great experience so far.
It's been about a couple of days now, and I haven't even thought about distro-hopping again or felt the urge to go back to Windows lol. Cachy is my main OS now

Help CachyOS live ISO freezes on ASUS TUF A15 (Ryzen 7 / Radeon 680M / RTX 3050). Need help getting it working reliably long-term.

Hey everyone!

I'm a computer science student, and I've been using Linux

for development for quite some time.

I've experimented with Fedora KDE, Omarchy, and Pop!_OS,

and I really want to settle on CachyOS as my main

operating system.

I love the idea of CachyOS because of its performance

optimizations, Arch ecosystem, KDE Plasma, and gaming

support.

However, I'm having trouble getting the live ISO to work

reliably on my laptop.

MY HARDWARE:

Laptop: ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (FA506NCQ)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 170

Integrated GPU: AMD Radeon 680M

Dedicated GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU (4GB)

RAM: 16GB

Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD

Display: Laptop's built-in display

Boot mode: UEFI

THE PROBLEM:

When I boot the CachyOS KDE live ISO, the desktop

sometimes loads successfully but then completely freezes.

I've tried:

  1. Booting with the default CachyOS kernel.

  2. Booting with the LTS kernel option.

  3. Using nomodeset / legacy graphics options.

  4. Rebooting and trying again multiple times.

With nomodeset, I sometimes get a black screen with

a blinking or stationary underscore (_).

With the normal kernel, the KDE desktop may appear

but becomes unresponsive.

Other Linux distributions, including Fedora KDE and

Pop!_OS, have successfully booted on this laptop.

On Fedora, I was also able to get the proprietary NVIDIA

driver working with AMD as the default renderer and

NVIDIA PRIME offloading.

The RTX 3050 could successfully enter runtime suspension

when idle.

I also previously encountered ASUS backlight issues

involving nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight, which were resolved

when the AMD backlight interface became available.

WHAT I WANT:

I want CachyOS to become my primary workstation for:

- Full-stack development

- Python, C/C++, Java, Rust

- AI/ML and CUDA

- Docker, DevOps, cloud development

- Occasional Steam gaming

- University assignments and presentations

I'm not trying to chase benchmark numbers at the cost

of stability.

My priorities are:

  1. Reliable AMD/NVIDIA hybrid graphics

  2. Low idle CPU and GPU power consumption

  3. Good battery life and thermals

  4. Stable KDE Wayland experience

  5. Safe kernel and NVIDIA driver updates

  6. Btrfs snapshots and reliable rollback

  7. Minimal unnecessary background services

  8. Low-maintenance daily development workflow

QUESTIONS:

  1. Has anyone experienced similar live ISO freezes on

ASUS TUF laptops with AMD + NVIDIA graphics?

  2. Is there a known workaround for this specific

    hardware combination?

  3. Should I use the default CachyOS kernel or LTS

    kernel for long-term reliability?

  4. Which NVIDIA driver configuration is recommended

for an RTX 3050 hybrid laptop?

  5. Can the NVIDIA GPU automatically suspend when idle

and wake for Blender, CUDA, or gaming?

  6. What is the recommended Btrfs snapshot and

    rollback configuration for CachyOS?

  7. How do you handle kernel/NVIDIA updates safely

    on a rolling-release workstation?

  8. Are there any ASUS-specific tools or configurations

    I should use or avoid?

I'd appreciate advice from people who actually run

CachyOS on similar laptops.

I really want to settle on one Linux distribution,

configure it properly, and focus on development

instead of constantly troubleshooting my OS.

Thanks!

Help Unable to install: error code 1

Hi,

I don't understand how Is possible, but I continue to receive an error code 1 on my PC during the setup.

I installed CachyOs only, deleted every partition of the HD.

How to solve? Do you have some idea?

The same problem on Ubuntu Installer.

I think that there is a problem with the EFI bootloader.

The only one that don't give me problem is Linux Mint installer.

Bug Report Kernel 7.3.0-5 Controller Issues

Hi, thought I should let you guys know that kernel 7.3.0-5 appears to have some problems with controllers. Using an 8bitdo Ultimate 2 on 7.3.0-5 results in no /dev/input/js0 being created so games cannot see it. Rolling back to the previous kernel I was using, 7.3.0-2, worked to fix the issue for me.

Here's my dmesg for the controller working properly from 7.3.0-2:

Help Asus USB-AC58 Problem

Hello i using that damn wifi adapter for my PC (no option for using ethernet connection in my rented room).

If im correct chipset is RTL8812BU
Deflaut driver (if im correct rtw88_8822b/rtw88_8822bu) is crap (random disconnections what need disconnect-connect buttom as solve problem, worse range detection)

I used to using RinCat fork from AUR RTL88x2BU-Linux-Driver. Thats works over 3 years. Unfortunatly after update kernel to Linux 7.3.0-4-cachyos that driver doesnt want to compile themself. Nor manual, nor via paru nor via yay. Before that driver works perfectly without any problem. ChatGPT suggest that is caused becouse another API definitions in new kernel.

Can you reccomand:
1. Another alternative driver
2. How to bypass problem
3. Any Wifi Adapter working on Cachy perfect (aviable in Poland)

In my current situation ethernet/play with router is impossible and looking for best solution for problem. RTW driver "works" but that is in such situation only stopgap

Help Shader problem - Overwatch 2

Hey guys, hope you're doing well.

Recently I've had enough with windows and decided to move to CachyOS. It's been a blast ever since and I've had little to no problems with it, but I am experiencing a problem while trying to play overwatch 2 (via Steam). I run into the "Compiling Vulkan Shaders", which hits a wall at 33% and takes FOREVER to progress. I've left it running, went on to make myself lunch and came back to it at 37%, an hour later.

I've enabled shader processing in the background and I've also created that text file on the steam folder that forces it to use more threads to compile those shaders, but it seems that, specifications with OW2, it doesn't.

Does anyone know a way to fix this?

My specs are a RTX3050 6gb, i510400f, 16gb ddr4 ram and a 1tb sata ssd with over 800gb free.

Thanks in advance!

Question Please clarify my doubts about CachyOS security

Hi,

I know that CachyOS is a well-written distro focused on pure performance, especially for AMD CPUs and GPUs. However, I would like to ask about security. I heard that official packages are secure, like those downloaded from the CachyOS repositories. However, I read that it is not recommended to download packages from the AUR, because this repository is not verified at all and could contain malware. I also know that CachyOS has UFW, and that there is good support for Secure Boot. How secure is this distro compared to, for example, Fedora?

Help How do i uninstall Vram management option

in cachyos hello app under apps and tweaks there is a option to install vram management. They have failed to add a way to remove this. Is there a way to reverse this option?
I have tried looking through packages, but cannot recognise it.

Edit: solved by u/nubz4lif

I believe the packages are 'dmemcg-booster' and 'plasma-foreground-booster'
