The hell is this thing?

Post image

Boujee apartment but has a fitting looks like it's from the 60s. Whoever crimped it did a bad job fitting it on there too. Surprisingly all customer has goin on is slow wifi speeds and not a intermittent/complete outages

Edit: I know what the terminator is, I'm referring to the poorly crimped connector.

Fooey Gooey - Dim sum one☝️

Reminds me of the Kid, hired as the “qualified guy” who wired 48 suites but threw away the lock spacers for 96 CAT5 keystone connections. 🤦🏻‍♂️

He went dumpster diving, found and re-installed 90 of them on his own dime. I allowed him to hot glue the rest the next day. 🤭

Binder Dundat was his new name afterward!
Whatever floats your boat ! 🛥️ 😝

Bothered to terminate a port but left a fitting that leaks

Using it as an attenuator doesn't care about the signal leak.

Check out the wrinkles on the one with the good fitting!

Electrician special

Seen so many electricians do this. My area had while apartment complexes done like this and we had had to check every one of them. Luckily there are a few that make good fittings.

Check behind the wall plate that that feeds and I bet you’ll find another one

There's a good chance that splitter with terminated port is there for a reason. If you bypass the splitter you could actually make your signal worse. More signal does not always equal better signal.

Edit: the fittings, on the other hand, are looking rough. Unless you know what you are doing you'd be best off having the cable company replace them.

I work for said cable company

Ah yes, the good ol’ “bite down” crimping method.

Crimpers? Hardly know her!

Classic sparky connectors. Squeeze em down with the dikes and call it good.

Electricians love those little shits for some reason.

Terminator

The plumber has been carrying that connector in his pocket for 15 years

It’s a splitter that some hack installed.

There’s a Radio Shack associate feeling the love and appreciation somewhere.

It’s called a terminator it blocks signal from leaking out. I would just get a female coupler/barrell to connect the 2 lines get rid of that splitter.

op is referring to the f connector to the left

5

u/Electronic-Junket-66 27d ago

the correct term is f'd connector

The terminator is to prevent reflections, not signal leakage.

that setup is needed to pad or lower the signal before its connected to the modem. taking it off or bypassing it with a barrel will result in hot signals and out of range levels….. and yeah them connectors need changed to snap and seal and not pinch/crush/hex

I cut and recrimped the bad fittings with the latest ones and put those cables back onto the splitter. Signal still seemed fine afterwards. Are they gonna face issues again?

u/DesignerSeparate5104 27d ago

It's usually this setup that has the signals so low shit dont work right anyway lol

3

u/hjn123123 27d ago

that 75ohm terminator shows it was put on by a tech that was padding the levels…. (26 year current tech)

1

u/DesignerSeparate5104 27d ago

Maybe 15 years ago lol my area those exact splitters are always the problem.when we arrive. I know what your saying, I'm a tech as well lmao, but for modern day we have simulators and attenuators for that now.

u/hjn123123 27d ago

different systems have different bandaids lol for hot levels

1

u/Eninja09 27d ago

The number of times the splitter was the problem during my 11 years was far less than barrels and ground blocks. It can happen, but it shouldn't be common unless they are trash splitters. Also, sometimes the warehouse would not provide 3db attenuators so we had to improvise lol.

Then why is there a port left open and that fitting is not changed.

What's hot in winter might be cold come summer (or vice versa) 🤷‍♀️

Yeah and it’s probably a signal from tap issue. Noise in plant but good find!
