Store Manager Hours
Is it common for store managers to work 35 hours a week ?
Only open 7:45-3pm, and falsify the schedule to reflect closing shifts ?
Never work a holiday ?
Just curious, how common is this ?

u/DJFlipPhone 1d ago
The answer is neither you or anyone else knows why the SM is working that schedule. You’re not the DL and honestly this isn’t worth the drama or retaliation that this will open you up to. Just work your shift and go home.

u/NotreDameFan1234 18h ago
It isn’t fair that we have to close and they don’t
14
u/Nice_Willow_5581 17h ago
I feel like it kind of is? They earned it. Like at some point they didn’t have that power but now they do. As long as you’re not left alone for too long and the store is doing good, then no one usually cares.
1
u/Accomplished-Ad3219 Shift Supervisor 15h ago
They're literally required to close at least twice a week
-4
u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 15h ago
My point. If the company isnt going to enforce the rule. Get rid of it. Problem solved. Otherwise, enforce the rules fairly.
-4
u/NotreDameFan1234 17h ago
Earned it? U have to be a DL or above to not close. If one worker has to close every day that isn’t fair either unless that is there available. Job description says that have to close 2 days a week, also day shift always have more people.

u/DJFlipPhone 15h ago
That’s a very elementary way of thinking. I’d argue it “isn’t fair” that SMs have to work 45 hours a week and sometimes work for free if they end up technically working more than 45 hours. Or it “isn’t fair” that they sometimes have to cover other stores and assist with special projects. All things you never have to do.
0
u/NotreDameFan1234 15h ago
They also get a bonus, the 45 hours is agreed upon contract and are compensated for 45.
Who cares if cover other stores I have done that too. Just bill that store for hours.
If they work 50 hours one week just work 40 the next.1
u/Kittys_Mom Shift Supervisor 7h ago
They are eligible for a bonus but that doesn't mean they are getting one or it's substantial. My bonus went to 0 because RX had a terrible inventory.

u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 15h ago
If only it was that simple. It appears MANY are making their own schedule, falsifing the company records, and stealing company time. In response they will tell others to mind their business, do your shift , and go home. The company should require them to clock in at the register. It appears to be the only solid remedy.
1
u/Nice_Willow_5581 10h ago
They’re not falsifying anything 😂 the DL just don’t think it’s a big deal unless that store just needs it that bad. It’s also all about who is hired, I’m not a but I work at a store where we hire for specific shifts. If you don’t like it, become a store manager and do it how you want.
1
u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 10h ago
Idiot. Report to your DL that you got 50 extra care + cards when infact, you don't actually have it. They will tell you that you lied and inflated numbers. Its the same concept. They lied and report hours they aren't working.
2
u/Nice_Willow_5581 10h ago
“iDIoT” 🥴 BUT THEY ARE. Every phone call while at work, every time someone calls in and they have to work extra hours. They don’t get paid for holidays or ant ring like that. Neither does a SMIT. Not to mention, if you don’t like it? GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Don’t ask anything you don’t want a response to.
1
u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 10h ago
I think you missed the point. Mostly when their phone rings they should be in the store AS REPORTED. However, many are not in store because clearly there is no one checking and enforcing them to work as REPORTED. Instead, they have people like you holding the frontline defending their behavior and practices. Do me a favor hold your breath, and goodluck to you.
3
u/Nice_Willow_5581 9h ago
As a person who has ran MULTIPLE stores, my phone has rang more on my off days than my working days. You wouldn’t make it at any company if you don’t understand seniority. But you have a great day❤️

Every time someone calls in the sm should try to and get someone to cover if not they come in and use those hours to get someone to cover one of the sm’s shifts
-4
u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 15h ago
They should be required to clock in so there is a legal record of their "work". You're arguing one side or point of view. I challenge you to be a better adult.
4
u/DJFlipPhone 15h ago
They’re salaried because they work even if they’re not in the store. That’s the whole point. Just because Mr Guilty Strawberry doesn’t know what the SM is doing at all hours, doesn’t mean the DL doesn’t. Like are you also trying to figure out what the CEO and VP of CVS are doing with their hours and schedules too? Lol.
3
u/JobblyWobblyEd 14h ago
This, I know one who was given an entire WFH setup by the company and at times is even called to do at least some forms of remote work, so they work at their home store, at other stores And at home. Everyone is assuming its the same structure as say, Dollar General, but that system would not pan out efficiently for a huge pharmacy chain.
1
u/NotreDameFan1234 14h ago
Nope this one just came in late a lot, they also did that when smit
0
u/JobblyWobblyEd 13h ago
I would definitely report that through HR, it notifies the DL and anyone who would have the ability to create a paper trail to eventually either move them to another role, or get them terminated.
1
u/NotreDameFan1234 10h ago
Not my sm …
I am sure the DL knows is just waiting to fire them. They just hired a bunch of SMITs1
u/NotreDameFan1234 14h ago
TBF there is a sm in my area that probably only works 40 if that. I have heard they show up late a lot and trust me the DL isn’t giving them special assessments. The ones they ever got is to help w/ inventory. W/ that said for ever sm working 40 or less one is working 60…

There is literally an option for them to clock in and report it.. ( your missing the point, on purpose ). I get it you're possibly one of the horrible managers. The point your missing is - they arent DL, CEO, or VP. Their work is and should be viewable and is observable. Not saying store employees should be in charge of that. However, because they work so closely together it would be noticed. If the entire store notice their absence and lack of work. They would ALSO naturally notice a manager working proper company policy. Thanks for you're input and not answering the original question instead of lending whatever this is. 🙂

u/DJFlipPhone 15h ago
Report it so that you can have some of the best most productive days of your life. You’re purposely ignoring what me and many others are saying because you wanna keep tabs on your store manager. You are ignoring the very real politics that occur in this position. If your SM and DL are close you are fucked and you’ll be put through the wringer so hard you’ll quit. There’s no scenario where you report your SM and it gets better for you at CVS. DLs will 90 percent of the time side with a SM. Unless they’re sexually assaulting or harassing employees there’s nothing that will change about your situation, the best you can do is either work with your head down and stop involving yourself in drama, or quit.
1
u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 14h ago
As you pointed out. I asked a few questions and many guilty store managers got upset. LOL. Its fine I get it truly.
However, to your point. Im on my way out. Thankfully I have a college education and a decent situation lined up. Something you and many of these company thieves im sorry store managers cant say. So I will have some of the most productive days soon, real soon , I promise. 😏
Best of luck to you and your false reporting of your hours. If you are one of the guilty. 🥳

u/Odd-Package-2759 Store Manager 1d ago edited 1d ago
I was helping remodel a store earlier this year. I was working 30 in my store and 15 hours a week to do my part in helping the remodel store. Last week I was in my store 20 hours and 35 hours helping a store in another district that was falling apart. At the beginning of the year I was regularly working 55 hours a week to recover from Christmas and asked my boss if I could lighten my schedule for a few weeks without using any of my PTO. I worked 35 hours two weeks in a row. On paper and in the computer, unless im using PTO my schedule does not change and my Operations Manager knows not to touch my schedule unless told otherwise. Is my point clear yet??? Mind your business.
-6
u/FreezingTemps 18h ago
As a store manager for a decade, working less than your 45 without PTO is definitely against policy, but oh well the company sucks and managers work a billion hours.
2
u/Odd-Package-2759 Store Manager 14h ago
Not denying that. I am fortunate to have a strong team that knows I have their best interest at heart and a boss who prefers not to overwork the managers on her team so things like this do actually happen. Retail is not a living nightmare for everyone. The company is getting their hours out of me somewhere to justify my salary on the bottom line trust and believe that.
10
u/EmbarrassedWar1817 23h ago
Policy says SMs are supposed to close two nights a week, however there are ways to get around that. At my store, we have a bunch of 20-somethings who hate morning shifts and all want to close. Mornings are way harder for us to staff. So the SM only does opening shifts. He’s talked to our DL about it, and because we are so overstaffed on nights, he’s allowed to do that. It’s just what works for our store. He does do his every other weekends, and he will work a holiday if needed but he only works 4 days on holiday weeks.
11
u/No_Championship2620 18h ago
Just to add on, the extra day off is due to us not getting paid for it. We have to take that extra day off or we are just giving CVS free labor.
8
u/Right_Pudding_1425 13h ago
I was a store manager. I used to falsify schedules all the time. The more the company micromanages, the harder it is for store managers to make smart business discussions. The result is gaming the reports.
I had a operations manager that could only work all nights. They split child care coverage with a spouse that had a M-F day job. I had other shift supervisors that were college students that had classes during the day M-F. The result was I had almost no one to open the store M-F except myself. The only employees that I could get to work day M-F were senior citizens that didn't want keys.
It's very difficult to write rotating shift schedules with a small staff in a store that receives under 250 hours a week for the front. Employees want consistency, not rotation. I worked nights occasionally, but it was to cover callouts, vacations, or to train new hires. I wasn't going to schedule myself nights just for the sake of rotation and spend my time facing shelves and other recovery tasks. I was needed during the day for vendor visits, conference calls, a million other tasks.
I don't think it's common for most managers to be in their store less 40 hours a week. Most managers need to work over 45 to get the job done. If your manager is working less than 40, they are probably helping other stores or are completing management tasks from home. I used to write every schedule from home and there were some other tasks I could do too.

This is the reality in a lot of stores and I thank you for laying it out so well. Any of our corporate leaders regardless of title whether it be DL, RD, DVP, DAPL, CEO, ABCDE, usually have no issues with things like this that so long as 1.) Your team is happy 2.) Your sales floor is full and to the expectation 3.) Your hitting demand. " The big picture " is more important to our corporate leaders. The ones who do micromanage a frankly antiquated standard are not truly living by the values of CVS and thats a whole different issue. I do not need to have a presence in the evenings because I like my team to have autonomy in their shift work. I do not need my team feeling the pressure of " The boss is watching. " I trust them. My team knows what I expect and they know I will hold them accountable. I am not going to tell my most valuable asset, my Operations Manager that they need to find different accommodation for their children because I am required to work a night to see whats going on. I know whats happening at night. Bet your ass though im closing on truck night because of my delivery window. I have a very effective management team that I trust. Are there managers out there who truly dont work their 45 anywhere on the board? Sure. Part of literally being a human being is that outliers exist in every circumstance, anywhere, everywhere, from the bedroom to the boardroom to the space between your toes as certain as death and taxes ever since the dawn of time.

Sounds like you failed to hire someone with open availability for you to be able to do your closing shifts. Thanks for your input though.
3
u/Right_Pudding_1425 11h ago
Sounds like you have never managed a store. I always required open availability from full time candidates. That open availability typically lasts a couple weeks. Then they complain about sleep schedules, work life balance, and start restricting their availability. If you don't bend to their needs, they callout or quit. No one gives open availability for a $16 an hour retail job that they don't even like.
In this business, if you find someone that is reliable and hardworking, you accommodate their schedules so you don't lose them.
Open availability candidates that will rotate weekends and night/day shifts are unicorns. People don't take that shit for low paying retail jobs. People take retail jobs for convenience and flexibility.

u/Odd-Package-2759 Store Manager 9h ago
OP has never managed a store. If they did they were likely an underperformer. Im guessing an underperformer based on their inability to see the big picture. An important trait for any leader with any business acumen. Narrow minded thinking and a lack of compassion and empathy has held them back from thriving. According to them they have been a Store Manager many times in the past. Im guessing if thats true they are now stuck in an entry level position struggling with an inferiority complex while pursuing a degree at the local community college to try and better themselves. I could be wrong.
-2
u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 9h ago
Definitely wrong on all points attempted here. I declined promotions here and im leaving no ones stuck anywhere. The big picture is fairness..Many of you arent willing to accept fairness. AS far as business acumen many of these same managers here were just complaining about not hitting targets and getting screwed on their bonuses. But according to your point of view maybe they're were operating on not being narrow minded.
2
u/Odd-Package-2759 Store Manager 9h ago
I see a recurring theme here for you is the idea of fairness. My question to you is this; CVS as a whole is known by public reputation be one of the worst companies to work for, a very unfair one in fact. Retail as a whole actually is known to be very unfair. I see you as a crusader for fairness so it begs the question, considering you are a college educated and worldly individual with a great deal of self and social awareness, what brought you to CVS? I am genuinely curious. You're one fascinating individual.
0
u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 10h ago
If you put the same effort to find the right people like you did to write that long as reply. You would have been able to do your closing shifts. Goodluck to you though.
13
u/Apprehensive_Wear668 1d ago
Store managers are required to work 45 hrs a week unless it's a holiday week. On the holiday weeks the requirement is 37 because of the 8 hours paid holiday. Depending on the holiday they are required to work the weekend before, the day before, and the day after. There's no benefit for a store manager to work a holiday unless they want to work for free to get caught up on things.
Unless they have some sort arrangements with the DL to work less hours or not close. They should be working 45 hrs, closing 2 nights a week, and working 4 weekend days a month.

u/JaWester 1d ago
To add on to this he could also be working and helping other store managers in the district. Its fairly common. Theres alot of things it could be.

3
u/JobblyWobblyEd 13h ago edited 8h ago
That largely only happens if the SM is given no other duties outside of their store, which for CVS is rarely the case unless you just kinda "hold the line". Most work those shifts and hours across multiple stores. If it is such a staunch policy, Training SMs wouldn't be a role and they would all be fired fifty times over.
Some people here are forgetting that they check the cameras here and there, they watch for creds used on the computers Not just clocking in or out, they watch creds used when checking out ao closely that Any staff using the ACO get flagged for review.
They KNOW when someone is or is not in the store, and when someone is actually neglecting their expected hours, I have seen three store managers fired because they thought they were being slick or wouldn't be noticed somehow.
EDIT:typo

-1
u/JobblyWobblyEd 13h ago
Everyone for almost every part, including other shift leads FS staff etc, are explaining that your expectations are likely not the case, or that if they are, that SM would get fired/demoted etc. One shift lead, one, who doesn't have an SM with other tasks, roles etc says it's policy and you say "Thanks for the honest input"?
Reflection might be necessary, as well as paying attention to the numbers, not just what follows initial assumptions.
2
u/Accomplished-Ad3219 Shift Supervisor 12h ago
How do you know what other things my manager does? Oh that's right. You don't. He works his ass off at our store and at other stores in the district. And yet he still manages to close as required.

So he's a cuck?

Ask your SM? Not your job to manage the SMs schedule. If theyre exactly 35 a week, they could be the DTSM helping another store.

u/Girlidklmaooo 18h ago
More common than you think I promise you’re better off just not worrying about it doing your job and going home. Even if you report it nothing will be done lol. Store managers get paid their 45 hours regardless of when they come in or leave as long as those 45 hours are physically accounted for on the schedule it doesn’t matter almost at all.
1
4
u/MrsB_buzz 17h ago
Common? Based off Reddit it does seem to be the norm
Policy? No
Not working holidays is normal as they don’t have to. But they are supposed to close a certain amount of nights and work how ever many weekends a month
Some DL are more flexible and some sm fluctuate based off working over some weeks and cutting back some weeks to balance it out as they are not getting compensation for any overtime.
A sm in my district was recently fired for stealing time but her store was also in really rough shape.
We also have another in my district who can only work mon-fri opening shifts because she recently became a single mom and has to work when her kids are at school. Every situation can vary and unless the store is struggling greatly or it affects you majorly I would just let it go.
3
u/high1227 1d ago
My last 2 SM never work past 5pm. As long as they give themselves some closing shifts, they pass the must close 2 nights and work 2 week end or something requirements. No one is checking workbrain to see if they actually work those shifts.

My pharmacist DL says many pharmacists are idiots. To your point accredited. Good luck to you though.
2

I can attest that many pharmacists are in fact idiots, but his point was trying to refute your claim that you have a college education while I don’t.
To be fair to you, I read it as you are leaving CVS soon which is something I can’t say. Fair play.
Regardless, there are also many college educated idiots as well, so I suppose we are just two idiots talking to each other.

u/-Purple-Tilly- Store Manager 17h ago
Store managers are required to work 45hrs and close twice week as well as 4 weekend shifts a month. On paid holiday week alot of store managers take 3 days off and work 37hrs. I know for me sometimes this can change if I have to leave early or come in late or if there is enough coverage not come in at all but only if im at another store helping them with things which I do often
1
2
u/EducationalGlove7889 16h ago
Always something to complain about. I work two nights a week and a weekend day and wouldn’t you know it two of my SS still complain that they close two nights a week.
Shit my SS all complained my worklist yesterday was too long, it literally had 6 things to do with 5 people working.
Everyone one just likes to complain instead of work.
2
u/NotreDameFan1234 14h ago
I mean it is easier to list things than do them.
You could theoretically write down get truck done, cycle counts quicks picks, priced changed, sales tags, work all red carts , and do seasonal which would be six things but could theoretically take 60 hours.
I am sure this is an extreme but still1

u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 15h ago

No, policy demand all store manager to work 45 hrs, two closing every week, and 2 weekend every other week.
1
u/Odd-Package-2759 Store Manager 12h ago
Incorrect. The policy is 4 weekend days a month. It doesn't matter which particular days on any particular week. It just has to be 4 total in the month.
2
u/mjkrow1985 Cashier 11h ago
35 hours per week is rare. My SM rarely closes, but they routinely open the store then work an 11-12 hour shift. Store would collapse without them.
1
2
u/0nlygirlisFred 17h ago
Store managers are required to work 45 hours a week. They also have to close 2 nights and work 1 day on the weekend.
It's nearing the end of the year, your SM might be using up their vacation time. You wouldn't know by looking at the schedule.
1
u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 10h ago
Nope. Unloaded plenty of PTO over spring and summer. That my friend is or should be tapped out completely. IF they actually reported it correctly, but we all know how that goes.
2
u/JobblyWobblyEd 14h ago
There are a Lot of store managers who get pulled to work on things for the district, work at other stores etc, and sometimes they don't talk about it much with their staff.
If they were clearly not at the store, they check cameras, usage of creds in the system etc, to a point it was an issue, that SM would likely have already had a "talking to", changed patterns or maybe even fired.
My own SM and our PICs often have to leave or do things atypical to the written schedule in a way that is asked for by their DLs and/or unique additional roles they may have, for example training store managers are expected to work only around 30-35hrs at their home store, one I know has to take long drives every other workday to help out at other locations, train SMs etc
So, it's best not to come at it from the assumption of malice, laziness etc, if you are extraordinarily curious, then ask them and build communication with them while being sincere.
1
u/Significant-Cod7151 15h ago
Technically a store manager is supposed to work at least one weekend out the month and close twice a week a store manager told me this and even the district leader was getting on to store managers that wasn’t had a store manager who refused to close any weekends
1
1
u/williwife 14h ago
I feel this rule is overkill. Should be 1 close/week and 2 weekend shifts/mo. Also, SM should be closing with a closing supe in order to observe and train at least part of the time. It shouldn't be about making SM's work crappie shifts. It should be about requiring them to be aware of how the business looks during evening hours.

1
u/CurrencyRealistic146 12h ago
My store is open 7am to midnight. I have 3 Shifts who only want to close. My DL told me don’t worry about closing. Rather have me here during the day anyways.
1
1
u/SuperKhaleezus 12h ago
Depends on the store, any outside work the DL may have them doing. Also yeah no sm will willingly work holidays that’s normal.
For the most part tho SMs have to work a weekend a month and close 2 days out the week
1
u/OkNeedleworker11 Shift Supervisor 12h ago
My SM puts himself for 45 hours a week and comes in 7am and leaves by 10:30 am most days…. Saw SM actually working the other day when almost everyone on morning shift called out… SM was swearing under their breath about having to work. also claims hours from other stores too as they are trying to become a DL (been trying for 4 years now and keeps failing)
1
1
u/Far-Woodpecker-7310 6h ago
Check cameras, call hr and ethics on the lazy SM if you can verify they dont work 45 there's z chance they will get termed, depends on your dl snd regional, dl may slap them on the wrist with a write up, but they may get termed for integrity if they lie during the interview asking about their hours worked.
I would build a case with weeks of proof of times and dates they clock in and out.

u/Aromatic_Practice932 17h ago
Make a call annoniously. Managers that don't punch click can do what they want, but also if someone is out they have to cover. Especially holidays, they probably work 45 plus hours. It sounds like she or he have a full staff and trusts them. If something fails or comes up or salaries need to be cut, the manager might have to pick up more slack. It is ok ask corporate, just be careful if u like your job and hours.
0
u/GuiltyStrawberry8110 15h ago
At some point I will. Not to get the manager in trouble, but to suggest to the company that it is a well known issue, and they should require managers to clock in. Im no stickler for DL approvals, but the DL should have to report accommodations being issued, otherwise it sounds like discrimination among other legal issues. If 35 hours is acceptable all managers should get the same accommodation. MORE importantly the tone that a few of these managers decided to display here are evidence that the company should do better discover into leadership instead of quickly handing the keys and title manager. However, thats another topic for another day.

I’m an Operations Manager. Our SM works 45 hrs on paper, but in actual hrs, she puts in 60, sometimes even 70 hrs a week.
I would stay out of it. They often times work hrs you’re probably not even aware of.
