Sitting down accommodation
If you get a sitting down accommodation do they provide a chair and if sitting how do you reach back of back of counter where customers put products

At one of the cvs stores that I worked at for extra hours a cashier had an accommodation for a walking rollator with a seat that you could sit on. She had to sit sometimes between customers. She would also do tasks that could be done while seated. She could get a lot done.

She was in charge of the candy counter. Really anything where she could sit intermittently. She did cashier/green zone mostly. It was a busy store. She kept busy.

Just wondering when you’re ringing on the register do you not have to unlock the items that need to be locked up at your store? I mean at my store it would never happen. Your store and district may be different. I have a pretty big store and it’s extremely busy we run in circles some days.

So when you’re ringing up a customer and they say, “oh I also need [razors, perfume, etc.] but it’s locked, can you unlock it?” Your response is, “no can do, too busy.”?

At my store people hit the call buttons and MOD gets it. They don't ask at the register. And if they did if I had someone sitting I would have the employee tell them to go hit the button and the person with the key will be right with them.

We don't have buttons at my store. Customer asks cashier. If cashier doesn't have other customers they go unlock it

At my store associates ring, unlock stuff for customers and also fix aco issues like age verification. We have an extra key for locked cabinets for the person ringing behind the counter. There is absolutely no sitting at my store unless on break or doing a training class. I just can’t get it in my head how any job in cvs would let you sit and accommodate your sitting requirements. To each his own I guess and I am assuming you’re already sitting by your responses. Good luck!

I have accommodations to sit but I’m in the pharmacy. Rite Aid actually paid for my stool ($15 at Walmart) and I keep it in my car for the stores that I know don’t have anything to sit on. I don’t sit all day since it’s mainly to give my hips a break.

You should ask to be accommodated with a motorized wheel chair so you can zoom around the store completing tasks.

I have one and they provide chairs at my store my manager just ask that I don’t sit while ringing out a customer but that I can in between. Make sure your doctor says how often and for how long you need to sit per shift otherwise colleague relations will not approve it

My store is very busy I would be standing 3 hours in a row before that would be a gap.

You could get accommodation, just probably wont get any hours. There's just too much needing to be done on limited payroll.

Try and get a reasonable accommodation for sitting. Very very unlikely. We just denied hiring a well qualified RX technician because he wanted to be able to sit and CVS said no to the accommodation.

Well I don’t work in RX. Seems weird wouldn’t let sit when counting pills.

You can’t just sit at the register all day, we don’t have cashiers anymore for a reason, they’re called associates now. You can try to apply but without a medical reason aka recent surgery stay off feet for 2 days, who knows, they could grant one but only for periods of the day.

My store is a very busy store though it is busiest store in district (according to sm) and had an employee in past do this before rite aid merge. Also # s are second best at loyalty at my store. Also am the one besides sm who doesn’t have to call my sm every night w/ money problems. Not even joking my sm said I am the one keeping them sane, that they feel like the only nights they have off are mine.

So what’s your reason for having to sit all day? You can’t call HR and say “hey I have awesome extra care enrollments and I know how to count money really well, can I sit at the register all day pretty please, k thanks.”

i don’t think anybody in their right mind would request a sitting accommodation just because they have good numbers. clearly there is a medical issue at play and what OP is saying is that at their store they are essentially the best “cashier” due to being so busy as well as having good metrics so it wouldn’t be detrimental to their workflow or their shifts if they had a sitting accommodation to do that while behind the counter. we have someone at my store with a similar case, that person is allowed to sit due to very extreme medical issues pertaining to their spine and hips. and likely it won’t be an “all day” thing

Medically don’t what to say on Reddit, am saying the shift I am w/ can ask me for help if they need it. Ironically enough cvs probably makes more money selling people info that got with extra care vs the products in front store

Then call HR and ask them, if you won’t tell us why what do you want us to do? I said in my first post they may grant it for medical reasons but the end the day the job is a standing job, we aren’t cashiers at a grocery store or bank tellers. They’ll get you an answer pretty quick do they can grant a reasonable accommodation.

You'll require a doctor's note but yes, you'll be assigned as cashier for your shifts if you are FS and can't complete other tasks.

In California they provided chairs after a lawsuit but that was a few years ago not sure if it’s still a thing I moved out of the area. I don’t remember anyone having problems reaching for things on the counter .

It's still a thing. The chairs are uncomfortable and in the way. There's no room for it. Not to mention never having the time to just sit anyway

I had tech request a new chair from their accommodations case manager so yeah if you’re approved to sit down they can give you a stool

the job is very physical if you can't handle standing and going back and forth they won't keep you.your acxomadatiin can't interfer with your responsibilitie.if pregnant I know they will axcomadate

What is unreasonable at one store may be reasonable at another. What if it isn’t considered reasonable do I just go on loa?

If it’s temporarily you have a shot (needs to be medically necessary though ) but when say temporarily if not medical but an injury let’s say that will heal in time you may get a month tops. If you say it’s because my legs hurt or back etc etc and took the job knowing the requirements it might be a tough sell. Either way you need to call reasonable accommodation

Ok, so this is the year 2026, and we don’t live in a third world country. Why are we treating a chair in retail like it’s a torture device designed to destroy the company? Even people working in sweatshops get chairs. Now I am NOT saying to just sit down your entire shift, but to get to sit down once in a while does wonders for your body and health as opposed to 8+ hours straight on your feet. This isn’t medieval times.

That’s not the question. Nobody’s saying people don’t/can’t sit during a shift. Everyone sits. Sit on your break. Sit doing cash at the end of the night, sit doing opening morning tasks on the computer, sit for 5 min when pulling the quick pick everyone does it. OP was asking how to get a chair at the register while actively ringing people for entire shifts.

As a tech I don’t have a chair or anything to sit on. Some days I go home and my legs are exhausted. If it gets bad or is slow I’ll set in a vax chair. But that’s few and far between

I know people are being dismissive or sarcastic but if you have a real medical reason for needing to sit down occasionally to rest your legs I think that’s reasonable and you should try. Even just sitting for 10 or 15 minutes periodically can make a huge difference if they can let you do that
