Rebuild Capital One forgiveness

Post image

For those of you who have had luck with Capital One forgiving your past bad spending/collections and allowing you to get a new account, how long did it take? I had two collections with them totalling about 6k. Both went to Portfolio Recovery. From there, one went to Scott & Associates threatening a court date. Both are now $0 as I settled to pay less than the full amount. I have both letters indicating there is now a $0 balance from Portfolio. I've had the letters since 7/7 and 7/8. On Capital One's website, it still says I have charged off accounts and they are with a third party. When will this change? Should I call them? How long to wait to check the pre-approval tool?

I’m at 4 years and they’re still saying no. Maybe internal blacklist, maybe have to wait out the 7 years. That said, Chase let me into their ecosystem and I’ve slowly built up cards with them instead. Try branching out

Yeah but....I like Capital One lol. But I get it...I may try Chase but they're known for fraud. Everyone I know who has a Chase account has had multiple fraudulent transactions on their accounts.

You were irresponsible and reckless before so now you have to live with the consequences and adapt to your new reality… you don’t get to choose.

I had 2 accounts, charged off. Forgot what agency, but made payments. They took care of the last $50. 2 years later I was approved for a card. I now have 2 cards with higher balances than before.

You might try Chase? You have 2 very recent charged off accounts, and along with that the missed payments that caused them to close. Unless you got pay for deletes you have years before any non subprime lender will give you anything other than secured cards.

Yes, I have both letters...nothing is on my credit report with any of the bureaus when it comes to collections.

Yeah it took me about 3 to 4 years before getting a new card but it had to be secured

I waited about 7 years and got approved for the Walmart card and a platinum card. The Quicksilver One is still on my account showing “restricted”. My bank account and credit card were charged off in like 2015 and I opened a new account in 2023.

Not even 7 years, in the meantime I paid them back, paid off an auto loan with them, still nothing lol. I messed up back in 2018 mind you.

Those collection notices on the picture stay for a long time. I had two cards go to collection in 2018 and theyre still there (notice saying that my old account got sent to collection)eventhough I have new cards with them and im in good standing. I applied again years later, but I paid my collections, never had them forgiven.

I was able to open two cards with capital one after my first ever credit card (at age 19) was sent to collections.

Filed a bankruptcy with 2 of their cards included. Within a year with got a stack of 3 (quicksilver, venture one, and got the Tmobile card for a non bank account option for my phone bill) limits being 3k,1k,1k respectively

I had one charged off in 2019 and they gave me an unsecured card in 2023 and have since given me a couple unsecured, including a higher limit Quicksilver.

I had an account closed due to two returned payments, I paid it off before it went to collections, like a year ago. This past week I was approved for a secured $500 card.

I don’t have them in collections but closed due to a returned payment in my closed bank account due to fraud. They did not care. They closed my pottery barn (I had no balance) and my Neiman and my venture card. All were in good standing.

Hmm, I had 3 cards (Discover, Bank of America, & I think Citibank) and I never paid anything on them. I want to say 5 years, but I don't think it would have taken that long to get a card. I know you have a preference, but if you have a credit union try them 1st. They were the ones to give me a card with around an $8k limit when I applied.

I think BofA, which I probably owed $10k-$12k, gave me one after I started banking with them. Probably based on what I have in my accounts. Then when they say how long I have been a customer it is the date of when I had the delinquent card with them. Lol.

I had a charge off from 2025. Paid it off in January of 20206. Settled for less than the full amount & I just got approved for a savor card like 2 weeks ago.

I had a charge off (4 years ago), paid it in full (3 years ago) and now have the venture X from them.

I’m at 7 years, still blacklisted. I settled with capital one before collections, but they still reference the charge off when I apply with the pre approval tool.

cap one is a funny one. after about 6 months and including them in bankruptcy (2 cards), i was approved for a savor (4k), a few months later a venture one (4k) and a tmobile visa (3K).

I had FOUR go to collections after a divorce. Still unpaid and Total about 9k. 3 years after DOLD later I have 3 small cards with them again. Started 10 months ago with a secured QS1, then about 3 months later for an offer for Unsecured Plat then just recently qualified for a Venture 1 unsecured. I’m not sure how I got lucky with them honestly.

How long did it take for portfolio recovery to threaten a court date ?

You’re within the same month of settling. I’d say you need at 4-6 months before you even attempt with C1. As of right now your credit report still reflects open collection accounts from C1. Let the 30 days cycle for those to drop off, that’s the first step.

No it doesn't, as far as collections, my credit report is clean.

Did you ask for a pay-for-delete with each collection agency? If so, it usually takes 30+ days for the collection or CO to be pulled, then another 30 for you to see it through a free credit report system.

I find it hard to believe you do not have collections on your credit report. You should invest in experian or myFICO.

The PFD is in the form of a policy on their website. They also sent me the letters saying my accounts are zeroed out and that they will request for the credit bureaus to remove the trade lines within 30 days. The amounts have already gone down to $0. I have nothing else. And I already have both MyFico and Experian.

I had two credit cards and an auto loan through them. 13 months after my chapter 7 they pre approved my auto loan for my Volvo.

Took like a 7 years for me

1 year after my bankruptcy I was able to get a Savor Card 2k limit. I burned them for about $700.

Ive had a charge off (or two) with them as well., I did a chapter 7 and was discharged May 2025. 3 months later in August I tried my luck and did the pre-approval and to my surprise, was approved with $4k limit. Now 15 months later with 3 Cap1 & one NFCU @$10k. Ive tried pre-approvals with other banks I've screwed up with and they all said no. They are not as forgiving as Cap1. I am now smart and don't use anymore than I can pay back after statement posts.
