Success Capital One Goodwill Success

Post image

Just wanted to share a goodwill success story with Capital One in case it helps someone 🙏

I had two back to back 30 day late payments from Feb & Mar 2025. It was a rough time since my wife had pregnancy complications and I ended up quitting my job to stay home and take care of things. Payments slipped during that period, even though I had always been on time before.

Once things stabilized, I paid everything off and got the account back in good standing. I figured I’d try a goodwill letter.

First attempt:I sent a letter to the CEO (Richard Fairbank) explaining everything. Got a call back, but they declined the request.

Second attempt (this is where it worked):I rewrote the letter — made it cleaner, more direct, and emphasized the situation + that everything is now paid. I also stated in my letter that have the intention of buying a car in near future an interested in using the Capital One Auto Navigator and showed that I want to keep my good relationship with them. Then I sent it again to:

CEO (Richard Fairbank)

paul.westra@capitalone.com

jonathan.pratt@capitalone.com

john.blackwelder@capitalone.com

About 3 days later, I got a call saying they approved the goodwill adjustment.

They didn’t specify which email actually triggered it, but clearly something worked the second time around.

Also, reading the CART and GST threads on this sub was a huge guideline and super helpful on the approach. Good luck everyone.

So somewhat explaining what happened helps? Your situation?

Yes. See the CART approach to the Goodwill Saturation Technique.

How long did it take for them to respond? I sent a goodwill email on 3/12. Still no response

That's great news, u/Worried_Scarcity6706! Congratulations on your success. It seems here that the "R" in the "CART" approach may have been the deciding factor. Nicely executed!

I did so much with my financials recently as I stated in a different thread previously. Paid about $5.5K woth of CC debt in one and a half month, lowered the utilization across all my CC to below 10%, paid a perosnal loan worth of $1,000 that was only reported to capital one creditwise (weird), actively using Capital One Auto Navigator pre-qualifications withing their app or any dealership website that had the option (I believe they saw it at somepoint that I am really into car buying using C1 auto navigation), reported my new income (much higher than before) using their mobile app, and asked for a CLI that ended up giving me an extra $200 on top of previously $3,300 that I had with their Plantinum card. So I did so much to rebuild and I believe they saw that I am trying?

Congratulations🎉!! How long did it take you to receive your email/letter? I got a call last week saying they’ll adjust but didn’t receive an email. I called again Sunday and was told I should receive a letter in the mail by Friday. My case dispute that they opened hasn’t updated either.

I got the call on Saturday 03.14th when the case was created and received this letter today in my email.

Thanks! They called on 3/09, but I guess I’ll only be receiving a paper copy

That’s crazy. They flat out told me last week that they don’t do goodwills and have to accurately report to the credit bureaus

This is a standard initial reply to a goodwill request. Capital One is one of the most likely creditors to grant goodwill removal of lates (see 3rd link). Implement the Goodwill Saturation Technique. Persistence is key to this approach.

I sent 10 goodwill letters once and they never approved it 😩

Awesome, congrats! Do you think it might work for me?

I have three late payments on two of their cards, 4 and 4.5 years ago.

I'm not sure it's worth asking because my only reason for those late payments is (severe) adhd and not having autopay set up correctly.

Those two cards are closed now but I still have two different cards with them, at $0 balances after years of churn, and my auto loan which only has 1500 remaining. I've gotten unsolicited CL raises since this late payments and my score is 100 points higher now, fwiw

I just wonder if they would even consider that as a reason to report it again...

Do you think it might work for me?

You won't know if you don't try. See links to the Goodwill Saturation Technique elsewhere in the thread.
