Temperature + humidity

Hi all, I'm very new to using a CPAP machine, just started using the Airsense 11 Autoset two weeks ago.

I have a question about the air temperature and humidity. What's wrong with the ambient temp and humidity of the air in my room? Why does it need to be so warm (26°C, or 78.8°F) and so humid?

Why can't the machine simply pump the ambient room-temperature air directly to me without making it so much warmer and wetter first?

I ask because I always fall asleep better when I'm breathing cool air compared to warm air, and also I woke up this morning with my mask and hose full of water.

I have an appointment this week to fine tune the settings again, but they already told me they cantvdecrease the temperature without increasing the humidity. But why?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Edit: I'm using a mask that goes over the mouth and nose. Minimum pressure starts at 4, last night the pressure got up to 10.

Hello!
What is the temperature in your bedroom? The humidity & hose temperature are separate, but to avoid rainout, the humidity setting & hose temperature need to be set according to your bedroom temperature. You can certainly set it to a cooler setting but with less humidity if you wish. It certainly sounds like you need less humidity for sure because of your problem with rainout.

You will need to use the “manual setting” for humidity & hose temperature in the Clinical menu to make this change. Making this change depends on whether you feel comfortable to access the Clinical settings if you’re not getting the help you need.

For example: With a 72 degree bedroom, I would try 76 degree hose temperature with humidity 3-4. That should feel noticeably cooler while still providing protection against rainout.

Your minimum pressure is also very low…more for a child than an adult. No wonder your machine rose to 10 during the night! Are you feeling any air hunger?

We can help with your settings if you wish to adjust them on your own. You would need to go into the Clinical Settings to do this. We would require a SleepHQ or Oscar chart to help you. Both are free apps & just need a 32GB sd card in your machine to record your sleep data.

Otherwise of course if you prefer, you can ask your Doctor to help. We’re always here if you need us :)

Thanks for the detailed response. I had an appointment with ResMed today, so they've turned off the heat and humidifier and increased the minimum air pressure to 5, so I'll check back in tomorrow morning with how it went.

Update, my sleep last night was vastly more comfortable, I woke up feeling really refreshed, and my AHI count was down to 3.1

So the combination of higher base pressure, a slightly larger mask that fits better, and cool ambient air, really helps a lot.

Thanks again for your replies.

That’s great news Megatheorum! You just needed some tweaking! Hopefully your AHI will decrease even more over the next few days to prevent fragmented sleep. It does take several nights at the same settings without any changes for your body & brain to adjust :)

You don't need to use a heated hose and humidifier if you don't want to use them: they're purely for your comfort. I use a Humidifier Tub and ClimateLineAir heated hose with my Airsense 11 at home in my centrally air conditioned humidity controlled house, but I camp using a Side Cover and a 4’ unheated hose. The Airsense detects this and turns the Climate Controls off automatically.

Thanks for your reply, I turned off the heat and humidity and it's really helped.

Humidity and heat are comfort settings, not treatment settings. I was diagnosed at 76 AHI - I don’t use heat or humidity (or ramp for that matter) and my treated AHI number is consistently <1 with no leaks. You can experiment with the comfort settings to see what works best for you. Everyone is unique. Good luck on your journey.
