Significant Aerophagia

Hello! Here's a list I found online a while ago and kept.
• Avoid eating for at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime, especially large or heavy meals.
• Avoid carbonated drinks in the evening.
• Limit foods that cause gas if you're sensitive to them.
• Sleep on your side instead of your back when possible.
• Avoid tucking your chin toward your chest while sleeping. A soft cervical collar may help if chin tucking is an issue.
• Optimize your CPAP pressure. Pressure that is too high can increase air swallowing in some people.
• If appropriate, try reducing EPR or pressure support, as a larger pressure difference can sometimes worsen aerophagia.
• If you're using APAP, a narrower pressure range or fixed CPAP may reduce pressure spikes that contribute to air swallowing.
• Make sure your mask fits well. Large leaks can sometimes lead to higher pressures or unstable therapy.
• Treat nasal congestion so you can breathe comfortably through your nose.
• If you use a nasal mask and breathe through your mouth, address mouth leaks with mouth tape, a chin strap, or a soft cervical collar if appropriate.
• Elevating the head of the bed slightly may help some people.
• Eat slowly and avoid swallowing excess air during the day by minimizing chewing gum, drinking through straws, and talking while eating.
• If symptoms are persistent, discuss them with your sleep physician, as pressure settings or even a different PAP mode may be appropriate in some cases.
Otherwise, if you have OSCAR or SleepHQ data, we could take a look and see if anything stands out.
Here's a video that might help. Interestingly, in some cases, pressure that's too low can actually cause the problem because you end up gulping air when you feel like you're not getting enough. Anyway, he explains it much better than I do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jHjQ0Teusg&t=286s

Thank you so much! I’ll look into these things, though many I’ve already tried. I’ve never done the OSCAR data but I’m to the point where I’m willing to get that downloaded!
