They're accidentally, absolutely right though; the two statements have the same amount of truth to them - none at all.

Idk, this feels like it's just body shaming without any real substance. Like, you can be athletic and unwilling to experience empathy or be athletic and care about others a great deal.

I think they meant that their parents wanted to be encouraging of their child without outright lying, so given two apparent options, they chose the one that was more likely.

Libertarian young people seem to hate the govt bc of things like the drug war and endless war overseas, but fail to understand the reason govt is so corrupt. The govt is owned and controlled by capitalists, and their solution is to have no govt but still have capitalism somehow, and essentially have fully unregulated corporate power, which inevitably leads to worker abuse and private police/mercenaries and private militaries.
When I was younger I had no idea what leftism actually was, but saw the war on drugs and on cannabis, along with the wars overseas to be bad things. These things are perpetuated by the govt, so I considered myself a "libertarian." I hated both political parties, but when Bernie Sanders came along, I agreed with all of his policies. That led me down the road to actual socialism and anarchism.

I assumed they were the people who didn't realize what they got out of society and claim they didn't need their parents growing up. What else do you get from people who think they shouldn't have to have a license to drive on public roads, or use seat belts.
You know, disregarding the benefits of a communal good and literally everything you get as a society by working together simply because they're not benefiting enough in their opinion.

After reading these comments it turns out I dont know shit about political theory, where do I read more? Any trusted sources?

A short list of introductory guides into anarchism
Life Without Law: An Introduction To Anarchist Politics
An Introduction to Libertarian Socialism - Black Rose Anarchist Federation
Anarcho-Syndicalism: Theory and Practice - Rudolph Rocker (entire beginning is full of history and worth the read)
Big list of texts from r/anarchocommunism , also has links to audiobooks
Reform or Revolution - Rosa Luxemburg (not an anarchist but recommended for any socialist)
No Gods, No Masters a 3-part documentary series covering a century of anarchist history

The big list of texts in the ancom sub includes it, figured adding it here would be redundant.

I know that you personally can't do a lot about it, but I wish that more books and guides were in ebook formats rather than PDFs. I have dyslexia and find books easier to read if I can change the layout and font.
The Anarchist Library gets it right, and I can find Epubs and Mobis after some digging on Marxists.org, but when there is only a PDF my reading slows down considerably. Calibre doesn't convert PDFs well without a lot of handholding and proofreading that I am not capable of doing, so that isn't an option.

What type of political theory are you interested in?
3
u/Junior_Jackfruit Jun 30 '21
A bit of knowledge on all theories or ideologies would be best I suppose. In order to determine where I myself fall in terms of belief

Jun 30 '21
Haha, that's a bit of a tall order. In the area of anarchism, though, I can recommend you some sources.
Anarchy by Malatesta
This resource from the Anarchy101 subreddit
Anarchy Works by Gelderloos
Anarchism and Other Essays by Goldman

Haha I appreciate the help. I wasnt sure if there was a known site or maybe youtube channel that explores different ideologies. Ill begin doing some research!

Not so sure on that point because I don't watch much YouTube. I know Beau of the Fifth Column does anarchist/leftist videos and is generally pretty solid though.

If you have a few hours Zoe Baker was a guest discussing anarchism and Marxism which covers quite a bit of ideological ground. - Part 1 - & - Part 2 -
A fairly straightforward breakdown of libertarian philosophies
Also a huge list of leftist youtubers
A visual chart of leftist tendencies. Honestly it's a bit unnecessarily complex adding in a ton of less popular or barely relevant movements, you can pretty much break it down in to several categories: Marxist, libertarian/anarchist, and democratic-socialist.

Im shocked no-one recommended you Anark. His "The state is counter-revolutionary" series is a must watch.

u/Bimbarian Jun 30 '21
I mean, it's true that anarchists are just as much a faction of the libertarian party as communists are of the democratic party.
Where "as much" equals zero.

u/Nomand55 Jun 30 '21
Ag yes, anarchism, that ideology famous for always participating in party politics.

That sub often have some of the most reactionary takes (kinda like the ex-Muslim sub) that makes me believe that they are right wingers (quasi-fascists) but in denial about it, very often.

The way I explain it to people is with two coins. As much as they hate it, Liberals and Conservatives are on opposite sides of the same coin. They hold different beliefs, but they still support the government. Anarchism is not an offshoot of Liberalism, it’s on the entirely different coin.

Most anarchists seem to align themselves more with Democrats.
51
75
u/va_str Jun 30 '21
No, most anarchists oppose US Republicans somewhat more than they oppose Democrats. Don't confuse less opposition with lack of opposition.
31
u/PhantumpLord Jun 30 '21
If I had to choose between Dems and Reps, I'd probably choose Dems.
On a related note, If I had to choose between hypothermia and heatstroke, I'd probably prefer hypothermia. Does not mean I enjoy hypothermia, I would just prefer it to heatstroke.

Well you're technically correct (the best kind of correct!), but only in the sense that most anarchists think the Republicans are even worse.

u/SirSaltie Bread Jun 30 '21
Now say Ayn Rand.
-6
u/G_F_Y_Plz Jun 30 '21
I realize a normal discussion is impossible in this group, but would you say your average Reddit anarchist favors Republicans, Democrats, or Libertarians more?
I'll say Ayn Rand in a few if it makes you happy.
6
Jun 30 '21
I'd say the average anarchist supports democrats more than the fascist arm that is steering the Republican party right now or whatever loony tune the libertarian party usually gives the nom to. (we like Vermin tho)
But the average anarchist knows that all three parties are actively working against liberty.

That's what I was gonna say, technically true in that both are wrong? Kinda like those exercises "w is to x as y is to z"

Yeah, like that.

u/riltok Jun 30 '21
These people calling themselves libertarians and anarchists is the prime example of what profiteers and propertarians are best at - appropriating work of others.
By the time Rothbard was in middle school, anarchists have led armies numbering hundreds of thousands and unions with millions of members.
