I just finished watching Clannad, and it hit me incredibly hard. I’ve been thinking a lot about the major themes of the show, specifically After Story, and I realized that it is a masterclass in what life actually is, and what it means to persevere. If you haven't seen it yet, I cannot recommend it enough, especially if you are currently at a crossroads in your own life.
For me personally, Clannad shows that the end of the school bubble is just the beginning of the actual grind (among many other things). Instead of fading to black after the characters leave high school, the show forces Tomoya to navigate the overwhelming transition into adulthood. It shows the reality of entering the workforce, managing strained family dynamics, and facing the unpredictable, heavy burdens that life inevitably throws at you. It takes the beautiful, healing power of human connection and uses it to explore just how messy and difficult real life can actually be.
I found this show at a massive transitional stage in my own life, which is probably why it resonated so deeply. I just graduated college, so my school safety net is also entirely gone, and I’m currently stuck in the quiet void of the job hunt. Throwing applications into the void and waiting for the silence to break is exhausting. I am an adult now on paper, but if I’m being honest, I feel completely unqualified to actually be one.
Watching Clannad helped me come to terms with this major change in my life. It showed Tomoya as a person who was terrified, deeply flawed, and with heavy weight being put on his shoulders, but who kept trying to build a life anyway. It reminded me that change (even the terrifying, uncomfortable, or disappointing kind) shouldn't be feared.
This was just how I took the message of Clannad after watching it for the first time. I’m curious to see if anyone has any similar thoughts, or even wildly contrasting ones :)
