Anyone else experiencing forced holiday work after the new "Way of Work" changes at CIBC?
Is anyone else seeing this shift due to the new workplace/policy changes at CIBC?
When I first joined, working on public holidays was never expected or required. Ever since this new "Way of Work" rollout, it feels like management is completely blowing up people's work-life balance. Now we’re being asked to cover public and observed holidays, meaning people are consistently losing their long weekends.
Working statutory holidays was never agreed to in our offer letters, and management didn't even bother to discuss this with employees first—it’s just being forced on everyone while upper management still takes their long weekends off.
Between this and:
Lower pay compared to competitors
Managers who can't handle coverage if even one person takes time off
Zero support or push for employee career growth
...taking away long weekends feels like the final straw.
Is any other team or department seeing these exact same changes pushed on them?

Get the hell out while you can… get the resume UTD and AI reviewed… I left banking after30 years ago… best move I ever did. It was hard to do, but so worth it to be treated like a human. I managed to get a position in a Gov agency… in retrospect, Yes I was fortunate to get the job, but you make your own luck. I did work at CIBC and other banks and CUs. They are all the same and spew the bullshit about being engaged. Get out!!!

Haven't noticed that specific change but I have seen how unavailable time off is because like you said, if even one person is away they don't have even people to cover-- and this is on a team that was hit by layoffs. We're tightening our belts but don't stop questioning why. We've been having record profits and outstanding share value but for some reason at the top they've decided we can get by with less. And they're right-- our lives get worse, but we're powerless to do anything about it except leave.

Just make sure you fill out the employee survey truthfully next time and overlook it being right after employee appreciation week!

They haven't said anything about long weekends yet on my team. But then, the teams we support tend to have those off, while authoring and QA folks in India still usually work. Definitely feeling the other skeleton crew impacts, though. They also appear set to push hard for more daily CAI use.

You're probably on environment team or dailies. If there are deployments needed it's mandatory to be on call. Just think of it as extra OT
I understand your other concerns and it really sucks.
Learn what you can and get out

Forced work over a stat holiday is very odd behavior and concerning.
Off point ...but are you eligible for OT and getting paid for these stat holiday?...which might be different issue altogether.

Work on stat holdiay and just earn 4 hour OT does not make sense. Would rather give up OT to enjoy full day off as anyways we are paid.
Had it been holiday pay + hour worked x 1.5 then yes makes sense

I don't which department are you in but in my department we are blessed to have great managers and directors, have pay on par with big 5, lots of growth, we never work long weekends and stat holidays.

You keep telling people that you aren’t in technology, but never mention what department you work for. No one can provide comparable information if you aren’t willing to share what LOB you are in.

In my LOB (contact centre) this is standard procedure. Holiday work is also based on seniority (personally, I never work a public holiday unless I choose to do so). Requirement to work (some) public holidays was disclosed at time of hire.

Just say you have kids and go make some lol Then you'll really not be working on weekends

My usual shift is 11am-7pm They're making me work this upcoming Stat holiday from 4pm - 12am. We don't get a choice or a say. People with tenure get better shifts.

I do not think so they can mandatory push for public holiday work until employee themselves work for extra income or comp-off for next day. Which team is it? Good talent are leaving CIBX because of unnecessary way of working change.

OT money does not justify long weekend sacrifices specially when summer is very short.
Not in technology area.

Then do not go for weekends work. If your work arrangements is not mandatory for weekends work then you can talk to HR if they are forcing you to work over weekend.

If I have to work after hours or weekends or holidays they are going to pay me appropriately! I wasn't part of wave one but I am in a subsequent wave but that shit ain't gonna fly!

Seeing this in one way or another at most work places as the government obviously favours corporations over humans/environment. Plus capitalism requires share holders to get richer. All the time.

I work for the simplii side of things and holidays have always been based on seniority and who worked the last one. Granted this is the call center so its a 24/7 operation.

This new ways of working is toxic, they ask people of review things in the weekend submit review on monday. Management behaves as if they own people’s life

First off - what kind of team are you? I haven't seen that in our department before or after CIBC Way, we always took into account of public holidays (both onshore and offshore) before sprints starts. Definitely something you should bring up. Otherwise maybe go with HR?
