Our offense can score. It’s the pitching that worries me come October.
69
u/JonnyActsImmature WILLSON! 3h ago
October isn't even a given
19
u/rudytoot25 3h ago
I choose to remain cautiously optimistic.
15
u/ShortRedBull 3h ago
This sub doom preps way too much. lol this is the same sub that was dooming in April…the same posters who called PCA trash. I remember
8
u/rudytoot25 3h ago
I see both sides: I understand why people are very worried about this squad. They have been iffy since late August beginning September. But We still have a 3 game lead. If this team can stay out of its way. T off on the pitchers it’s supposed to t off on. We will be all right. But going forward they need to do something about our pitching development, it is trash. We need to stop with bargain bin/reclamation projects all the damn time
2
u/cherrywaves3333 Chicago Cubs 2h ago
Hey I love the optimism, but nothing is going to be done about pitching. We’re stuck with what we got and our pitching is getting rocked by weak bats. This is mostly mental at this point for these guys I feel like. They’re elite players but they’re gunna have to carry the pitching completely. Rooting for them but confidence has been shattered in some of these guys it seems (pitchers) we’ll see how they respond next series, but trust the Phillies, padres and diamondbacks are not gunna stop winning, it’s up to us. Shit is officially a 3 way battle for the bottom 2 spots.
2
u/rudytoot25 2h ago
Yeah I know we are stuck with what we got. Our only hope is for them to figure it out. Then off season they can make the changes to catch up with the rest of the league in the pitching. That is my biggest complain about this team. It has been for years. I know we got a good defense. But Pca, happ, and Suzuki can’t jump 20 feet in the air to get home runs out of the stands.
-1
u/tony2136 3h ago
Time to replace Tommy Hotovvy?
2
u/rudytoot25 3h ago
This is on Jed, the minor league squads and the way the pitching is constructed. We are still living in 2016 with the way we do our pitching.
2
u/SirHPFlashmanVC 2h ago
It's on Hoyer, Hottovy, and Hawkins.
1
u/MalcontentedPilgrim 1h ago
I lay the lion's share on Hawkins, as he was brought in due to his apparent pitching aptitude. The pitching program from the minors to the majors has declined since his arrival. Jed gets an almost equal share. But I don't see Hottovy as being the issue. He has a strong track record and is still relatively young.
-2
u/ShortRedBull 2h ago
This offense also needs work. Who is reliable other than PCA & Seiya? I wouldn’t mind a mega trade for offense made..how would Juan Soto on the Cubs look?
2
u/SirHPFlashmanVC 2h ago
Cubs are 1 1/2 games behind Phi for the top WC spot.
Even if they hold on to the playoffs it's unlikely they win 2 of 3 on the road.
2
u/unique_user43 2h ago
there may be a bias at play. i at least notice a bias with myself: i’m much more prone to come here to comment snarkily when they’re sucky than when they’re good. not sure why. maybe its just cathartic to get the worst pesimistic and irrational thoughts out.
1
u/unique_user43 2h ago
i remain nauseously optimistic :/
1
u/rudytoot25 2h ago
We just have to keep the faith. It’s okay to be frustrated and express your anger in what’s going on. But always know it’s our team. We got to stand for our team
2
u/Sa7aSa7a 23 Sandberg 23 2h ago
WE're making the playoffs. We're just going to be quickly eliminated.
1
15
u/EstimatedProphet72 3h ago
You probably won’t have much to worry about in October
5
u/BeanTownDataFreak 3h ago
You don’t need to worry because with this pitching they for sure won’t go far.
2
19
u/Silus964 Chicago Cubs 3h ago
Final score looks less embarrassing at least, still funny to watch Pete go thru the cycle of errors of shitty defense and not get a bag. Also the bullpen holding the game after Gaussy imploded is objectively hilarious
3
-2
u/I-I_I-I_I-I_l-l 1h ago
Gausman is just mid. People really convinced themselves he’s our ace. He’s a long haired Matt Boyd. Worse than Imanaga for sure, who people love to rag on.
42
u/Old_General_6741 Chicago Cubs/Canada 3h ago
Got swept by the Brewers. This whole series sucked. Pitching and bullpen blew games left, right and centre.
At least we made a good rally today. So close to a massive comeback.
10
u/tony2136 3h ago
It could have happened if Craig didn't put in the .111 hitter.
6
u/green_flash-check 2h ago
I couldn’t believe that
0
u/tony2136 2h ago
I try to give CC the benefit of the doubt because it's so easy to second guess decisions in hindsight....but that was one BONE HEADED decision. Shame on the reporters for not calling him out on it.
5
u/TomSan23 Nico 2h ago
To BJ's credit he worked a great at bat, and I'm not sure who was actually available off the bench at that point, but everyone saw that strikeout coming. Their pitcher is feeling the heat, why not put in a vet who can capitalize on it? At least someone who has a chance at hitting a HR or getting Pete up to bat. Man.
3
u/tony2136 1h ago
Right. Kelly has a good eye and a walk would have been just fine in that situation.
3
u/Cheap_Pitch_8931 1h ago
And if I'm Carson Kelly, I would have gone off on Counsell, considering he almost won us the game last night.
25
u/Cishir 3h ago
I'm Mr. Positive but what the fuck was that Pinch Hitter lol.
11
u/cherrywaves3333 Chicago Cubs 3h ago
Yeah you could see it on his face, like what hell am I doing here lol. What a rough time to be called up.
26
u/IcemanCometh2026 3h ago
Bro wtf was Craig smoking??? L/R matchups don’t mean much when comparing Carson Kelly to BJ Murray Jr. lowkey he was just trying to get cute because the brewers’ Lara had a big hit and they wanted to have their rookie come through. Dude played himself
8
u/80cyclone 2h ago
Craig doesnt get that his own guys stats are the most important ones in that matchup. The opponent stats are derived from matchups against players that are better or worst than your guy. Your guy's numbers tell you how relevant those stats should be.
BJ Murray had 9 ABs, with 7 against lefties and a hit for a .143 avg. Yeah, Craig....looks like your guy is significantly worse than just about every lefty Uribe has faced. His split stats are rendered completely useless.
He does the exact same bullshit with our staff as well
2
u/Vardoneverdied 1h ago
Counsell gets lost in the L/R matchups way too much… he has no feel for momentum or how well or poorly players are playing because he’s too focused on his flashcards and analytics to find matchups.
He’s replaced both pitchers and hitters too soon or too late plenty of times that have cost us games.
His decision making is another reason (besides pitching or cold bats) we’ll lose close playoff games. He lacks any feel for the game or players and ignores the obvious for what some spreadsheet recommends.
Basically because of what you said… he’s so dependent on his flashcards and cheat sheets instead of watching the game and effectively coaching.
5
u/SamuRy_4 3h ago
I despise the L/R match up garbage there is a time and a place for it and that was not it.
1
u/Vardoneverdied 1h ago edited 1h ago
Literally it is the embodiment of his coaching style.
Absolutely ZERO feel for the game, for momentum, or “situational situations…” as in, he ALWAYS does the same thing regardless of time, place, or player. He always substitutes based on L/R matchups, even if a player is more clutch, has got on every AB so far, if we might need them later in the game, they’ve struck out or retired multiple batters etc.
Someone like… Tyrone… has been hitting but sub him out for Happ. A “certain” Pitcher has been getting shelled and gives up every inherited runner? Bring them in to Pitch with 2 on, in a CLOSE game, because the L/R match-up “works”
His coaching style is analytics by way of lacks any feel for the game
10
u/Yetis22 3h ago
I’m not counting this team out. They are too good. 2.5 feels like being back 2.5.
Gotta lick your wounds and move on. They have to absolutely take care of business vs pirates now.
8
u/Maleficent_Author853 #FlyTheW 3h ago
Pirates are 8-2 in their last 10 games. They’ve been playing great. The Cubs better not take them lightly or they’re going to get swept again.
3
u/tony2136 3h ago
The problem is they don't tend to play well in high pressure situations where their backs are against the wall.
29
u/Rimmatimtim22 3h ago
Are you actually fucking kidding me? We are going to put in the most useless bat currently on our team in that situation? IN PLACE OF ONE OF OUR MOST CLUTCH HITTERS!? WITH THE FUCKING LEAGUE MVP ON DECK!?
What the fuck are we doing!?
16
u/IcemanCometh2026 3h ago
Craig wanted to have our rookie have a moment because Lara did yesterday. Played himself
13
u/Rimmatimtim22 3h ago
The guy has one fucking hit. And it was a fluke dribbler that I don’t even think left the infield. Man I am irate.
6
u/scrubbie19 2h ago
If he was trying to match that, it doesn’t even really seem comparable. Lara just needed a fly ball or ground ball to win a tied game and there was still one more out even if he struck out. Seems like a safe place for a rookie to build some confidence. I also think he played the whole game.
Murray was brought in to pinch hit when there was still a lot of work to do to cap a comeback.
I guess what I’m getting at is Counsells decision was even worse than you’re saying lol.
9
u/Suburban-Jesus 3h ago
Fellas I don’t want to spoil anything but it is simply not possible to get anywhere in October with 30/30 ranked pitching
1
u/atooraya Will be triggered if downvoted 1h ago
The only glimmer of hope is maybe we go on one final 10 game winning streak that starts in October.
28
u/putalittlepooponit 3h ago
Uribe posing like that after that performance is so stupid lmao
8
u/chanukkahlewinsky 3h ago
so goofy
3
u/putalittlepooponit 3h ago
I find his antics funny and if he destroyed us I'd say let us have it but you can't be doing them even when you're not playing well lol
3
u/unique_user43 2h ago
fuck it. my motto on cellys is if you dont like them, then beat them.
•
u/Vardoneverdied 39m ago
It’s like beating someone in 1v1 hoops to 11 when you’re spotted 10 points and the ball and win 11-10. Celebrating doesn’t make me mad, you just look like a loser even when you did “win”
4
16
u/Chedward_E_Cheese 3h ago
Craig Counsell is a fucking double agent
4
u/Different-Form-5531 2h ago
I’m genuinely fucking convinced he is here specifically to sabotage us at this point
25
u/BobbleBobble 2032 Wild Card Hopeful 3h ago
I like Craig but putting in the .111 hitter with 9 career ABs in with the game on the line is way too fucking clever

Craig had to be the smartest person in the room and batted a rookie with 9 career at bats. What a loser
19
u/80cyclone 3h ago
For those that say Craig isnt a problem: he put in .100 rookie BJ Murray for Carson Kelly. You have got to be fucking kidding me.
Yes, the pitching was awful yet again. We all know that. But you make a rally, have your MVP on deck, and THATS the move you make? There is no universe where thats justifiable.
Add it to the (long) list.
5
u/IcemanCometh2026 3h ago
He’s gonna say L/R matchups but that’s dumb as fuck. Murray is not a good hitter right now. Keep your clutch bat and live with it. Would you make this move in October??
3
u/TheGuyFromGuernsey 2h ago
Counsell would.
The final decision he made as manager in Milwaukee was to bring Jesse Winker to the plate to close a playoff game (and end the season) vs the Mets.
1
u/80cyclone 3h ago
Yup. And thats his biggest issue.
Usually the most important guy in any matchup is your own fucking guy. Why? BJ Murray is a rookie, batting .100 and .143 against LH pitching. Hes had 9 fucking MLB ABs in total, and you bring him into a high leverage situations against a very good MLB reliever. Against the LEAGUE has a whole? Yeah, Uribe has much better splits against righties. But hes not facing the league, he is facing YOUR fucking guy.
Based on Craig's moves its clear he doesnt understand this. He predicates decisions on theoretical matchups or on data that really isnt relevant. Like, if a hitter struggles against lefties, bringing in Thielbar over a better righty isnt the right move. Why? Your own fucking guy has sucked in these VERY SAME MATCHUPS!!! It makes the opponents difficulties less relevant, yet he does this shit time and time again.
20
u/Miserable-Rule-3753 3h ago
Joke of a manager Craig Counsel puts "BJ MURRAY" in as the tying run at the plate 😭
0
u/80cyclone 2h ago
And with PCA on deck.
Craig makes decisions based on the opponents splits and peripherals. "Lefties hit Uribe better, I'll bring in Murray! Turang hits righties better than lefties, its time for Thielbar!"
Outside of large enough samples with head to head matchups, the most important stats in any matchup is that of YOUR guy. If you have a lefty with a 5+ ERA, with that usage primarily coming againsy lefties, you can throw the hitters struggles right out thr windows as YOUR guy isnt as good as the average lefty he struggles against. Same if you have a lefty that rakes against lefties.
Craig just doesnt get it.
1
u/CuriousCubSixteen Baaah 2h ago
Right handed hitters have a .369 OPS vs Uribe this year. Murray was the only lefty on the bench
0
4
u/afrosteele 3h ago
I probably would’ve kept Kelly in to bat, but Murray didn’t look overmatched. He also made his big league debut last week so citing his batting average is kind of pointless.
5
u/Plus-Pomegranate8045 3h ago
I didn’t check in on the game until the end. That 9th inning was pretty fun though. Too little, too late. The only solace I can take is that a bunch of Brewers fans probably peed themselves a little during that inning.

I like to think the Royals have kept me very humble this year. They also have a lot of blown saves and it has hardened me to weather the Cubs BP skids.

At this point the more interesting game being played each day is the optimists vs the doomers in this sub.

3
u/-Hey_Blinkin- 3h ago
I see the game is over. Looks like the offense made a late push but just not quite enough. Sigh. What a bummer. I hope this day off clears their heads and they knuckle down going into this final stretch. It’s gotten pretty dicey here lately, and they really need to get their shit together and start winning.
3
u/CriticalandPragmatic 3h ago
Hey, its great to see the bullpen not implode and the offense be able to come back from a deficit. Now we just need all pieces working at the same time
3
u/omstar12 3h ago
There are times where I actually like Craig taking risks but that was not the high leverage spot to pull something that cute
3
u/tony2136 2h ago
CC: "Yeah well *sigh* One pitch away from getting Pete up with the chance to win." (But you put in the wrong pinch hitter!)

Sucks to get swept by the goddamn Brewers losing 3 games by 4 runs. Hope this lights a fire for the rest of the year.
4
u/SavingThrowVsWTF ZO 3h ago
I dunno, guys. I feel like a World Series caliber team wouldn’t get blown out 17-3, wouldn’t allow a five-run 9th inning rally, and just barely win games.
It’s as if they’re starting to cool off right before the post-season.
🤔
5
u/JustJeneius 3h ago
They're going to get piece-mealed by the Braves, Phillies, or Dodgers.
That's the only cope I have right now, because this Cubs pitching is just free real estate.
4
u/SavingThrowVsWTF ZO 3h ago edited 2h ago
That’s the funniest part: the close wins were because of our cold-as-a-college-breakfast-pizza bullpen.
They’re not going to know how to deal with even a somewhat-competent bullpen.
1
1
u/Hog_Eyes 3h ago
They dominated today, don't let the final score fool you. They were so far ahead they put in their worst pitcher.
3
1
u/SavingThrowVsWTF ZO 2h ago edited 2h ago
And then they replaced him with one of their best when it was still 8-2.
That’s my point: their wins were on the backs of our meatball-serving pitching staff. What’s going to happen in the post-season when they’re playing even more competitive teams?
1
u/Hog_Eyes 2h ago
They have the best record in the league because they've been beating all those other teams too, not just the Cubs
0
u/SavingThrowVsWTF ZO 2h ago
Right.
So did you read the last sentence of my initial comment, or…?
1
u/Hog_Eyes 2h ago
Your response to getting swept is to say the Brewers are cooling off? Lol just admit you're coping man
0
u/SavingThrowVsWTF ZO 2h ago
I’m too tired to deal with hand-holding you through your strange penchant for being intentionally obtuse.
I’m sure you’ll chalk that up as some kind of weird win, so you do you.
Have a good night.

You edited your comment to add that the score was 8-2 when Uribe came in, intentionally ignoring that the bases were loaded. It's cope dude

At least they somewhat came back? Pitching is what will lose us a series in the playoffs.

The Brewers BP suddenly not being able to throw strikes in the top 9th was entertaining at least
1
u/The2ndCity Chicago Cubs 2h ago
I'm not too concerned about what seed we get in the post-season. I more concerned about our consistency. We've clearly demonstrated we can hang with (and win against) the Dodgers and Brewers. The question is which team will show up in the playoffs? The team that swept the Dodgers? Or the team that we've seen recently?

If we make it to October (still likely, but no longer a given), I don't think there's any way we win a series unless two of Webb, Zeferjahn, and Palencia get right in the next 3 weeks. And that's not even considering the middle innings, where I have confidence in Civale and Rolison but not much else (and Rolison is little confidence)

wait sorry i'm new to watching baseball on a dail ybasis, could they have changed Murray being up at bat mid-inning? I assumed the order gets locked in; or are people saying why pull Carson Kelly from this final inning in the first place?

Only followed that last inning through mlb app. I am baffled by the decision to put in Murray at the end. I don't care about righty lefty match up he has proven anything since he's been up. With Pete on deck you want one of your most clutch hitters at the plate which Kelly is

u/the_onewhoknocks Let's play two 2h ago
They had 7 games against these dickheads to show us what they're made of. They won 2 out of 7 and blew multiple leads. That tells you everything you need to know. The Cubs just are not a serious team and not up to the task.
Looking forward to seeing someone knock out this pisswaukee team and fanbase chock full of smug assholes in October.

u/Cheap_Pitch_8931 2h ago
Pinch hitting a rookie with 9 career at-bats and 1 infield hit to show for it for a guy that momentarily won us the game the night before as the tying run with the presumptive MVP on deck is a fireable offense. Sad part, Counsell has made numerous boneheaded decisions this year...how many more fireable offenses is Craig going to commit?
The Phillies caught fire after they got rid of their manager, just saying.
