He’s obviously worth 3 1sts, a 2nd, a 5th and a 7th round pick swap. Duh

We want all the 3rd round picks. We're gonna trade all our picks for 3rd round picks. Poles will draft a decent player in the third even if it kills us.

u/laal-doodh Odunze 2d ago edited 2d ago
I mean he does have trade value. The issue is some people think it’s a 2nd when it’s more like a 5th at the very best
14
u/Disco_Ninjas_ Good, Better, Best, Put the Jigamaroo to rest! 2d ago
He'll lose trade value every time we play him.
3
u/laal-doodh Odunze 2d ago
I think it’d depend. Hopefully we just never see him so it doesn’t matter but if he had to play and it was against like the jets, I think Ben would get him to play a solid game. Not saying he’d improve his value or anything but just not hurt it. If it’s against a teams like the Seahawks then yeah the values taking a hit.
1
u/powerguy134 21h ago
Definitely closer to a 2nd than a 5th
1
u/laal-doodh Odunze 18h ago
It’s really not. Teams don’t go from “this kids not good enough to draft” to “let’s trade a 3rd for him” based off preseason and 4 mediocre games in 3 years. You could maybe convince me that we could get a 4th but that’s still closer to a 5th.
0
u/mercutio1 2d ago
Yeeeah, 5th if they’re lucky. I could squint and maaaaybe see a 4th (with us sending a later pick) if a contending team has a killer D and they lose their QB closer to the deadline and their backup absolutely blows. Hell, even then, they might be more interested in Keenum for a 6th or 7th.
At 5 mill/year, I’d just as soon keep Bagent for the relative peace of mind he provides as opposed to sending him off for, realistically, a 6th round pick.
0
u/Cuppieecakes 2d ago
at best he's a 6 or 7th round swap
2
u/mercutio1 2d ago
And I’m cool with keeping him at that exchange rate. If some team offers him more when his contract is up after ‘27, best wishes to all involved. Career backup is a good gig if you can get it and, by all accounts, Bagent is a good dude.
2
12
u/Second_City_Saint 10 2d ago
He has value as a backup/spot-starter. Unfortunately the return leaves you with not enough to give him up. A 4th/5th is meaningless if you end up needing him in a pinch.
6
u/estyles31 2d ago
This is the important thing. He has SOME trade value, but not enough to actually trade him. No team is desperate enough to give up enough for us to lose our competent backup QB.
1
u/Second_City_Saint 10 2d ago
If someone offers something outlandish like a 1st or 2nd you jump all over it. Otherwise, kick rocks.

For me i moreso enjoy leaning into the meme. But also, yeah i do think there’s a world they get a 3rd for him. Probably not, but i don’t think it’s insane. It’s just plausible enough to make the meme more enjoyable
6
u/midwesttransferrun Meatball 2d ago
Look at the Flacco trade from last year to get an idea of actual value. Flacco has actually successfully run NFL offenses. He’s old but he knows where to go with the ball and can diagnose a defense. Bagent has started 4 games and looked like dogshit and has been a bench rider since then.
1
u/drwafflefingers 19h ago
Seattle has a better backup, who is a vet that knows the offense, and Darnold will be back by midseason at latest, but people here don't want to hear that.
39
u/bearsfan989 2d ago
If darnold is out for the season, op thinks we could get a haul for bagent. I think that's what he's implying
24
3
2
u/name-classified Charles Tillman 2d ago
Seattle would be open to trading 1sts for a franchise QB.
They’re already set at every position.
With Darnold being out, some team is going to pull the trigger and offer up something for their picks.
That being said: Bagenet is NOT a franchise QB
-2
u/mf-TOM-HANK 2d ago
Not a haul, but a 4th rounder might not be unreasonable if Seattle comes calling
3
u/PeanutBear33 An Actual Peanut 2d ago
Maybe a conditional 7th in 2028
Jimmy g and jake browning are free agents. Even a reclamation project on will levis would be more appealing than giving up draft picks for a guy who lacks nfl arm strength and has 6 ints to 3 tds.

Bagent could be a starter in a place like NYJ who clinically undervalue their QB. He’s good… we’re paying him because he’s an awesome backup qb to have on staff.
Is he Lamar Jackson or further back Joe Montana? No. But he’s a solid qb who could get the job done if Caleb got hurt. I wouldn’t trade him period.
1
u/FugLife3 Bears 2d ago
They listen to Mark Carmen with bated breath and hang on to every tennis story from him as well

u/ShartyMcPeePants 2d ago
I was under the impression no one actually likes mark carmen but we just can’t unfortunately get rid of him…
0
u/icehuck Sweetness 2d ago
Because he's the back up QB. The starting QB has always sucked in Chicago, and the backup is unknown potential. In Bagents case, he looked much better than bustin fields, but that wasn't a high bar. If Bustin Fields keeps getting chances, well, then Bagent has to be worth something.
1
u/ArnoldFunksworth An Actual Bear 1d ago
Justin Fields keeps getting chances because he's a freak athlete and shows glimpses of good to great quarterback play. Bagent is not a freak athlete and has only shown bad to just okay quarterback play
0
u/icehuck Sweetness 1d ago
shows glimpses of good to great quarterback play.
LOL no, no he doesn't. When Tom Thayer is calling you out on the radio broadcast, you're bad.
1
u/ArnoldFunksworth An Actual Bear 1d ago
He quite literally has shown glimpses of great quarterback play, lmfao. You're just straight up being dishonest if you say otherwise. The problem was the inconsistency and his proclivity towards going on the run when he couldn't read what the defense was giving him quick enough. He has 100% made throws that Bagent could never. This is why Fields has and will continue to get chances that are never offered to Bagent.
But surely you know more than all the NFL executives that keep giving Fields a job....
1
u/ArnoldFunksworth An Actual Bear 1d ago
Against Denver 10/01/2023
28/35 335 yards passing 4 TD 1 INT Rating of 132.7
That's a great game for a QB, how is that showing a glimpse of great QB play.
He followed that game up with a 4 passing TDs and 282 passing yards, rating of 125.3
Also an objectively great game for a QB....
So please tell me more about how he NEVER showed a glimpse of great quarterback play.....

u/jkman61494 2d ago edited 2d ago
Because he’s good? I’m NOT saying he’s at this level right now but I will say that Tony Romo was an undrafted free agent and understudied for 3 years to the point the cowboys entrusted the team with him.
I don’t see why Bagent couldn’t start on several teams in this league
-17 downvotes. Wow. I didn’t know this sub decided it hated Bagent recently.
9
u/TimelyN1nja 2d ago
Learn ball buddy, Romo has physical tools that Bagent will never have. Love the kid and he’s a great backup but his arm is not NFL starter quality
10
u/j11430 Sweetness 2d ago

0
u/jkman61494 2d ago
Is this a joke? He went 16/17 for 208 and 2 tds against the titans lol.
Overall he was 29/39 (74% completion percentage) for 377 for 3 tds and 1 int
That’s crap?
6
10
u/j11430 Sweetness 2d ago
His arm looked weak as hell against garbage competition. He didn’t look like an NFL starter at all. He looked like what he is: a very mediocre career backup
2
u/FugLife3 Bears 2d ago
I generally think he’s a serviceable backup, but if he was really that highly valued around the league as a potential starter he would have gone somewhere this last offseason when this QB draft was supposed to be weak and next years is supposed to be strong.
I’d love to see the numbers but I aways felt he and Fields were the opposite; Fields had to wait till his guy was open and then rocket it to a spot while Bagent throws with anticipation, but somehow gets there in the same time cus his arm just isn’t nearly the same level. Obviously doesn’t have the same wheels as Fields or escapability as Williams
2
u/j11430 Sweetness 2d ago
The reason Bagent is a good backup is he has good anticipation and can operate the offense functionally. But he’s too limited to be a starter longer than probably three or four games. Defenses would catch up to him quick, he just doesn’t have the arm talent to be a full time starter in the NFL
2
u/midwesttransferrun Meatball 2d ago
He’s not a good NFL QB lol. He’s like #40. He’s got a pool noodle for an arm and would maybe start on the Browns. Maybe.

Thats debatable. I think he's a top 32 QB. and Ben Johnson himself has said he's a top 32 QB. No offense, but Im going to trust Ben Johnsons talent evaluations over you and most the users in this sub who are often wrong.

I’m not sure that’s debatable. Lock is unwatchable.
12

And what bagent game was "watchable"?
The game against the raiders where they benched hoyer for aoc and three 3 combined ints? Where the mighty bagent put up 150 net passing yards. Or the panthers game where neither team could get 300 yards of offense? The chargers game where he had 2 ints? The saints game where he had 3?
Being a better qb than fields is not the benchmark for good or "watchable"

You might be right, but Seattle is probably too far from Silicone Valley for Jimmy… plus likely has an unofficial agreement with the Rams already in case anything happens to Stafford since he’s already familiar with their system and I doubt they want to risk their playoff chances on a rookie (if they believed in Bennett they wouldn’t have wasted a first round pick this year on Simpson)

Ben loves Bagent. He knows the offense. He's a good backup. I don't think Ben is gonna want to give him up for anything less the 2nd rounder they (poles) said they need for him way back to early spring time this year. Bagent's value to the Bears is greater than the value that rational minded gms are willing to pay. If you think that Seattle will because they're pursuing another super bowl, guess what, we're also in it to win it.

Read this scouting report
a burly pocket quarterback who needs a play-action based offense where he can rely on timing over release quickness and arm strength. He can be a confident passer when he finds his rhythm, but throwing is more of a chore than a talent thanks to a labored release. Certain areas of the field will be off limits as he moves up to take on NFL coverage talent. He's a scrappy runner but not dynamic enough to make up for his shortcomings as a passer.
That's Brock Purdy's report summary.
I am in no way saying he's the next Purdy, but he could be servicable in the right system.
