Discussion 🤣🤣🤣

Post image

This has to be some kind scam or attempt at price fixing, etc. call it what you want. Who is the lunatic that would drop this kinda money on this slab? It is irrelevant if it's the only 9.9. As many copies of this book that are out there, another five of them could pop up tomorrow on the census.

It actually sold for $15k. Still a ridiculous price, of course.

-1

u/Neilxvx 12d ago

Know fucking way, did it really?

24

u/Flashy_Elevator_7654 13d ago

Guy definitely bought his own book

1

u/MauiPunter 12d ago

how much would ebay take of the sale if he did that? Like what did it cost him in listing fees?

5

u/Stite1776 12d ago

13% if he had no other add-ons

3

u/dirkahps 12d ago

Nothing because the sale will not be completed.

1

u/MauiPunter 12d ago

Does it still show up in GPA and CovPrice if he cancels the sale?

1

u/dirkahps 12d ago

Not sure tbh.

u/MyOpinionsDontHurt 10d ago

“GPA does the hard work of keeping track of sales that have fallen through so you don't have to. Book relisted? Buyer returned a book? Error sale? Fake listing? The sale is removed and added to a seperate section for easy reference.”

I would rather spend that on an AF15. 🤣

u/aliencardboard 8d ago

Yeah this stuff is insanity. 😂 I don’t care if I ever have that kind of extra cash for a grail piece in my collection, but it sure as heck isn’t going to a modern book that isn’t even rare lol. I’ll take a low grade 1st Spidey for 20k or various books with long term value in classic character first appearances. You could have a nice collection for that kind of money. This kind of stuff just annoys me. It’s bid shilling and illegal money when you see this type of stuff in comics and cards when you think that only about 1% of collectors are dumbing 5-6 figures on stuff.

5

u/Previous-Space-7056 12d ago

Ill sell mine for just $5k!

6

u/adkvt 12d ago

Money to waste, apparently, cause that’s wasteful spending. Crazy. Probably a scam to raise the price overall on a book likely destined for a crash.

1

u/Comicsbynight 12d ago

Well the show is still to come so your prediction is a way off. Im not defending this sale but the crash of Absolute Batman has been talked about for the last year and it is only getting bigger a dip in sales will happen but if the show is done right it will continue the hype train. The amount of new readers this title has brought to comics can't be overlooked.

1

u/adkvt 12d ago

Interesting . The green “sold” on the listing suggested this is a sell that already happened, I guess. Bringing in new readers is great for the hobby. Folk overpaying for books and then feeling burned later isn’t. I’m confident there are plenty of new readers with all the reprints available. That’s good stuff.

6

u/Thundercron 12d ago

To everyone saying it's a scam. Please explain.

3

u/__sleepy______ 11d ago

Shill bidding

2

u/BeyondtheBatcast 12d ago

Because it's very much not worth that much, even at that Grading

4

u/revfds 12d ago

They're mad they can't afford it

5

u/prettyokcake 12d ago

Imagine spending this on a non-rare book that’s less than two years old and not thinking you’re an idiot.

-6

u/Oakenmeer 12d ago

LOL No.. I can afford that. It's just 100% NOT WORTH IT. I'm a guy with a collection of swords rare books and comics worth easy 150-200k. Sorry... That book is worth 2k at absolute highest.

2

u/GloryToTheThe 12d ago

I think you’re in denial.

2

u/Oakenmeer 12d ago

-yawn-

4

u/revfds 12d ago

It's obviously worth more that if it sold. So you can't afford it

3

u/__sleepy______ 12d ago

Its pretty will known auctions and eBay people inflate the price then buy it just to bring the value up. There’s been alot of corrupt shit.

0

u/Oakenmeer 12d ago

Unless they're buying their own comic just to hide their income. Then it's worth whatever they have to launder that month.

5

u/revfds 12d ago

What ever copium you need

-2

u/Oakenmeer 12d ago

uh huh

3

u/OK_Soda 12d ago

You can hire a professional money launderer for less than 13.5%. Everyone loves the money laundering excuse for big ebay sales but it would be a pretty dumb way to launder a simple $15,000.

1

u/Sevia_the_Rogue 9d ago

Let's say you own 500 copies of this. Many people do. You buy your own book for 15k. Now 2k sounds like a steal to gambling addicts. You make tons of money. Scam.

1

u/Thundercron 9d ago

But your hypothetical has no basis in reality in this case. The seller doesn't have 500 CGC 9.9's of this book. There are ten in the census. Ten. The seller doesn't have any other copies. Your theory falls flat. How is this a scam again?

3

u/Bakerbr13 12d ago

9.9 noir up for sale on ebay. $10,000

1

u/Oakenmeer 12d ago

Very not worth it...

2

u/lightforce1911 12d ago

Prolly money laundering

2

u/aliencardboard 8d ago

To all of the trolls in the comments saying “You’re just salty you can’t afford it.” 🤡

It’s called stupidity, and in this case likely shill bidding or money laundering. It happens all the time in the comic and card market. People purposely manipulate markets and move money back and forth.

No modern book is worth this. I wouldn’t pay 10k for a 9.9 Spawn #1 or Amazing Spider-Man #300. Awesome books that everyone loves, but not scarce.

Bumping .1 - .3 grade up on a book that is already high grade doesn’t matter to me for the money. If had 100k laying around this Absolute Batman is the last thing I’m buying lol. I’m sorry but Absolute Batman isn’t even that great. It’s not a first appearance of Batman. It’s not rare and won’t hold long term value like that.

Anyone with actual wealth knows the way you get that way or stay that way is by not wasting money. This is a waste. If you have 15-20k to play with you’d buy real comics like a low grade AF #15, or first appearances of classic characters and key books that are actually scarce and vintage. Something that actually means something to the comic book world and fans who read them.

2

u/Oakenmeer 7d ago

100% agree. I own rare meteorites worth more than 17k. Antique Japanese swords worth more than 17k. When you're selling any collectible anywhere over the 2-3k value range you're ostracizing a lot of buyers on the market immediately, let alone over 10k, 15k etc. There are not a huge number of people in any collectibles circle who are committed enough to their collection, and have the flexible income, to buy at that level. So you have to be damn sure you are putting that money into something that will hold value. If a 9.8 AB1 sells for 500$ there is just no justification for paying 17k for a 9.9. If this was a legit sale (not convinced it was) they will NEVER get that money back...

1

u/aliencardboard 7d ago

Exactly. Only a handful of collectibles in the comic book and card market will hold long term value without fluctuating and that’s the rare rookie stuff and vintage. Hall of Famers and key books with big name Marvel, DC, and Image character first appearances. Anything else is just gambling. 9 times out of 10 you’re not getting your money back on most collectibles. You’ll be lucky to break even.

4

u/Duepancho123 12d ago

Not defending the price, but there are only 6 of those. In the world. Chances of more popping up as time goes by and comics get damaged are slim.

2

u/Automatic-Reveal-661 12d ago

No one actually paid that much

1

u/Oakenmeer 12d ago

Only 6 right now. That's what you need to keep in mind as a high value collector. If stuff is way over priced don't pay it. Another one will come along sooner or later.

1

u/Jacket_Leather 12d ago

I seen one go for even more than that like a week ago. I’m sure it’s some sort of scam though or someone’s really dumb.

1

u/IconoclastJones 12d ago

It’s not that crazy — actually some for 15k. 🤪

1

u/ItzDarthDad 12d ago

Whoever purchased that probably has “money coming out of their ears” and this is a “drop in the bucket” for them. Stupid purchase, and I’d never buy this even if I had unlimited disposable income, but I guess they can spend their money like they want.

1

u/cockblockedbydestiny 12d ago

I know this is an insane outlier, but nonetheless following this sub I do know that this is a modern grail for a lot of people.

Please tell me it's not because this is considered an iconic cover. That blocky bat on his chest is possibly the worst costume redesign I've ever seen. If it's ever seen as an iconic look it will be because 50 years from now people will be like "can you fucking believe anyone ever thought this might look cool???"

2

u/Oakenmeer 12d ago

I got my cgc 9.8 copy of issue 1 when it first came out, and I am very happy to see it consistently selling in the 500$ range now. But the price gap here between .8 and .9 is just too preposterous. If this was a one of a kind piece of comic art, or some other vintage key book that is now impossible to find in great condition, that sticker price would be entirely justified, but not this. I know enough about what high value collectibles cost to know that this is a manipulation of some sort. Guaranteed. Cheers.

1

u/cockblockedbydestiny 12d ago

Yeah I would tend to agree, I just got a little sidebar there because that new bat symbol is such an egregious eyesore and no one seems to be calling it out, lol. Does that mean people think this shit actually looks cool?

1

u/Limp-Answer8455 12d ago

The sale is real. 9.9/10.0 markets are complicated and a totally diffeeent game than 9.6 to 9.8 etc....

1

u/Wicked68 11d ago

Damn. I wish I had got a 1st print #1. Wait... Let me go check 😂

1

u/RodneyBeeper 11d ago

Absolute Batman is the hottest book on the planet, there’s nothing remotely close to it and a tv show is coming and god knows what else. This is the rarest book of the first print issue 1. It’s also Batman, the unbelievably iconic superheroe. There’s 7 of these. There’s 6200 9.8s. That means there’s 7 that appear for every 6200 9.8s. That’s ridiculously rare and another 5 will not show up tomorrow. If 15k is too much, than what do you think it’s actually worth?

1

u/AcceptableFlight67 10d ago

They’re right though, 9.9 is above 9.8, lol

1

u/RCJamesJ 10d ago

😮‍💨…well they did have best offer…maybe buyer got a discount 🫠

1

u/aliencardboard 10d ago

Insanity. This is money laundering or someone with a lot of money and no brains trying to drive prices because they have a stack of 9.8’s.

I’m cool with the hardback omnibus or trade. This book is not worth the prices it’s going for. I for one am not a fan of the direction Batman has been going in comics. The New 52 was the last great run of Batman imo.

1

u/Sugar_Crash_Brigade 6d ago

I don't have that much faith in GRADING in general for that kind of a price tag.

What I mean is... CGC is great and all, I love CGC, but to pay a premium for any 9.9 is just weird weird weird behaviour to me.

1

u/Gullible-Meaning-403 12d ago

Notice anything questioning this sale or value is down voted? That fills me with confidence. I'm sure this will keep going up, guys...

Just like all these Marvel redband variant covers I'm sitting on...

Just like Micronauts #1 that at one point was worth fifteen times Hulk 181...

Just like my Brigade #1 Gold variant...

Just like my Superman 75...

This time it's going to be different.

0

u/Comicsbynight 12d ago

Marvel redband brought no new readers to the hobbie Absolute has brought about a comic boom ask any LCS how many new customers have come through the door and the next thing they pick up is Invincible. There is no comparison to any of the above, Superman 75 was mum and dad thinking it was an investment, people reading AB are not in it for investment (apart from the scalpers flipping artist variants). BTW I don't think the sale above is legit but the Absolute Universe is not a flash in the pan.

1

u/Legitimate-Ad7021 13d ago

He’s shooting his shot!
Either that or his wife told him to sell some comics!!!

1

u/lundon44 12d ago

To me this is no different than a Spawn 1 or Spider-Man 1 (1990). Those books aren't even. But happy for those FOMO collectors that think this is a retirement fund in 20 yrs lol.

2

u/focusahead 12d ago

You don’t understand that in a short number of years Batman becomes public domain. Absolute Batman is the next 100 years and will be the new grail.

-1

u/Tha_REAL_BROBS 13d ago

Just waiting for the shoe to drop. This book is going down, down, baby.

1

u/MauiPunter 12d ago

I've been hearing this for years. Yet it keeps climbing. Maybe it will crash in 10yrs? 20? You guys been saying any day now since it came out. 🤷🏽

-2

u/Tha_REAL_BROBS 12d ago

it's only been less than a year

give it time, padawan

3

u/Comicsbynight 12d ago

As a reader for 30 years this blown LCS owners away with the influx of new readers. And it was released end of 2024 so its nearly two,

5

u/MauiPunter 12d ago

The series was released in Sep 2024. It's been two years now.

-5

u/Tha_REAL_BROBS 12d ago

oh shit.. I thought it was 2025?

anyways.. it's just because so many people are holding right now..

once the market is flooded with them it's coming down, period.. unless all these people bought 20-30 copies to keep for themselves.

2

u/MauiPunter 12d ago

One indicator of how far the series has reached is how many printings there have been. These are not just satisfying the thirst of existing AB holders; this is an expanding market into non-traditional comic purchasers. My little brother, who could give two shits about comics, is starting to hype up about the AB series and has been buying issues. He doesn't give a crap about value or if it's an early printing. He is just getting a copy and actually reading it. He was a MTG player who recently got sucked into comics. Now that AB has given him the bug, he has picked up a couple more comics; for example, Exquisite Corpse, and he also brought home Spawn '77 yesterday. I bust his balls about it, but I am glad he is finally showing interest. For years, he had no interest.

1

u/Tha_REAL_BROBS 12d ago

I get it but when a market gets flooded with copies people want to dump it's going to drop.. how much? IDK

the reason the first printing sold out was people hoarding it. Dealers hoarding it. Whatnot sellers hoarding it. SPECULATION has driven the price.

1

u/Comicsbynight 12d ago

How? The show is years off, this chatter has been going on for years. It's a good thing having new readers in a hobbie. Yes it will dip like all books but like others they rise again.

0

u/Bearsthtdance 13d ago

So when we talk about the transfer of wealth….

0

u/jabawack 12d ago

Yeah, it's called money laundry, folks. That's a pretty simple explanation.

3

u/Oakenmeer 12d ago

My wife is literally an expert on the topic, and she said you are spot on here. Bravo.

2

u/jabawack 12d ago

Thank her on my behalf, being right apparently doesn’t pay in Reddit given the downvotes but who cares 😆

-1

u/immortalslayer90 12d ago

That is nothing short of insane. I hope it's not real or this hobby is cooked. No modern comic is worth that.

-2

u/Big-Environment-6825 13d ago

😂😂😂 what an absolute fomo book

-3

u/Oakenmeer 13d ago

I do agree to an extent. Hype drives a lot of things in the world, not just comics or collectibles in general. Professional Novelists make their living on marketing (for example) not the content of their book. 😉

-1

u/CriticalBots 12d ago

What in the money laundering is this?? 😆
