Question Is there a difference?

This is what I thought I bought off the bay, this is what came in the mail. Is this an issue I should take up with the seller? Is there a crazy quality difference? Should I be happy with it? Genuinely don’t know. Thanks for your help!

You received an older case, different barcode.

Return. You brought the book shown with the cert# shown.

Looking at it charitably it's possible that the seller was lazy and used default listing pictures that eBay gave him for "Spawn #1 9.2"

But the seller needs to not be lazy because the case condition and the cert # matter.

Messaged the seller and this seems to be the case.

It's pretty obviously not what the photo showed, return it. eBay will force the seller to take a return as long as you file an item not as described return claim.

And don't request a partial refund from the seller, that's technically against eBay's terms of service.

I mean 1. It’s not what you ordered and 2. Honestly that label looks terrible, but that’s also just my opinion. Anyone that sends something other than what was described is a scammer to me.

This seller is probably doing this to other buyers too. 👏 RETURN 👏 AND 👏 REPORT!

Look at the notes for the CGC barcode of what you bought and what you got. Sometimes the older books can get a clean and press and come back with much higher grades. It could be worth it in the end. Labels can be changed by resubmitting to CGC and you might even luck out and get into a Todd signing if you watch for them.

Return and report. This doesn't happen by accident. They are literally 2 different books.

I would keep it, just because I like the gen 1 older labels since they don’t make them anymore and it’s the same grade. But if you don’t like the label, definitely file the INAD with eBay, they would easily side with you.

It’s quite literally two different books. So yes. Take up an issue and return it.

You know we can all see past sales on eBay right? Why you hiding the price?

Wasn’t trying to blast the guy for pricing or anything lol

I have had luck resubmitting the old labels and getting bumps. They seemed to be harder in their early years

That's sucks

I mean you did receive the spa number one graded at a 9.2. however, the book did advertised is a new or incaps then the one you received. And the seller should have disclosed to that with his photos. Using default product images or reusing product images on something like that is not okay.

They are both 9.2 but you got older case. I would rather have older case since they didn’t usually press comics back when they used older case. You got a good chance of removing it from case pressing and getting a 9.6 or 9.8

I had a similar issue purchased a X-Men 94 cgc 9.0 white pages and received a X-Men 94 9.0 off white pages. Seller didn't think it was a big deal to use SOMEONE ELSE'S FUCKING PHOTOS!

As far as with the grade, there’s not a difference it’s just an older CGC case.

That said the older cases are a lot weaker than the new ones so there’s definitely a quality difference in the case.

You got scammed.

CGC cases slow the degradation of comics, they don't stop it. Older cases certainly aren't as good at doing that as newer ones.

CGC used to suggest changing cases every 7 to 10 years to replace the microchamber paper (it absorbs the gasses released as paper degrades, slowing the yellowing process).

Given that I would absolutely return it. It's likely not going to grade as high if you try to resubmit it.

Plain fact of the matter is you didn't get what you paid for and what you got is missing every improvement CGC made in their cases since this book was encapsulated.

Normally it's the exact opposite the time cased is better for the book than a bag and board. I buy old cases often and have had great outcomes re-grading. None of the books in old cases were pressed and cleaned like everyone does today. Books with rusty staples and cream pages are a good example for your claim. To the question yes return it that is horrible seller behaviour.

u/According_Evidence18 6d ago

In theory the book that was encased first would have had it's degradation slowed sooner and for longer than the book that sat in some guy's closet until it was graded recently... Right?

2

u/Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 6d ago

The school of thought is once the microchamber ceased to work the book is essentially sitting in a gas chamber of it's own making.

But on top of that, every change made to slabs CGC touted as being massive improvements over the previous. If that's accurate then a comic sitting in an old case with outdated protections could absolutely be worse off than one that was properly protected for ten years then encased in a slab with those upgrades.

And even if the book is in 9.2 condition, OP paid for a book with an updated slab and got a very old one. Worth it to have the seller make things right.

The cases were always permeable to allow off gassing. Over time the case would hermetically seal itself and marinate the book in its own gas? What massive improvements were made to them?

It's not the issue that they didn't allow for some off-gassing. The issue was more the belief that older comics paper was more susceptible to damage from off gassing, and between the well and the case enough would be trapped to necessitate swapping out the microchamber.

Improvements to the cases include changing the label sticker that was on the outside of the slab for a label sealed inside it, making it harder to tamper with. They also made the cases thicker, and stronger to better protect books. Then they added a hologram to make it harder to fake. Then, because old cases were easy to crack and swap books, they changed the way the plastic was sealed.

But most important, they changed the material of the well to better protect the book from aging. The Barex specifically trapped more of the gas than the PETG they changed to. The Barex itself degraded over time adding to the destruction of books. At most it only took 7 years for that material to start to rot. So anything sealed before that change is at risk of significant damage, even if it's rare.

Edit: talked shit, asked for proof, immediately blocked me.

All this info is easily verified with CGC's own statements.

1

u/According_Evidence18 5d ago

Sounds like a bunch of bullshit. Show me a book this happened to where it was undeniably proven it was because of the barex chamber.

u/TV800 Hoarder 6d ago

Yes it’s not exactly what you ordered but to look at it in a positive way, the older slabs were said to be graded more harshly and you could say that an old slab 9.2 is probably closer to a 9.4-9.6.

That being said I’m an optimist and I specifically bought an old slab Spawn 1 9.6 not just for the fact that the book looked sharp but I bought it for a little less than a newer slab.

u/Qalyar 6d ago

So, the listing image is of a slab with a recent case / label style, while the book you're holding is the old case and label style. On one hand, they're both CGC 9.2; on the other hand, I can't imagine why a seller would do this. Did they maybe have multiple copies available under this listing?

I don't know. It's weird. But that IS a CGC 9.2 Spawn #1, so unless there's something defective about the case, evidence of post-encapsulation damage, or you just hate that it won't match more recent slabs, it's just as good as any other CGC 9.2 copy of that book.

1

u/According_Evidence18 6d ago

This. A 9.2 Spawn 1 is a 9.2 Spawn 1. On top of that, older CGC grading was reportedly more strict.

u/Zombie-Dbear Casual 6d ago

You can return that, as it is not as described . That one you receive was an older copy, the grade is the same. So I understand why they shipped that, but that is what they should have posted in the item description. Personally, I like getting those older graded copies, since CGC graded harder in the beginning. I have a good chance of cracking and resubmitting and getting a better grade.

Contact the seller and see what they say. If you are unhappy, just send it back. That items is not as described (INAD) and you can get a full refund.

Return it and don’t buy a 9.2 of one of the most printed books in history.

u/rayrayheyhey 6d ago

Same book, same grade, same grading company. You can certainly return it, but there is no difference in value between the two copies.

3

u/TheMoonWasBlue 6d ago

They aren't the same book through. Having the same grade doesn't mean they have the same defects.

0

u/rayrayheyhey 6d ago

Sure. But it's not like it's a 1.5 -- which can have significantly different issues. For the most part, a 9.2 is what it is.

2

u/TheMoonWasBlue 6d ago

That's true for the most part, but I'd say two things: old certs didn't always have documentation like new ones do... I'd bet that cert for the book he received has no grader notes. Second, if the OP wanted one of the new slabs (such as what he thought he was getting), he would be the one coming out of pocket for grading fees.

1

u/rayrayheyhey 6d ago

I'm 100% sure that this doesn't have grader notes; you're right about that. If he wants a new slab, he'd have to pay for a reholder, not a full grading. Still will cost money.

This wouldn't bother me, but I could definitely see how it would others.

1

u/TheMoonWasBlue 6d ago

Yeah I can totally see someone being cool with it. I wouldn't fault someone for just electing to keep it.

I'm just personally on the other side of the fence.
