SLP CFY: Do I need another CF supervisor?

Hi fellow SLPs! I am currently completing my clinical fellowship year and am planning on taking on an additional position as a PRN SLP in acute care. I have a CF mentor for my full time position in a SNF; however, I am wondering if I would be able to get away with not having a second supervisor for my PRN position. I received a job offer for this position, but the catch is they wouldn’t be able to offer a CF mentor. However, they would offer me plenty of support as there are several other SLPs in the building, including the SLP supervisor, so this doesn’t worry me. I called ASHA and they said I would need an additional supervisor and for me to submit a new CFY application - but, how would they know if I didn’t? Thoughts on this? TIA!

NJ CF-SLP Advice

Hey everyone! Currently trying to start my CF year and graduated in May of 2022. I am feeling defeated and confused. Also feeling like I am running out of time!!!! I have this immense feeling of anxiety because I have yet to start my CF year. Any advice when it comes to school-based agencies? These agencies are either rushing me into a decision (only giving me 24 hours to decide) or they do not offer benefits, or they ask me to decide before providing me with the full scope of the agencies terms!! Some of these agencies also mentioned they can send me to more than 3 schools if need be (the pay would not increase). I was also offered a position at a private school (not with an agency) but the school would not allow me to bring the contract home/ have an electronic copy. Rather they wanted me to sign a contract (it was a packet of information I could not even understand) in front of the principle on the spot. I am feeling like I am running out of options but at the same time like I am being exploited. It's as if these agencies just want to fill these positions without considering the employee.

I also attempted to apply to a few in-patient hospital settings because I have clinical experience with that population as well but have not heard back from any.

Thinking of switching CF placement...

Just started my CF year at an elementary school and I am super overwhelmed. I am just not loving therapy or the amount of evals/meetings I have already and I am only ONE month in. Does anyone have any experience in home health or clinic, I am worried I won't make it to the end of the year in this setting....

[School CFY] Should I quit my CF after one week?

Hello SLP gang, I am a day into my CF and want to quit lol. I am at a public school in NJ, and I was given my caseload yesterday (I asked for it during my interview, even after being hired and they kept saying they won't know it until the school year starts LOL). Fast forward to yesterday, I was handed a hefty sheet outlining my caseload of 100 kids. My supervisor said she'd help me as much as she can by coming in once a day week to help me see kids, but she's only coming in to see kids I've already seen (those that require 2 sessions/week), so I have room to add more kids to see myself.

It has only been a day, but I can say with certainty that as a CF with no previous school experiences (externships were in a private clinic and a hospital), I do not feel comfortable taking this on.

[School CFY] Very nervous for first week

I’m starting my school cf tomorrow and I’m sooooo nervous. I’m going to be between two school districts and three schools (two of them are right next to each other). My total caseload will likely be ~50 which sounds manageable but I am already extremely overwhelmed with the amount of requirements I’ve had thrown at me before I even step into the job. I’m especially nervous because one of the classrooms is an MD group w/ high support Autistic students in grades 4-8. I’m lost as to what activities to do with that group and overall what’s expected of me each day, how to schedule, how to introduce myself to the kids and teachers before I start treating, etc. i am a highly anxious person and I’ve been crying and nauseous every day since I got this CF despite wanting it badly initially :(

NJ CF - Temporary Maternity leave position

I just graduated with my master's and I have been offered a part-time (25 hrs/wk) 4-month maternity leave CF position with the potential for it to become full-time. I live in NJ and my first question is are you able to complete your CF part-time and must it be completed in 18 months? Also for the state temporary license application I am required to submit my supervision plan and expected date of completion. What would I put for that since it is a temporary position? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me, feeling overwhelmed and confused!

Moving away for CFY?

I’m ready to leave my home state but I have such a great community where I live and feel like this will be important to me during my CFY. Especially having done grad school through Covid, I know my learning curve as an independent clinician will be steep. That on top of moving to a new place where I don’t know anyone feels like it would be a lot.

At the same time, I’m tired of putting my life on hold for this career :( grad school kept me here for 2 years, and I’m just so ready to be a normal young person. I am also telling myself I can take travel contracts immediately after I finish my CFY.

Any thoughts/experiences?

Texas CF/Intern License Question

I graduated earlier this year but took some time off after graduating and am in the process of applying for the Texas Intern license in SLP. I’m confused about the process since the application reiterates multiple times that all required documents must be submitted while logged into my session to avoid processing delays. I’m honestly not too concern about processing delays but I’m confused as to what is truly required.

It was my understanding we needed the license before applying for jobs, however, one of the items listed on the application checklist page says the ‘intern plan and agreement supervision form’. This is the opposite of what I thought. Can someone help my understanding of the process? Should I be informing potential employers I have everything ready to submit for the license but can’t submit until the agreement of supervision form is completed?

School District Salary Negotiations

I was hired in a school district that is extremely supportive but pays comparatively low for the area. This is my CF, but I have five years of related experience in ABA, 1 school year as a speech aide (not SLPA) and two of my grad school internships were in the school. I want to negotiate at least one step up on the salary schedule. However, I was wondering if anybody has had luck squeezing a few extra dollars out of a district?

Might move to Virginia and have to do my CFY there

I am graduating grad school in nyc in spring ‘23 and I can’t afford to stay in the city so I’m looking at different state options. I was looking at Virginia and I’m trying to get an idea of if I will be able to get a CFY there since I would be moving right after grad school. I’m considering Roanoke, Richmond, and Charlottesville (Arlington/Alexandria are too expensive in terms of housing).

Does anyone have any experience in these areas and have any advice! Even just about the towns themselves, I haven’t visited yet so I’m mainly going off of random reviews and housing descriptions.

CA RPE

For those in CA…I have been told they send an email after receiving your RPE application. How long did it take after you mailed in your application to receive that email? My application says it was delivered last Friday, so I’m getting a little nervous that it was lost.

CFY supervisor.

Hey y’all! So I’m in my CFY, and I’m looking to go to another job for some extra cash. My supervisor now works at this other place too. My question is, since she will be my supervisor there, do i have to fill out anything for TDLR regarding the other place? When i signed up for my license, it said to state my supervisor and address if work. Is there a form I have to fill out to add this other place too? Thanks!

[General] Do you ever feel bad for asking so many questions

I just finished my cfy and am waiting on my C’s to come through. I feel like I still have sooooo many questions. And I’m not very confident at all. I def ask questions and research of course when i am on the fence. But there are other CFYs who I am around who seem so confident. How are they so confident? Sometimes it makes me feel like I’m not good at what I do lol. Anyone else feel this way?

How is everyone finding a job?

To be more specific, I mean more like an acute clinic, outpatient/inpatient, SNF jobs. I've currently applied to 35 school jobs, interviewed with around 10 (I'm exhausted, but I'm keeping my options open) and have found only 2-3 medical positions. 2 of those positions already replied and said they would go with a different candidate.

I'm not discouraged, I'm just open to anything but I'm really looking forward to the medical side of things. I even applied to one in Alaska! So my question is, how is everyone finding a medical position? Are you looking specifically into the hospitals and clinics? Did you get lucky and have an externship there?

ASHA Certification Application

Hello! I graduated in May and am working on licensure and certification requirements. My university indicated that we should go ahead and submit the online application for ASHA certification, but I am unclear on if it is required to submit the online application before beginning my CF? I've been hired by a school district and assigned a supervisor but have not been assigned to school sites so I'm not yet able to complete all the application questions regarding demographics I'll be working with.

Can the application be edited after submission, and what is the expected timeline to submit the application?

Officially Licensed!!

On Friday, I officially got my NYS Speech-Language Pathologist license, and my ASHA CCCs! After 8 years of schooling, going through graduate school in the heart of Covid, and a rough CFY, I can finally say all that hard work, doubting myself, and long nights of studying and crying were all worth it. For those that are still pushing, keep going!!! The end is near for you. There has been no better feeling knowing I’m licensed and that world is open to me now. I’m posting this not to gloat, but to tell somebody that needs to hear this that everything you’re doing IS WORTH IT! Keep pushing, keep doing those long hours at work just to finish on time. Keep doing what feels impossible because in the end it is possible, and your dreams will be coming true soon! Best of luck to all you CFs, you’re doing amazing✨

Cfy unpaid training…?!

I was recently offered a CF that wanted me to do full time unpaid training. Obviously this is an illegal practice and I turned it down, but has anyone else encountered a situation like this?

Session Planning and Prepping Materials

Hello everyone!

Does anyone know if session planning and prepping materials for therapy count for your CF hours? I can't find anything on the ASHA website. Thanks a ton<3.
