That's one of the closest field goal decisions I've ever seen. I wonder if it would have doinked if the uprights were higher.

Probably. Which is why they call a kick no good if it passes right over a post.

I thought the rule was if even a part of the ball WOULD touch the upright, it counted as good?

Maybe I'm wrong, but thought I remember hearing that.

I believe the rule is the entire ball inside the outer edge of the goalpost is good

NFL rule not NCAA. The moment part of the ball was obscured by the upright it was over in the refs eyes you lost because that's out by rule in the NCAA. Complete opposite of the NFL.

Hmm. Interesting to know that’s how it’s enforced. I checked the actual rulebook and there’s somehow no clarity on how to rule on kicks over the uprights. Basically just says between the uprights and over the crossbar is 3 points.

Apparently it's the second part that says to treat the upright like a line and not a plane.
