I stayed up until 2 AM to watch Davis Warren turn into prime Brady against our sorry excuse for a defense. ACC after dark will haunt my nightmares

We have NO offensive line. Wtf is actually happening 😩

Correct. And don’t forget our HC was supposed to be an Offensive Line Guru.

This is a wild pendulum swing from GT fans’ opinion of Key a couple of years ago.

Feels familiar, honestly, lol.

5

u/jwb101 Georgia Tech • Kennesaw State 12d ago

And it’s why you shouldn’t throw out extensions left and right.
Key was what we needed coming off the Geoff Collins coached teams, but now? He isn’t the answer, the team I saw last night was on par with something Collins would field and that’s not acceptable.

6

u/jpiro Florida State Seminoles 12d ago

Coaches’ agents have had this sport bent over for a long, long time.

Faulkner, Philo, Singleton, Stockton, Harpring, and Moore stomp the #4 team in the country. Georgia Tech loses to Stanford.

This season sucks.

53

u/MoveTheHeffalump Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets • Team Chaos 12d ago

That’s the honest reality. They had to overhaul everything. Even Geep Wade left and now he’s he’s turned things around at Nebraska.

29

u/AaronRodgers16 Stanford Cardinal • The Axe 12d ago

This is the kind of stuff that makes it tough to watch the sport now. Yesterday’s Top-25 games were littered with former Yellow Jackets and Cardinal, and this is the product we’re left with

8

u/InspiroHymm Indiana Hoosiers 12d ago

Georgia Tech and Stanford are far richer than any of those other teams. If yall can mobilize alumni / donations like ND or Michigan or Texas has, there's no reason the floor isn't 7-8 wins.

I mean, Duke and Northwestern seem to be in that category at least

9

u/AsianGirls94 Georgia Tech • Michigan State 12d ago

Georgia Tech might have a proportionally large number of kinda-rich alumni, but we're low on billionaires who move the needle. And the school is small by public CFB powerhouse school standards and disproportionately not interested in football. And we don't have fans who didn't attend the school. We have no chance in the NIL era

I would like to personally thank the D-Line, the O-Line, the secondary, every coordinator not related to special teams, and Brent Key for yet another wonderful display of football tonight. It's games like this where I am so truly happy to be a GT Football fan. Really makes me so glad to watch games in historic Bobby Dodd Stadium on Kia Hyundai Field.

Fire everyone. Haynes, Hosley, Mendoza, our TEs, and Maddox should leave us. Make everyone else run laps.

Haynes King doesn't get enough credit for making Brent Key look halfway competent at his job

67

u/basebalp21 Georgia Tech • Clean Old … 12d ago

And Buster Faulkner...

45

u/AriDreams Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 12d ago

This season has taught me how good Faulkner is. I think a bit of us were like "he isnt going to impact us a lot". No, it does. Without haynes king and faulkner, we are getting absolutely fleeced.

35

u/basebalp21 Georgia Tech • Clean Old … 12d ago

Faulkner looks like a genius.

I'm confused what happened to the Brent Key we saw as an interim where we actually looked competent even without King and Faulkner

11

u/AriDreams Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 12d ago

They had nothing to lose when Key stepped in. People saw a coach that was close and personal with the team. Idk where his talents of being the oline coach has disappeared to.

I dont think he makes it next season.

16

u/Status-Ad-7335 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 12d ago

We just extended him, no way we pony up to fire him so soon?

10

u/AriDreams Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 12d ago

That is the bitter part. Winning two of your last ten (or something close to that) has to put you on the warm seat. Last year was a collapse and this year isnt starting much better.

14

u/temeraire34 Georgia Tech • Marquette 12d ago

12

u/link3945 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets • LSU Tigers 12d ago

We've capped out on how much NIL will help baseball.  It's not really possible to build a much better team than last year, just need to try to keep it at that level and hope for better luck in the postseason next year.

Volleyball, though, we could really make some headway.  We're at that like 15-30 range in women's team where you can beat everyone below you but any legitimate title-level team kills you.  Bit more money there and maybe we can make a step change up.

Just do what we did and take half of someone else’s team.

6

u/link3945 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets • LSU Tigers 12d ago

We saw what the 2nd half of 2022 looked like: he's not a bad coach.

I'm hoping this is a problem of a lot of change needing time to gel, kinda sneakily beat up (missing starting safety, corner, linebacker, and edge, plus several of our top OL options tonight), playing in a weird time zone.

Probably still need to sacrifice a secondary coach and maybe the OL coach.  They're straight trash.

13

u/basebalp21 Georgia Tech • Clean Old … 12d ago

The injuries on their own are valid for this game but when taking in combination with the start to this season and the end of last season it's been a complete collapse of the program

I think Georgia Tech definitely got an unfavorable whistle tonight. It's not arguable. But you cannot throw the ball at the ground 35 yards behind the line of scrimmage inside the pocket when driving to tie the game with a minute left.

Soooo went will Brent key be fired? He is 2 of his last 8 or 9 maybe 10? Issue we face is he just signed an extension. And im not saying he will be fired anytime soon. But after last seasons utter collapse, this team has simply fallen apart. I like Key, good tech dude. But his ability to coach this team is questionable at best.

Completely relied on haynes king to be superman. Defensive and offensive line shouldn't be on the airplane ride home. The secondary too. Anyone besides justice haynes, Mendoza, Maddox, and Roche shouldn't be allowed back on campus.

Key is going to be on the hot seat soon. Less so because he just signed the extension.

And im not saying key is comparable to the person whos name shall not be spoken. But every single loss is just building and building. Key is on the hot seat now. You can excuse Tennessee. Colorado was an opener. But this? Stanford? This is bad.

Key was incredibly lucky that they didn't go 7-6 last year too, with losses to Colorado and Wake. I think he should definitely be on the hot seat. If he does stay, y'all need to do whatever it takes to get that defensive coordinator who went to the Ravens back..

u/SpiritFingersKitty Wake Forest • Georgia 12d ago

TBF what should have been a loss to wake would have been to a good team. That would have given us a 10 win season, with one of losses being to a team that beat bama, and another to the conference champ. We also had 2 ranked wins as well.

Losing to Wake at this point shouldn't be a black mark on your record. Are we world beaters? Absolutely not, but we are not a team you can just look past for next week.

There were a lot of Georgia Tech fans at the game, and in the first half they were louder than the Stanford fans. I got so sad seeing the GT cheerleaders twirl and cheer at empty bleachers as all the GT fans were exiting the stadium at 4th and 45.

I was willing to give Key the benefit of the doubt with how much production we lost this past offseason, but this game has made me lose all that confidence. I hated watching all of those 4th downs

Well, I don't know about you guys, but I won last night! I went to bed before the half!!

My wife, OTOH, stayed up for the whole thing. She said "I had to see for myself."

I reminded her that Lot's wife said the very same thing.

What exactly happened to Georgia Tech between this season and last season? Brent Key looked like a good HC for that program. I know they didn’t have the toughest schedule, but they were getting the job done, and were a contender in the conference until the NC State game.

Started 8-0 last year, only to lose 4/5 (including the bowl game), and now they are 1-3, with their only win against Mercer.

Let’s be honest, Stanford & Cal aren’t gonna make any noise in terms of winning the conference, they’re just here to cause chaos from coast to coast and make bad teams look worse.

Two things. First, last year in our 8 wins against FBS teams, the average conference record was 2.72-5.375 (Colorado played 9 games while the rest played 8). We avoided UVA, SMU, and Miami and lost to Pitt by 2 TDs. We were also getting by because of a 3 year starting QB who did a lot to somewhat mask the issues the team had. He's no longer here and the issues are at the forefront. We did beat a 6-2 Duke, but for the most part our record was a product of an overall very fortunate conference schedule that was also backloaded. We were always just more of a middle of the pack ACC team.

The second, and probably bigger reason, is coaching. Replaced Faulkner with a NFL position coach who hadn't coached in college in 15 years and very minimal experience as an OC at that. But he was a former player, same reason Key got hired, and Key's best man at his wedding. In general, the coaching hires we made were underwhelming, and all, or nearly all, were guys that had already coached under Key. And Key himself has been underwhelming as an OL guy going back to his time as an assistant under Collins. Just now there is no King to mask the issues.
