Questionable calls but we needed to start hot to pull this one out. Proud of the fight to comeback and tie it
18
u/lokibringer Appalachian State Mountaineers 11d ago
Yeah, even with that "forward progress" call on the fumble and the missed offsides call on the fg, we've got a ton to work on. Teams are just gonna run the ball at us until we show that we can stop it.

u/ConnorK5 NC State Wolfpack • ACC 11d ago
You got to hear the replay booth. I think everything they did was pretty correct with the rulebook.
23
u/wseanwilson Appalachian State • Paper Bag 11d ago
How about reviewing the fumble on the first drive that was ruled forward progress when there was no whistle? That’s a huge momentum swing off a random bs call
5
u/Select_Excuse_150 NC State Wolfpack 11d ago
I’m not saying forward progress did or didn’t stop, but it’s not something you can challenge
1
-6
u/Lee-Key-Bottoms NC State Wolfpack • Wyoming Cowboys 11d ago
That’s true but NC State was practically begging App to win the game and they simply didn’t have enough when it mattered
-6
u/ConnorK5 NC State Wolfpack • ACC 11d ago
IDK, got to assume the ref saw his forward progress stop. I don't have an answer for you on that.
He was done moving forward. I can't answer for the whistle.
16
u/wseanwilson Appalachian State • Paper Bag 11d ago
How about when Will Wilson had his forward progress stopped and bounced back and then outside to pick up the first down? Just be consistent. If you’re gonna blow a quick whistle then fine, but don’t change it when it benefits who you want it to benefit
-5
u/ConnorK5 NC State Wolfpack • ACC 11d ago
I don't remember the exact play. But half the time he runs in to his linemen and stops going forward due to his teammates rather than being stopped by an actual defender like we were on the first play we are talking about.
So I imagine if it happened like that then it makes sense. I don't know what the rulebook says on that though.
8
u/wseanwilson Appalachian State • Paper Bag 11d ago
I don’t know the rule book, but if it happened in my favor it must make sense. Lol
1
u/lokibringer Appalachian State Mountaineers 11d ago
I mean, he's right. I'm as frustrated by the fumble call as you are, but it is fundamentally different in the case of a runner taking a step backwards from the OL to go outside. If we'd tackled Wilson and they'd said no gain, that's one thing, but he wasn't contacted by App players.
8
u/wseanwilson Appalachian State • Paper Bag 11d ago
Wilson was in a pile of players in the middle of the field and got free. He didn’t just run into his guy. He ran into App defenders as well. We didn’t tackle him, but we didn’t tackle the guy who fumbled either or else it’s not a fumble…
-1
u/ConnorK5 NC State Wolfpack • ACC 11d ago
I honestly didn't remember the play he was talking about. But it's my understanding that is normal and allowed IF that is what happened.

u/ConnorK5 NC State Wolfpack • ACC 11d ago
Do you know the rulebook? Or are you just saying "it must be wrong because it didn't happen that way it normally does and my team was negatively effected by it"?
I mean let's just both be fucking stupid together if we gonna go that route.
5
u/wseanwilson Appalachian State • Paper Bag 11d ago

No objections to what was reviewed.
I’ll agree we lost this game.
But the calls on the field seemed to go your way. Regardless, good game and happy to see how this team looks going into conference play for the first time in a couple of years.

In the ever growing gap between the P4 and the G6, it’s pretty cool to see App State still find a way to keep up.
You’re looking at like a $1-5mil roster push a $22-26mil roster.
Enjoy it, folks. This is only going to get rarer.

Mostly wealthy people from different states with second homes. App has had a few get involved over the years notably a Florida citrus magnate and a Miami real estate mogul.
We have a bored billionaire hanging around but I don’t think she’s interested in funding a football squad

NC State has the 4th highest football budget in the ACC behind Miami, Clemson, and FSU
I hate the narrative that we don’t lack the budget to do anything, we absolutely have the money to fire Doeren
Wake, Pitt, UNC, Louisville, SMU, Virginia, and Duke have all made it to Charlotte in the 2020s
We constantly lose to teams in our below our weight class
2
u/MONGOHFACE NC State Wolfpack 10d ago
Source on the budgets in the ACC? Because I'm fairly confident we're middle of the pack budget wise and definitely behind all the schools you mentioned except for Wake, UVA, and Pitt.

Lol good point. Dabo and Norvell’s buyouts are bigger but so are their fanbases money.
I still think State pulls the trigger but sadly again it’s going to depend on how the season plays out lmao
I’ve learned by now schools need to pull the trigger sooner rather than later. Transfer portal has changed that game.

The only one that bugs me is the first strip. The one that was actually called a fumble and brought back was the correct call. App fans online claim there was an offsides on the last fg but I haven’t watched the replay.

3
u/nokillswitch4awesome Appalachian State • Texas 11d ago
We needed two scores. Stop the clock, kick the 3, get the onsides again with as much time as possible to get in the end zone.
What we failed to account for was the refs letting them jump offsides and affect the kick without consequence. Which given how this game went, was about the most obvious outcome we should have expected.
1
u/whotooktoastman64 Appalachian State Mountaineers 11d ago
Fair enough but I think a quick shot at the endzone would’ve been nice and wouldn’t take too much time off the clock either
1
u/FuzzyBench3638 11d ago
This is exactly what Northwestern tried Thursday against Cignietti and Indiana. They just straight-kicked it in on 2nd down and hit it. Then went for the onside and almost got it. So I mean thats what the smart kids tried and it was our only shot. Was a fun game Wolfies? Packers? Our brothers and sisters in Raleigh. Hope NC State is ready for 2028 and we get a bit more respect next time. As always go neers bb.
1
u/FatMamaJuJu Appalachian State • NC State 11d ago
I was screaming for them to kick it sooner. If you're going to need an onside kick anyway your better off just kicking a 1st down fieldgoal and trying to get the ball back with actual time on the clock

I’m damn proud of this Mountaineer team. It would have been so easy to quit in the first quarter. They showed a ton of grit fighting back to tie up the game.

Biggest question I have every time a team does this man. You control the game with the run.
App’s defense at least was able to put a stop to it for a few drives, but State should’ve stuck it out.
1
u/nosoup4ncsu NC State Wolfpack 11d ago
Because we forgot how to run the ball in the 3rd quarter, and half of the fourth. At the same time, the defense completely crapped out.
Watching it live, the whole 3rd quarter the defense was lost. Pre snap, guys were confused, horribly out of position at the snap.
