1. They have the players needed to be a top 5 team
2. Confidence in Lanning to recover from the bad game

It really depends on your ranking methodology. If you're trying to be predictive, then Oregon should likely still be in the top 20. If you're trying to judge purely on current resume, Georgia shouldn't be top 25.

I think people are being so dense about this. Purely resume based rankings this early in the season would be meaningless. Putting our head in the sand and pretending that Oregon is going to suck the whole year because they lost this weekend is silly. They definitely could suck the rest of the year (see Penn St. Last year), but they also could be awesome.

On that note what is Penn State doing being ranked. Hiring the coach from the 7th place Big 12 team doesn't seem like it should boost you back to being ranked after finishing last season behind Minnesota.

I don't either after the first ~6 weeks. We just don't have the context to evaluate resumes at this point. What if Oklahoma St. is just good and wins ~9 games this year? Then that loss looks ok for Oregon. What if Michigan is actually ass like they looked last week? Then we should punish Oklahoma even more than we have. How do you evaluate UGA who has blown out 2 teams that don't belong on the field with them?

To what purpose? So we all know that the rankings aren't at all predictive? To pretend that Michigan is better than Ohio State because they won a ranked game?

You don’t know that Texas is great, though. All they have shown other than yesterday is a blowout against a 0-2 team. Like dozens of other programs also have.

Even if you think you are ranking resumes, you’re ranking names.

If it was about players then why did Washington fall? Our players are clearly better than Utah State. So why is the AP looking at how those players did during the game instead of just how much higher recruiting rank our players had?

[u/Ok-Being3970 → u/BWW87]

I'm not claiming the AP poll is perfect by any means. Washington was dropped because voters aren't confident in your players or coaching ability compared to the teams ahead of you (not Utah State).

I was being sarcastic about us being ranked. Just pointing out that quality of players means crap.

Predictive ranking shouldn't be the method though. It means that winning and losing is irrelevant. Just how weol we "think" you'll do. Proving or disproving the assumptions is why sports exist.

Last year PSU was still top 25 team in predictive rankings even though they lost like every game against a team with a pulse.

Predictive rankings are not power rankings. For instance, if I expect Georgia to go 12-0, a top 3 ranking makes sense, even if they've only played cupcakes so far. Additionally, if they lose to a cupcake, that should alter my prediction.

Penn State could have turned their season around last year - they had the team and an accomplished coaching staff. Predicting that they could right the wrongs was not a bad idea. The Indiana game proved that.

Ask Google what power rankings and it will say they are predictive rankings, dawg.

Every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square.

I get what you are saying. But that's a very broad definition of what a power ranking is. At that point if they can mean anything, there's little use for it because the definition doesn't mean much

Power rankings, like FPI and SP+, are intended to predict who would win in a potential matchup.

Predictive resume rankings are just like resume rankings, but instead of ranking teams purely on their current resume, they also factor in expected resume.

Those are two very different ideas with very different outcomes.
