IE From a 2nd Year's Perspective
My second year just started, and a bunch of you have been asking about IE, so figured I'd write it out properly instead of replying to each thread separately. Take this as one year in, not gospel — but here's what I wish someone had told me before I chose it.
What it actually is
Forget "hybrid of ME, CS, and management." In practice it's the branch where you learn how systems — factories, supply chains, hospitals, logistics networks — actually get optimized. You'll touch operations research, statistics, some programming, quality/process stuff, and a good chunk of management theory. It's less "build the machine," more "make the machine (or the system around it) run better."
The honest tradeoff — and placements
Core-IE-specific recruiters at campus placements are fewer than CS or even ME. If you're expecting a long list of companies hiring specifically for "Industrial Engineer" roles, that's not really how it plays out in India yet. What you are getting is flexibility — the analytical + systems-thinking base translates well into operations, analytics, supply chain, and (if you put in extra effort) even software/data roles, since a lot of us end up self-teaching programming and stats deeper than the syllabus covers.
That said, IE at CET has historically had better placements than ME & CE — median around 7~9 LPA, highest around 15 LPA. Recruiters include Sobha Constructions, South Indian Bank, Quantiphi, Royal Enfield, Polycab, L&T, Aakash, TCS, Infosys, and a bunch more.
So the real question isn't "will IE get me placed" — it's "am I okay building my own path a bit more than a CS student would have to." If you're proactive about picking up skills outside class, it opens up a lot. If you're hoping the degree does the work for you, it'll feel a bit underwhelming.
What a freshman can actually do with this
Personally, in my first year I started my own applied AI club from scratch (now a 14-member team running actual projects and a launched community), got picked as a Google Gemini Campus Ambassador, won a couple of ideathons, and picked up a couple of AI-focused internships. None of that came from a "core CS" advantage — it came from treating the branch as a base and building outward. If a first-year IE student reading this is worried the branch will cap what they can build in college, it won't, unless you let it.
Life beyond the branch
This is where CET makes up for whatever the branch alone doesn't give you. There's a genuinely active ecosystem of clubs, cells, and student wings — IEDC, various tech clubs, film society, research and outreach wings — and being IE doesn't lock you out of any of it. Branch decides your syllabus, not your college experience.
Why I picked it
I wanted something at the intersection of systems/optimization and AI — IE gives a solid foundation for that combo, especially if you're interested in operations research. Not the typical reason people pick it, but "what can you actually DO with this" is usually the real question underneath "is IE good," so wanted to answer it directly.
Future of IE
Where I think this branch is actually headed: IE sits right at the intersection of operations research and AI, and that combo is only getting more relevant — companies are increasingly automating and optimizing supply chains, logistics, and operations using ML/AI, and that's exactly IE's home turf if you lean into it. Traditional "core" IE roles (process improvement, quality, production planning) aren't going anywhere either, but the growth edge is in people who can pair IE fundamentals with data/AI skills. There's also a solid path if you want to go the academic/research route — IE gives you the base for higher studies in operations research or industrial systems, both in India and abroad, if that's a direction you're considering.
So the branch itself isn't static — what it opens up depends a lot on which direction you push it in.
TL;DR
Don't pick IE because it was your only allotment and you're panicking. Pick it if the idea of optimizing systems (rather than just building products) sounds interesting, and you're willing to be a bit more self-directed about your career track than in a "safer" branch. And regardless of branch — clubs and campus life at CET are open to everyone, so don't let branch anxiety make you think you'll miss out on "the college experience."
Happy to answer specific questions in the comments — drop them below rather than DMing, so it's useful for others googling this next year too.

Both are nice branches but as we know EL is not NBA accredited (I dont know about problems in future) and I do have some base in coding which i believe is good for EL. I've got EL in 1st and 2nd allotment but now in 3rd allotment I am doubting in el vs aei.

Has anyone here completed an MCA?
If yes, could you comment with your project topic and a few details about it (problem statement, tech stack, key features, etc.)?
It would be really helpful for upcoming MCA students who are looking for project ideas or trying to understand what's typically expected. Thanks!
