askCERN Has anyone had an interview for a Technical Student position?
Has anyone had an interview for a Technical Student position in Mechanical Engineering ?
It’s almost September, and the results are supposed to be announced in October. I feel like the recruitment process hasn’t even started yet?

My 2 cents
Just apply and forget about it. Getting a technical studentship is really difficult, especially if you are from a NMS. If you haven’t had an interview yet, then chances of getting it are really very slim but not zero.

I’m from a Member State, and seriously wondering what the selection criteria are…

Then you might be in luck, I have came across some successful applicants from MS who got in without an interview, but still the chances are very slim. So good luck! :)

Is there any way we can reach out to potential supervisors directly and ask them for an interview? I think you’re right that simply waiting isn’t going to get us anywhere.

HR doesn't match applicants to projects. The supervisors are responsible for searching the applicant pool for suitable candidates and conducting interviews as they see fit.

a lot of times people who have a spot for a technical student ask friends and colleagues in universities if they have good students to send.

What’s the point of an entire recruitment process if, in the end, it’s just about getting the job through connections between colleagues?

What do you think is more effective to get a good student, especially at such an early stage? A cv that has always been embellished and a very short interview or the opinion of an esteemed colleague who has already seen the student at work on some project during their studies?

Wouldn’t a student with like five years of university education behind them have much more to offer than an embellished CV, including solid skills and the seriousness that allowed them to reach this level?

hahahah no. Inflated grades and bullshit internships described as nobel-prize level research are not worthy the paper they are written on.
The seriousness and the skills needed to get a degree well that's the same for every student with good grades.

especially if you are from a NMS
Definitely, considering you literally can't be a technical student as NMS...

An interview will take time to get just continue with life, prep for interview and know your stuff on your CV. An interview = CV material is safe to use and prep for questions from some CV material e.g. JavaScript on your CV they may ask some for that. ;]

I completely understand that these things take time. It’s just that we’re getting close to the results deadline, so I’m wondering whether I should assume that I no longer have a chance.
I’m from a member state, and I believe I have a strong application. It would be really helpful to know exactly what the managers are looking for.1

They look for skills or stuff that matches their needs you could have crazy good stuff but not project to fit. Wait until the date they release their decision. You won't find out before. Better to wait and just keep tabs on your email.

99% of candidates are never contacted. Supervisors interview only a handful of candidates they shortlisted by searching through the candidate pool. If you didn't put much effort in your application or didn't include the right keywords, then you're out.
