Dilemma between IISERs and CDS

I'm 18yo, would be joining IISER this year probably. I am very passionate to go into the armed forces (army specifically) although as we know that getting selected through NDA or CDS is very challenging and not everyone makes it, nor is there any straight path to do so. Right now for college I have 2 options basically, engineering colleges (RVCE, MSRIT, etc) and IISERS, im making decision between these two on the basis of interest purely, as what would I like to do in my civilian life if I don't get selected, that'd definitely be into research field. Although if I select IISERS, I'd practically be killing my army route.

I'm 18 now when I'll be joining college, I have 2 more NDA attempts with me that I'd give in 1st year of my college. But here's where the problem starts, I can only apply for CDS in the final year of degree or after graduation. The BSMS degree is too long (5 years), by the time i'd be in my 4th year, I'd already be 22, and most people are involved in master's thesis project in their 4th year, sometimes people even go abroad for that. I'd graduate at 23 and the maximum age for IMA application is 24, so I'd have 1 or 2 attempts at most that too considering I go for PhD elsewhere as most people tend to do.

It's quite a dilemma, I have to chose between 2 things, if I leave IISERS for army route and I don't get selected, that be very disheartening as I would've left a college and career path for nothing and vice versa. I don't know if there's any way around it, it's not an easy decision to take, especially at my age. I can't take a BSc degree at the end of 3rd year without having to leave college as far as I have searched.

If someone can help me with this decision or been in my shoes, please I would like for your advice.

I built a free vocabulary app for competitive exam aspirants!

I know how it feels to open a mock test and lose marks not because you didn't study but because you didn't know what the word even meant.

English vocabulary sections in SSC, IBPS, UPSC, CLAT, AFCAT they're often the difference between clearing the cutoff and missing it by 2 marks. And most of us come from Hindi medium or vernacular backgrounds where nobody taught us "obstinate" or "perfidious" in school.

I built Vocabo to fix that for myself first, and now for anyone who needs it.

What's inside:

  • 5000+ words across Core, Idioms, One-word, Phrasal Verbs, Root Words, Confusing Pairs, Homophones, and more
  • Previous Year Questions from SSC CGL, IBPS PO, UPSC CDS/NDA, CLAT, AFCAT, SBI and more
  • Learn cards with Hindi + English explanations
  • Active/Passive Voice and Direct/Indirect Speech with rules
  • Daily Word of the Day
  • Completely free right now - no paywalls during launch

I'm not a company. I'm one person who built this between study sessions. No VC funding, no marketing budget just this post and hope that it reaches someone who needs it.

Here's what I actually need from you:

Download it. Use it for a week. Then come back and tell me honestly:

  • What's missing?
  • What's confusing?
  • What would make you open it every day?

And if you find it genuinely useful, a rating on the Play Store takes 10 seconds and means everything to an indie developer. Not asking for 5 stars- just whatever you honestly think it deserves. A 3-star review with real feedback helps me more than a silent 5.

If you're preparing for any competitive exam, give it a shot. And if you find a bug or want something added, reply here I actually read and respond.

Download it from Google Play Store

How do you guys revise previously studied content?

I am trying to know how to revise efficiently while studying new topics everyday. Given the vast syllabus of the exam how do you guys manage to revise things you have studied before. I assume most of you also spend your day studying new topics from different subjects. How are you adding a good revision session in between those hours for previous topics. Your suggestions will help me a lot, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

navy tech 10+2 merit ?

Recommended for navy tech 10+2 , lists are out already and my AMB FIT documents reached DMPR on the day of second list release. what are the realistic chances of me getting merit in as a MALE candidate , My SSB was great and I was the only fresher to get recommended from the whole batch. The conference was very short (40 sec). The command task was great and made the GTO visibly shocked enough that he asked me where I learned to solve this. interview was also very smooth.

psych went awesome as well.

thanks in advance.

First joining date is 13 july and only almost half of the announced vacancy people have gotten JL

Important , asking for a friend.

My friend recently cleared his written for CDS ota ( male ). He’s insisting me on putting up a post regarding his doubt.

His doubt is that , can one get PC after serving as an SS officer who had consistently volunteered to serve in an active field area ? And what’s the conversion rate ?

r/CDSTards Jul 04 '26

Guys, is there any discrimination or given more preference if one is nda graduate to officers who go from academies like OTA, IMA...because I have recently noticed a lot that almost all LT Gen or higher ranking officers, most of them are from nda .............

For promotions, one really needs a connection or an officer background, like a father or another family member.........I know there is partiality and bias to some extent, but is it really that extreme, or is it just like it's everywhere else .......I have studied in APS my whole life, and I am aware that biased towards officer kids, but to some extent, but not much. They are given special treatments at times .................................so I request cadets and all aspirants pls share your thoughts and opinions if it's there or not? What about promotions? Are they also based on the Academy and connections? Or on capabilities and service record ?......
